Description

HostedNetworkStarter is a simple tool for Windows 7 and later that allows you to easily create a wifi hotspot with your wireless network adapter, using the Wifi hosted network feature of Windows operating system. With the wifi hotspot created by this tool, you can allow any device with wifi support to access the network and the Internet connection available in your computer.

System Requirements

  • Any version of Windows, starting from Windows 7 and up to Windows 10, 32-bit or 64-bit systems. (In older versions of Windows, there is no support for Wifi hosted network)
  • Wireless network adapter that supports Wifi hosted network.

Known Issues

  • hnetcfg.dll Crash - On some Windows 10 systems, HostedNetworkStarter crashes when trying to start the hosted network. The crash occurs inside hnetcfg.dll while HostedNetworkStarter requests to disable previous ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) settings in order to set ICS for the hosted network. It's unclear whether this crash occurs because HostedNetworkStarter does something wrong or it's some kind of bug in ICS component of Windows 10. Some people reported that this crash started to appear after installing Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

Versions History

  • Version 1.15:
    • You can use any variable inside HostedNetworkStarter.cfg as a command-line parameter in order to change the settings of HostedNetworkStarter, for example:
      HostedNetworkStarter.exe /NetworkSSID "MyNetwork" /NetworkKey "fh78fh8f#"
  • Version 1.10:
    • Added 'Put Icon On Tray' option.
    • Added 'Save Configuration To File' and 'Load Configuration From File' options.
    • Added /Start command-line option to start the hosted network instantly without displaying the settings window.
    • Added /cfg command-line option to start HostedNetworkStarter with the specified configuration file.
  • Version 1.02:
    • HostedNetworkStarter now displays an error message when typing a network key shorter than 8 characters (The hosted network feature of Windows fails to start if the network key is too short)
  • Version 1.01:
    • Fixed issue: When Windows hosted network is disabled, HostedNetworkStarter now automatically enable it. In previous version, HostedNetworkStarter failed to start the wifi hotspot if Windows hosted network was disabled.
  • Version 1.00 - First release.

Start Using HostedNetworkStarter

HostedNetworkStarter doesn't require any installation process or additional DLL files. In order to start using it, simply run the executable file - HostedNetworkStarter.exe
After running HostedNetworkStarter, the 'Hosted Network Options' window is opened, allowing you to choose the desired configuration of your Wifi hotspot. After filling the network name ,the network key, and choosing the desired Internet connection to share, you should press the Start button to start the Wifi Hotspot.
After starting the wifi hotspot, the main window of HostedNetworkStarter displays information about the started hotspot. The upper pane displays general statistics about the active hotspot (Hosted Network State, Channel Number, number of Connected clients, Sent Bytes, Received Bytes, and so on) , and the lower pane displays the list of clients that are currently connected to your hotspot
If there was any error during the hotspot activation, the error code or message will be displayed in one or more of the following lines in the upper pane: 'Hosted Network Error', 'Hosted Network Reason Code', and 'Internet Connection Sharing Error'.

The 'Hosted Network Options' window

Here's the description of all options available in the 'Hosted Network Options' window:
  • Network Name (SSID):The name of your Wifi hotspot.
  • Network Key:The network key of your Wifi hotspot.
  • Persistent Key:If this option is checked, Windows operating system will store your network key, and it'll use it in the future if the 'Network Key' field is empty.
  • Storing the network key inside the .cfg file: Tells HostedNetworkStarter how to store the network key inside HostedNetworkStarter.cfg (located in the same folder of the .exe file):
    • Don't store the network key inside the .cfg file (The default)
    • Store the network key inside the .cfg file without encryption
    • Store the network key inside the .cfg file with Windows encryption

If you choose to store the network key with Windows encryption, HostedNetworkStarter will be able to get load the key only when running it on the same computer with the same user.

