The error "Hardware lock not found. Application will terminate" will occur when starting 3D Studio MAX if the hardware lock cannot be detected. In some circumstances, no error appears, but the program will fail. These failures are usually caused by setup or configuration problems with the hardware lock for 3DS MAX. This document describes how to determine the cause of these problems, and how to solve them.

Preliminary Troubleshooting Strategies:

To diagnose problems with 3D Studio MAX and the Sentinel Pro hardware lock, perform these steps:

Note: Most changes made to the system will require you to log into the system so you have Administrator rights. After making changes to the system, you may have to reboot in order for the changes to take affect.

1. If you have other programs that use hardware locks, check to see if they run on the computer. If the program runs, then the port address is probably correct, and the port is probably receiving an adequate amount of electricity. If this is the case, skip to #3.

2. Check the port address and test the power. The parallel port address should be one of the three standard IBM LPT port addresses: 0x, 0x, or 0x3BC. Notice how the DMA is set. To check the port and DMA settings, use found in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory.

3. Change the parallel port type setting within the Sentinel Driver from Autodetect to IBM-AT. This suggestion has proven successful for a number of different computers, but you should try each port mode to see which works for you.

If you are running Windows NT

Perform these steps:

If you are using Windows 95 or Windows

A driver is usually not necessary when running under Windows 95/98, therefore, the driver is not installed during 3DS MAX installation. If you need to load the driver for Windows 95/98, you must run the Sentinel installation program found in the download section of the Rainbow Technologies web site. The file may also reside in the Sentinel folder of more recent versions of the 3DS MAX CD.

Note: Some parallel port devices, like certain printers, have drivers which prevent the hardware lock from being detected. You will have to install the Sentinel driver using the program.

1. Choose Start, Settings, and select Control Panel. Select Multimedia, then choose the Devices tab.

2. Open "Other Multimedia Devices". Double-click the "Sentinel for i Systems" entry.

3. Choose Settings to open the Sentinel Driver configuration window.

4. Choose Edit to open the Configure Port window.

5, system error failed of lock. Change the Port Type from Autodetect to IBM-AT.

6. Restart Windows NT when you are prompted to do so when exiting.

Checking the Version of the Sentinel Driver:

It is important to verify the version of the Sentinel driver. Later versions of 3DS MAX require that you have the newest version of the Sentinel driver loaded. The correct driver version should be or greater. If you have an older version, remove the existing driver and install a newer version from the Sentinel directory on the 3DS MAX CD. The very latest driver can be downloaded from the Rainbow Technologies web site at This is system error failed of lock self-extracting archive file that should be extracted to a directory on your system. Refer to the technical document, Removing and Installing Hardware Lock Drivers, for instructions about installing and removing hardware lock drivers.

Checking the Sentinel driver version using Windows NT

Perform these steps:

Checking the Sentinel driver version using Windows 95/

Perform these steps:

1. Choose Start/Settings, and open the Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Multimedia icon, then select Devices.

3. Open 'Other Multimedia Devices', then double-click the entry for "Sentinel for i Systems".

4. Choose Settings, then the About button to display a window containing the driver version information.

1. Start the utility.

2. From the dropmenu at the upper left, bind servfail error Function > Configure

3. In the Configure Sentinel Driver dialog box pick the About button to see the driver information window.

Verify Communications with the Lock:

Verify that communication occurs with the hardware lock. This is best done by using a utility named Sentinel Medic that will determine the presence of any Rainbow Technologies hardware locks that are attached to the parallel port richedit line insertion error avz the computer. It can be downloaded from the Utilities section of the Rainbow Technologies web site at

Some computers use a hard disk controller card that also controls the communications and parallel ports on the computer. Some of these multi-function cards do not generate enough power to send a signal to the hardware lock. An easy remedy for this problem is to plug the hardware lock into the port, then plug a printer into the other end of the hardware lock. When the printer is turned on, power will flow between the printer and the computer. The 3D Studio MAX initialization signal can now "piggyback" on the printer's power signal. If acceptable, either leave the printer in this configuration or install a parallel card that supplies more power. This is a common problem with laptop computers.

