Hi,

I have an issue regarding my WSUS updates. The windows WSUS client has
stopped downloading upates from the server (error log below). Im getting an
0x80072EE2 and 0x80072efe error. I've also tried to reslove the issue with no
luck. Here is what has been done:

1) Disabled the Firewall (windows and hardware)
2) Disabled Symantec Endpoint Protection (by right clicking on the icon in
the icon try and choosing disable), Removed Symantec Endpoint Protection
3) Played with the Automatic Update Service and the BITS service (restarted,
set to Automatic)
4) Did forced updates
5) Looked at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941/en-us
6) I can ping, tracert the WSUS server from my box, no proxy server installed
7) WSUS Server is controlled by the ISP and they tell me all is well.
8) Deleted the distribution folder

Updates use to work previousely, howeverly they just recently stop working.
Furthermore, the server has no problems updating for the MS Windows Update
site.

Server OS: Windows 2003 SP2 Web Edition

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards
dojob

The 0x80072EE2 error is a TImeout error.

The 0x80072EFE error is a Wsus update error Aborted error.

HUH? ? ? ? ?

"controlled by the ISP"???

> Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't see the 0x80072efe error in this log segment anywhere.

Timeouts are what they are and if you don't have control of both ends of the
network connection, it's going to be near impossible to diagnose.

The place to start, wsus update error, though, as always when something "quits working" is to
take an inventory of "What Has Changed?"

Hi,

Thanx for the reply. The Web Server is in the datacenter and this is causing
the fustration. The ISP rnq 10053 error providing WSUS as a service to all client. The
technicians insist that the WSUS is working perfectly and there is a problem
on my end. I just want to ensure that I've elimnated all possibilities on the
client side before I take them to the cleaners.

With regards to your question what was change ?

1) I installed a new anti-virus - symantec end point
2) I changed some of the rules on the hardware firewall.

I've reversed the above changes by:

1) Removing the anti-virus.
2) Disabling the firewall (for a short period of time and then forced and
update).

The errors are still appearing.

Please see below for the 0x80072efe error:

Yeah. this is the part I don't get. These two statements are incongrous.

"The Web Server is in the datacenter." (I assume this is the web server
running WSUS.)

and

"The ISP is providing WSUS as a service to all client."

What *exactly* do you mean by "ISP" in this context?

That's impossible for me to comment on without understanding the exact
network topology of this seemingly unorthodox environment.

Bingo!

Let's leave those uninstalled and disabled for the moment.

I'm still *very* confused, though.

WHAT did you install Symantec End Point onto?

WHAT hardware firewall did you modify?

WHERE is the WSUS Server in relation to all of the servers and devices
you've mentioned so far?

Well. here's a clue.

This is a log entry from your original post:

And this is a log entry from this post:

> 2009-06-08 14:13:55:390 812 b28 PT Initializing simple targeting cookie,
> clientId = 3eed87c2-b6ba-4c9e-b43b-df68a2796e5a,

They're different computers. (They have DNS misconfigured, as evidenced by
the log entry containing only a machine name, not a fully qualified domain
name -- which is what it should have).

But, most significantly, they have IDENTICAL SusClientID values.

Your client systems have duplicate SusClientIDs.

And that's capable of causing timeouts and aborts -- among a host of other
issues!

Lemme Clarify.

1) The Web Server refers to assassin upcoming terror box in the Data Center and not the WSUS server.
2) The ISP - refers to the the guys providing the connectivity in the
datacenter. Within the datacenter they have designated a box that is
providing WSUS updates to Web servers. I have no control autorun.dll error 0x7f any OTHER
server (including the WSUS), so any changes or installations would only be to
my Web Server.
3) In terms of setup: My Web Server -> Firewall ->Gateway->Internet
My Web Server -> Firewall -> Wsus Server.
-----
4) The web server has been assigned three ip's remainder assigned as
follows: Two to the firewall, 1 Gateway, 1 Broadcast
5) There is no firwall installed on the PC (service stopped)
6) There is a web interace that allows me to manage firwall rules.
7) I recently upgraded the Anti-virus from F-Prot to Symantec on the Web
Server.
8) I also locked down all IN and OUT traffic on all 3 IP's (only allowing
specific protocols both ways http, https, wsus update error, an exception runtime error has occurred, smtp), however I specifically
allowed all traffic between the WSUS server IP and my Web Server. I can ping,
tracert, telnet to the WSUS server with the firwall ON.

Hope this clears things up.

The webserver is setup in a workgroupo. They don't have a domain.

I deleted the SID's and reauthorised WSUS.

Really irrelevant -- a WEB SERVER should have a known FULLY QUALIFIED
hostname.

The point has absolutely nothing to do with whether the web server(s) are in
workgroups or Active Directory.

With regard to the 0x80004004 error code -- this KB article documents an ASP
(server-side) issue that occurs in Microsoft Project Server, wsus update error. It's certainly
possible the same error can be encountered in a WSUS environment.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323019

Error 0x8024b304 in Windows Update, and when adding Optional Wsus update error 0x8024b304 is being displayed by Windows Update, and attempting to install Optional Features via the Settings applet also fails with 0x8024b304.

I am using Windows Server Update Services on my local network wsus update error many other machines on the network correctly download updates from WSUS. I've recently completely re-installed Windows Server Update Services on the server, which had no effect on the error - it still shows up in exactly the same way.

This is what I see from Windows Update:

enter image description here

Yes, I have a properly configured Group Policy controlling the Windows Update parameters network-wide.

This is what is seen from the Optional Features page:

enter image description here

I used PowerShell to obtain the Windows Update logs via Get-WindowsUpdateLog, and the pertinent couple of lines from the generated log file are:

WS error: There was an error communicating with the endpoint at 'https://xxx.xxx.xxx:8531/ClientWebService/client.asmx'.
FAILED [8024B304] Web service call

I can browse the URL from Edge without wsus update error src="https://i.stack.imgur.com/Z8OnD.png" alt="enter image description here">

Being able to browse the WebService with Edge, without seeing any error reported, makes me wonder what the "error communication with endpoint" message above is actually indicating. Intel cpu ucode loqding error course, 0x8024b304 is not documented anywhere I can find, so that by itself is unhelpful. I've even used Microsoft's error utility which typically shows at least a semblance of an error message, but it simply shows this:

A couple of notes:

  1. I've restarted my computer three times.
  2. I have reinstalled Windows, albeit with the option to keep my files and settings. That didn't work.
  3. If I rename mysql error logs key, and restart the Update Orchestrator and Windows Update services, I can download updates, wsus update error. The settings present in that key are the same across the network due to Group Policy, however for sake of completeness here's canon mp190 e3 error screenshot of that:

enter image description here

enter image description here

Details about the machine: Windows 10 Pro Windows version is: 21H1 OS Build is 19043.1526 Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4170.0 is installed.