  • Share the Internet and the network from the following connection: If this option is checked, the devices that connect to your hotspot will be able to use the Internet from the selected network connection as well as to access other computers and devices on your network. HostedNetworkStarter automatically activates the Internet connection sharing when you start the wifi hotspot and deactivates it when you stop wifi hotspot.
If this option is turned off, you can still manually activate the Internet connection sharing from the settings window of your network adapter.
If this option is turned off and you don't activate the Internet connection sharing manually, then the devices connect to your hotspot will only be able to access the computer that runs HostedNetworkStarter and any other device that is connected to the wifi hotspot.
  • Maximum number of connected devices: The maximum number of wifi devices that will be able to connect your wifi hotspot concurrently.

Command-Line Options

/cfg <Filename> Start HostedNetworkStarter with the specified configuration file. For example:
HostedNetworkStarter.exe /cfg "c:\config\hns.cfg"
/Start Starts the hosted network instantly without displaying the settings window.
/NetworkSSID <Network SSID>
/NetworkKey <Network Key>
/ShareInternet <0

Try to Fix the Hosted Network Couldn’t Be Started Error [MiniTool Tips]

When you set up a Wi-Fi hotspot via Command Prompt, “the hosted network couldn’t be started” may occur in your Windows 10 computer. How can you fix this error? Now, this post from MiniTool introduces some possible solutions to you and you can try them to easily get rid of the trouble.

Microsoft Hosted Network Could Not Be Started Connectify

Hosted Network is a feature that was first introduced in Windows 7 and it is also supported in Windows 8/10 with the Wireless LAN Service installed. This feature is used by Connectify Hotspot to create its wireless access points.

That is, it allows you to share the Wi-Fi connection of your laptop or desktop with phones and tablets. Your computer has turned into a wireless hotspot.

However, when you set up a Wi-Fi hotspot in Windows 10/8/7 via Command Prompt, you get the following error message:

“The hosted network couldn’t be started.

The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.”

Or “The hosted network couldn’t be started. A device attached to the system is not functioning”.

The error indicates the hosted network isn’t working and it is usually a Wi-Fi driver or network adapter configuration issue. But don’t worry and here is how to fix the hosted network couldn’t be started error in Windows 10/8/7.

Fixes for the Hosted Network Couldn’t Be Started Windows 10/8/7

Run the Network Adapter Troubleshooter

The Network Adapter Troubleshooter may help you to fix the netsh wlan start hostednetwork not working issue. You can also have a try.

Step 1: In Windows 10, input troubleshoot to the search bar and click the result to open the setting.

Step 2: Locate Network Adapter and choose Run the troubleshooter.

Run the Network Adapter Troubleshooter

Step 3: Select the network adapter that you need to diagnose. If you don’t know which one to choose, select All network adapters. And click Next to start detecting and fixing found issues.

Check the Sharing Settings

When hosted network can’t start, the required sharing settings may not be chosen in Windows 10/8/7. So, here you should have a check as instructed.

Step 1: Launch the Run window by pressing Win and R keys.

Step 2: Type ncpa.cpl to the text box and click OK.

Step 3: After opening the Internet Connections window, right-click your connection and choose Properties.

Step 4: Under the Sharing tab, make sure the box of Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection< is checked.

Tip: If you are using Windows 8, you should also check the Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet option.

If this can’t fix the hosted network couldn’t be started error, try another way.

Check the Power Management Settings of Network Adapter

In addition, you should also check your wireless network adapter to see if the required option is selected in case of netsh wlan start hostednetwork not working. Follow these steps now:

Step 1: Go to Device Manager and expand Network adapters.

Step 2: Right-click your network adapter to choose Properties.

Step 3: Go to the Power Management tab and check the box of Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Step 4: Click OK to save the change.

Enable Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter

In Windows, there is a Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter that may not be found in Device Manager. You need to enable it by following these steps:

Step 1: In Device Manager, click View and choose Show hidden devices.

Step 2: Right-click Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter after expanding Network adapters and choose Enable device

Set up your Wi-Fi hotspot to see if the hosted network couldn’t be started error disappears.

Update Your Wi-Fi Driver

It is useful to fix your issue via driver update and here is what you should do:

Step 1: Right-click your wireless network adapter and choose Update driver in Device Manager.

Step 2: Click Search automatically for updated driver software.