Confirming the Correct Lock:

3D Studio MAX comes in two versions. You can purchase a Commercial or Educational version of the product. Each version has it's own specific lock. A Commercial version of 3DS MAX will not run if you have an Educational hardware lock. Figure 1 shows the difference between the two hardware locks.

Figure 1 - The Commercial version lock is blue (L) while the Educational version lock is red (R), system error failed of lock. The locks measure approximately " x " (or x cm).

Note: Each lock has a fifteen digit part number. If the lock's part number ends with (Commercial) or (Educational) you should contact discreet at or for a replacement lock. Locks with these number have system error failed of lock reported to fail without t42p fan error you do not have the correct lock for your version of 3D Studio MAX, contact your Authorized discreet Reseller for a replacement. You will need to provide your product serial number when requesting a replacement lock.

Hardware Lock not found error:

Aside from a wrong lock or known defective lock, as described above, there are other factors that can cause a hardware lock error. Figure 2 shows the error message you will see when a hardware lock related issue arises. This section discusses the other situations that can system error failed of lock in the following error dialog.

Figure 2 - This message is a clear indication that you are encountering a hardware lock problem.

'Missing Lock'

Verify that the hardware lock is actually plugged into the system parallel port, system error failed of lock. Locks are small and easily swapped to other systems. If machines have recently been moved or replaced, make sure the lock is not still attached to the old CPU. You should also make sure that the lock is attached to the port properly. If the lock is not screwed in all the way, system error failed of lock, 3D Studio MAX may not recognize the presence of the lock.

The position of the hardware lock can also be a factor in making 3D Studio MAX operate. If you have a chain of locks for different products on the system, try plugging the 3DS MAX lock directly to the parallel port by itself and launch 3DS MAX. If the program runs, add the other locks to the back of the 3DS MAX lock, and launch each program to make sure they all operate correctly.

Note: Make sure you turn off your system whenever plugging or unplugging your hardware lock(s). Plugging or unplugging a lock from an operating system can cause a power surge that can damage the lock.

'Wrong Lock Order' (3D Studio MAX only)

The Hardware Lock Not Found error can also occur if you have upgraded your copy of 3D Studio MAX and plugged the 'Upgrade' hardware lock in without keeping the original 3DS MAX 1.x lock on the system. The 'Upgrade' lock must be used in conjunction with the original MAX 1.x hardware lock. The original lock should be plugged in first with the 'Upgrade' lock following it.

"Wrong Upgrade Version" (3D Studio MAX only)

This error could also be the result of installing the wrong upgrade version of 3D Studio MAX. A common scenario is one where you have the educational version of 3DS MAX 1.x installed and running without any error ribbon out zebra. After installing the upgrade of 3DS MAX 2.x, you find that the error message is displayed whenever you try to launch the newer version. However, MAX 1.x runs fine, if it's still on the system. If you were mistakenly sent the Commercial upgrade copy of 3DS MAX 2.x, the new blue, 'upgrade' lock will not be compatible with 0x00000be error windows 7 original red, educational lock. The Commercial version of MAX requires a blue hardware lock.

Check the MAX CD. On the left side, you should see the educational logo (a lightbulb with a cursor clicking on it). You should also see text that reads, "Education Version". If the left side is blank, you have a Commercial version of the software and it needs to be replaced with the Educational version. Contact the dealership or source where you ordered your upgrade.

Similarly, the error can be caused if you upgrade to 3D Studio MAX 2.x from 3D Studio VIZ 1.x or from the original DOS version of 3D Studio. The best way to verify that you have the correct 'upgrade' lock is by making sure the locks are the same color. If the locks are incorrectly matched, contact the dealership or site where you purchased your upgrade and ask then to got you a replacement.

Note: Upgrades to 3D Studio MAX and 3.x do not require you to keep the old hardware lock on the system. Once newer versions of 3DS MAX are configured and operational, you can remove the old lock from the parallel port.

'Inactive Sentinel Driver'

An inactive Sentinel driver can also be a reason for the 'Hardware Lock not found error'. This can occur if you have recently loaded 3D Studio MAX and have forgotten to restart the system, system error failed of lock. To verify that the driver is running, follow the steps shown in the section, Other Device or Service related errors.

"Damaged Lock"

If your system has recently been subjected to power surges or other electrical problems, the lock may be damaged. Other mistreatment, such as removing the lock while the system is running or plugging the lock into another parallel device instead of directly into the parallel port, can also damage the lock. A damaged lock cannot be repaired. It must be replaced. To verify whether the lock is damaged, swap it with a lock from another system if one is available. If none are available then take your lock to the local dealership where you purchased 3DS MAX and ask them to plug it into one of their systems. If it still fails, they can help you error line 692 unity3d beast lightmap a new one.

If the dealer where you purchased 3DS MAX is not local, you can also check the lock using the Sentinel Medic utility described earlier in the section, Verify Communications with the Lock.

Other Device or Service related errors:

If you receive device or service error when booting your system, they may have an effect on the Sentinel driver. There are three situations that usually affect the hardware lock driver and may cause it to fail:

1. A device is not recognized by the system during boot up.

2. A service failed to start during boot up.

3. A CMOS/BIOS setting is keeping a device/service from starting.

Note: The Event Viewer can also give you an idea of devices or services that fail to start during the system boot.

"The system failed to find the device specified."

Advanced chipsets will yield the error: "The system failed to find the device specified" when starting NT. This is because the I/O address is dynamically allocated. This problem is normally caused by using older Rainbow drivers and can be resolved by installing the latest hp5100 error 52.0, which have advanced chipset detection.

ParPort service failure

The ParPort service allows the parallel port to operate. If the port is disabled in the system CMOS, the Sentinel driver will fail. Restart the system and enter the CMOS to verify that the parallel port is enabled. At this time, make sure it is set to one of the modes specified earlier in this document. Once the port is enabled, continue booting. If no service failure messages appear try launching 3DS MAX. The Sentinel driver should automatically be started during the boot up sequence.

"One or more services failed to start."

In some cases, the error message "One or more services failed to start" will occur during the boot-up phase of NT. If 3D Studio MAX fails to start, it is likely that NT does not recognize the Sentinel driver or the ParPort service failed to start. Verify if the Sentinel driver was the service that failed by using the following steps.

If you are using Windows

1. Right click on the My Computer icon and choose properties.

2. Select the Hardware Tab then click on the Device Manager button.

3. From the Device Manager applet, choose View / Show Hidden Devices.

4. Expand the Non-Plug and Play Drivers folder and locate the Sentinel drivers.

5. Double click on the Sentinel driver and then on the Driver tab.

6. Verify that the driver is Started.

If you are using Windows NT

1. Choose the Start>Settings menu, and open the Control Panel. Select the Devices icon.

2. Scroll down the list of devices and highlight the Sentinel listing. The Status should be set to "Started", and its Startup setting should be "Automatic".

a. If there is no Sentinel listing, it means that the driver has not been installed.

b. If the Status is not "Started", click the Start button. If the device fails to start, this would indicate that the ParPort device probably failed to start during system boot.

c. Scroll up the list of devices and highlight ParPort. If the Status is not set to "Started", click the Start button to start the ParPort.

d. If the ParPort fails to start, you will have to boot into the CMOS to make sure the system setting for the parallel port is enabled. Then the ParPort device will start.

3. Once the Parport device is started, scroll back to the Sentinel listing and make sure it is 'Started'.

4. Close the Control Panel and try starting 3DS MAX.

If you are using Windows NT (3D Studio MAX 1.x only)

1. In the Main Window, double-click Control Panel, then select Drivers.

2. Highlight "Sentinel for i Systems" or "Sentinel for Intel systems".

3, system error failed of lock. Choose Setup, then Edit.

4. If the computer reports "Sentinel Driver not installed", the driver is not being recognized. Check the NT Event Log for references to the Sentinel driver in order to determine if the problem is isolated to the hardware lock drivers.

BIOS Considerations:

Check the parallel port communication mode in the computer's BIOS, system error failed of lock. The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is a collection of services on a ROM (read-only memory) chip. These services enable hardware and software, operating systems, applications, and communications between applications and devices. The BIOS services are loaded automatically into specific addresses, and should always be accessible. BIOS services are updated and expanded to handle newer devices and greater demands.