Step 3: Windows will detect and install the updated driver for your PC.

Alternatively, you can go to the website of your supplier, download and install the latest wireless network adapter on your PC.

Final Words

Are you bothered by “the hosted network couldn’t be started” in Windows 10/8/7? Now, try these solutions to easily fix your issue and then you can set up the Wi-Fi hotspot successfully.

Microsoft Hosted network is not available (CF00100E)

  • I get an error, "Microsoft Hosted network is not available" when I try to connect wifi for my HTC desire V through the laptop.

I use dell xps 15 laptop in which I use Wired internet.
I want to use my computer laptop wi - fi as a hotspot to use internet on my HTC Desire V for this I'm using connectify software but when I start HotSpot Wi - FI Access Point Encrypted (WPA2) method of sharing is for me the hosted Microsoft network is not available.

Original title: Microsoft Hosted network is not available

I had the same problem and that's what I did on my PC Win7:

(Forgive me if my English is not good)

    1. verification of my network hosted in my driver. I have run the administrator command prompt and type netsh wlan start hostednetwork

    If you get this message:

The hosted network could not be started. The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.

Then you have the same problem with me. It is the next step.

    2. check my driver. Type of command line: netsh wlan show pilot

Then I saw that my support pilot hosted network. If your driver does not support hosted network, I suggest update you your driver or reinstall it.

How FND out your driver and update: Start - Control Panel - system and safety - device (under System) Manager - ECS

    3. If your drivers support hosted network but still will not start, then the problem could be that you do not have Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter (the same problem happened to me). You can search and download. I tried and installed the new card.

Now I have Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter undernetwork cards, in Device Manager.

    4. I tried step 1 and it worked! So I can run my Connectify and this error message never showed even once.

I hope this works for you also.

    Good luck

  • T450s: Hosted network feature not supported?

I have a ThinkPad T450s bought in Dec 2015 with Windows 10 Pro. It has the Intel AC 7265 wireless card. I am trying to use the hosted network feature Windows to use the laptop as a hotspot for other devices, but I can't make it work.

When I open an administrator command prompt and run "netsh wlan show drivers", the parameter ' hosted network supported:' has the value 'no '.

I tried updating the wireless network card driver via the tool companion of Lenovo, via the Intel driver update utility and Windows via the Device Manager. The wireless driver has been updated to version 18.330.1 dated dated 05-01-2016. Then, I rebooted the machine but still no improvement. The characteristic hosted network shows as not supported. I also tried showing the devices hidden in Device Manager but under network adapters, there is no virtual card listed Microsoft hosted network.

Is this a driver problem? Anyone with a broadcast network animated T450s as being taken in charge?

    Thank you

Well, I found a solution on the Intel community forum: https://communities.intel.com/message/327193. A couple of users in this thread (the one with a Lenovo X 1 carbon) suggested to use an older version of 18.11 18.12 driver. So that's what I did and it worked! Here are my actual steps:

  • Example: Pavilion ac123tx: hosted network does not start

in my computer hp laptop ac123tx (preloaded with win 10 OS) not able to start the wifi hotspot because it lacks the virtual network adapter hosted Microsoft. I tried to start the hosted network from cmd prompt, but every time it gives message hosted network could not be started. The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation. what need have the solution to this?

  • "The hosted network could not be started."

I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S2 and when trying to connect to my Wifi network, I found that the signal from the router was not strong enough to reach the floor, and since I have a laptop connected with a cable that I thought I could make it work like a virtual router. After some research, I found several programs:

I tried Connectify, which did not work. Then I tried Virtual Router, that does not work either. Then, I found this:

    http://www.techylabs.com/setting-up-a-virtual-router-in-Windows-7.html

And it worked, the network appeared in the list on my phone. Unfortunately, when you try to connect, it got stuck on ' Optaining IP-address '.

I tried to use a static IP address, and even with one put in place, it got stuck on ' Optaining IP-address '.

After that, I have been clicking through the menus a lot and hit accidentally turn off somewhere. Since then, when I try to start the virtual router, it says:

The hosted network could not be started.

The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.

I can't find the place where I hit the turn off, and I don't know what to do more :(

  • Bluetooth network is not available

Been trying for a while to use AirDrop on my MacBook Pro (Version OS X El Capitan 10.11.6) and my iPhone 6 s more.

Just realized today that it might not work because the Bluetooth on the Pro does not work. With each device I try a pairing, it says that the network is not available and that I need to make sure that network access is enabled. Trying to do this, system preferences > network > Bluetooth PAN, I get the same message. I need you to ensure that network access is enabled.

Someone else had this problem? Any ideas on how to solve it?

Open system preferences > Bluetooth. Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled.

    Hi Haran,

Generally, this problem is due to Server related questions or changes due to the new computer. Before you start with the troubleshooting steps, I would like to know some information about the same thing.

    1. have you made changes on the computer before this problem?

    2. you are connected to the Microsoft Account or Local account?

    3. are you able to connect to the Windows site using the same Microsoft Account?

    4. are you this question while trying to download or trying to install applications?

Initially, I you suggest to try to restart the computer and then try to download or install the application on Windows Store and check.

I would suggest trying the following methods and check if it works for you.

    Method 1:

Try the steps in the following Microsoft Help article and check if it helps.

Why can't I connect to the Windows store?

Acrobat Reader DC will not install. It goes about 85% and stops with a message that the file I am trying to achieve is on a network and not available.  Totally frustrated that many files need this program to open.

I got this program for years.  Update Windows 10 and after nothing more than headaches with he returned to Windows 7 and it is then Acrobat has stopped working.

    Hi lindat7439924,

There is no uninstall for Mac Reader program. You can directly delete the application from the Applications folder, which is just trash/Applications/Adobe Reader.app.

Then you can download Adobe reader from here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

    Kind regards

  • Microsoft hosted network

I create a network hosted by using the command line. I was wondering if there is no way to block a MAC address by using the command line. The most I can do is run the netsh wlan show hostednetwork command to see what mac address is located on the network, but I can't block everything. Is there a way to do this?

This is my first time posting and I do not see a category to put this so I'll just put it in a category at random.

Wireless network card recognized and installed correctly?
What is the status in Device Manager?

If everything is OK here I assume card WLAN is not properly enabled. At the first WLAN switch on ON position and then use combination FN + F8 to activate the wireless network card.

When I try to connect 2 a network... no networks are available?
Any1 no what I have to do?

Wireless network card is installed correctly?
    Wireless network card is enabled?
Check it with FN + F8.
Is WLAN led on when you scan area available networks?

Maybe you didn t turn on the wireless network card.

  • I wanted to configure my laptop (windows7) in such a way that I can connect many android mobile phones I have to wifi network via my laptop's wifi connection.

So I came across some softwares like Virtual router plus, connectify .All of them have given me errors.
    Screenshots for Connectify starting errors

The mentioned update could not be started.

In Virtual router plus also same problems
    [3]
    [4]

So googling and searching I came across this thread
    https://superuser.com/questions/743913/virtual-router-plus-could-not-be-started
the answer given on this thread I want to try.But these commands are for wifi which is onboard i.e. integrated with motherboard of your laptop.

    netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=yournetworkname key=secret

    netsh wlan start hostednetwork

    netsh wlan stop hostednetwork

.There is a SSID to which I am already connected let us say network1 then new ssid which I want to create ssid2 to which I want my android mobile phones to connect to ssid2 via my laptop in above commands what does hostednetwork refer to?
I want my android mobile phones to connect to internet using my laptop as a virtual router.
I have multiple USB wifi devices I want to use them to solve my problem.

I read this page https://www.techperiod.com/enable-microsoft-virtual-wifi-miniport-adapter/and it mentions that to be able to create a virtual router Wifi will be able to create a virtual network or router only if the device has capacity
which can be checked by command
if the output has a line
then only you can create a virtual router.
My onboard wifi does not have capability
    [5]
in above screenshot hostednetwork=no output is there for command so that means my onboard wifi chipset can not create a virtual router.
I have a USB wifi device which has this capability
    [6]
Now I want to use the USB wifi adapter to create a hotspot or virtual router.
So how do I use above netsh commands to work on Wi-Fi2 adapter?
My problem is all the tutorials and docs I read have mentioned netsh command assuming the user wants to create hotspot or virtual router on Wifi1 which is onboard chipset of laptop. I want to do it on USB wifi.So I am not able to understand how to proceed?

I switched off the onboard Wifi via power button and then tried commands
    C:\Windows\system32>netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=myandroid key=121212

    The hosted network started.
    C:\Windows\system32>netsh wlan start hostednetwork
    The hosted network started.

But it started on interface wifi which does not have the capability to run virtualrouter
I could confirm this because the power on my onboard wifi indicator came and android could not connect to the hotspot. It showed me a hotspot with the name I made on command line but could not connect.
    [7]

    Following screen shot

on my android phone shows that android could see the newly created ssid myandroid (which due to commands happened on WiFi which does not have capability to host network) but later android could not get IP from virtual router which was created on command line .I am not clear as how to use command to create virtual router for USB wifi (which is wifi2) or have I missed something?

Microsoft Hosted Network is a Windows feature used by Connectify to create access point mode Hotspots. This function is highly dependent on Windows being up-to-date, but also on your wireless drivers. Here are some things you can try to get a functional Connectify Hotspot:

Fix the Issue by Updating Your Wireless Drivers

Unfortunately, Windows does a poor job of keeping drivers up to date, so often times you have to manually update your drivers or use a tool that will help do it for you. However, we strongly recommend looking for drivers by visiting the wireless device or computer manufacturer's website - learn here how to update your wireless (WiFi) drivers: https://support.connectify.me/article/354-how-to-update-your-wireless-wifi-driver.

Start the Hosted Network Service Manually

You can also try manually starting the service yourself. Open a Windows Command Prompt as Admin (in the Start Screen / Menu search for ‘CMD’ -> right-click on the icon that pops up -> select ‘Run as administrator’) and enter the following:

    netsh wlan start hostednetwork

The command prompt should then show "The hosted network started". After that, try starting Connectify Hotspot and see if that helped.

Use Wi-Fi Direct If Hosted Network is Not Supported

If you don't get the confirmation message above ('The hosted network started.') or get a message saying that hosted network is not supported, then you have to use the Wi-Fi Direct service instead.

Go to the Connectify Hotspot user interface - Settings - Advanced and select the 'Prefer Wi-Fi Direct' checkbox. Restart your hotspot afterward. Connectify Hotspot should be working.

    Translating HostedNetworkStarter to other languages

In order to translate HostedNetworkStarter to other language, follow the instructions below:
    1. Run HostedNetworkStarter with /savelangfile parameter:
      HostedNetworkStarter.exe /savelangfile
A file named HostedNetworkStarter_lng.ini will be created in the folder of HostedNetworkStarter utility.
    2. Open the created language file in Notepad or in any other text editor.
    3. Translate all string entries to the desired language. Optionally, you can also add your name and/or a link to your Web site. (TranslatorName and TranslatorURL values) If you add this information, it'll be used in the 'About' window.
    4. After you finish the translation, Run HostedNetworkStarter, and all translated strings will be loaded from the language file.
If you want to run HostedNetworkStarter without the translation, simply rename the language file, or move it to another folder.

I have run the administrator command prompt windows hosted network reported an error connectify type netsh wlan start hostednetwork

    Good luck

  • "The hosted network could not be started."

I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S2 and when trying to connect to my Wifi network, I found that the signal from the router was not strong enough to reach the floor, and since I have a laptop connected with a cable that I thought I could make it work like a virtual router. After some research, I found several programs:

I tried Connectify, which did not work. Then I tried Virtual Router, that does not work either, windows hosted network reported an error connectify.

Since then, windows hosted network reported an error connectify, when I try to start the virtual router, it says:

The hosted network could not be started.

The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.

I can't find the place where I hit the turn off, and I don't know what to do more :(