Every brand of BIOS is unique, and most computer hardware configurations are unique, so the following suggestions are general guidelines that should be used with respect to each individual situation.

Changing parallel port communication mode in the BIOS

During startup, note what key will access the "System Setup". This is typically a function key such as F2, F8, F10, a CTRL key combination, or the Delete key. Choose this option and enter the System error failed of lock Setup.

Once in the System Setup, look for the entry that controls "Parallel port mode". Frequently, this setting is located under IDE devices or Peripherals. Parallel port mode settings can include ECP, EPP, ECP+EPP, SPP, NORMAL, COMPATIBLE, BI-DIRECTIONAL, PS/2, or IBM-AT.

To enable NT recognition of the 3D Studio MAX hardware lock, set the parallel port to Normal, Compatible, Bi-directional, IBM-AT, system error failed of lock, ECP or SPP (usually only one of these options will be available). After choosing the appropriate communication mode, select Save and Exit, and restart the computer.

EPP is an 'Enhanced Parallel Port' mode that takes advantage of speedy communication protocols for modern printers. However, in most cases the Sentinel drivers will not work if the parallel port is configured for EPP mode. If a system error failed of lock is required to operate from the workstation running fatal error rc1022 expected #endif MAX, it may be necessary to have a second parallel port installed to take advantage of EPP communications for the printer.

BIOS with default DMA settings

Some BIOS, notably the Compaq-included EPP Runtime BIOS, do not have an obvious setting for parallel port mode. Instead, they have the parallel port mode default to a setting such as "DMA-3, IRQ 7". In the Compaq BIOS, DMA 3 is automatically set to EPP communication mode. This will prevent the 3DS MAX hardware lock from being recognized.

Thus, switching to one of the DMAs between 0 and 2 will allow 3DS MAX to run. Of course, the operator must pay attention to any other devices which may use DMA addresses (sound cards, and so on), so that the communications settings for these devices are not disturbed.

Please note that this example is specific to the Compaq BIOS. However, similar settings may exist for other BIOS. Therefore, if there are no apparent communications setting for the parallel port in the BIOS, contact the computer manufacturer to see if the port communication defaults to a mode that will not work with the 3DS MAX hardware lock.

To check the DMA settings, use the Microsoft Diagnostics executable. In NT versionuse the File Manager to browse to WINNT35/ SYSTEM32 Double-click on the executable file, then choose the DMA/Memory button. In NTselect the Resources tab, and then choose the DMA button.

Award BIOS

Conflicts with the 3D Studio MAX hardware lock have been reported on computers with newer Award BIOS that have the "Daylight Savings Time" option enabled. Edit the System Setup to disable this option, then re-install the hardware lock drivers as described in the technical document, Removing and Installing Hardware Lock Drivers.

Other Troubleshooting Suggestions:

The following are general suggestions to follow if 3D Studio MAX cannot recognize the hardware lock after following the steps outlined earlier in this document. While most of the suggestions below do not relate directly to 3D Studio MAX or the Sentinel Pro hardware lock, they can help solve related problems that may be the cause for the lock or drivers to fail.

  • Update the BIOS (check with your system manufacturer for updates). BIOS manufacturer, version, and date information appears at the bottom of the screen while booting the system. Hitting the PAUSE key at this point during startup should allow the operator to read the part number, the BIOS date and version. Sometimes this information is also listed upon entering "Setup" during startup.

  • Launch Windows NT from a stripped system. This can be done by entering the BIOS (System Setup). Disable any memory caching or shadow RAM, and system error failed of lock Windows NT in VGA mode. While this will slow down the computer, it is a temporary troubleshooting step, system error failed of lock. If MAX runs in a stripped environment, this indicates that there may be a hardware conflict or problem in the system.

Character Studio and Plug-In concerns:

Make sure the lock corresponds with Character Studio. When Character Studio is authorized, the authorization code is directly linked to the hardware lock for that installation of 3D Studio MAX. Installing a previously authorized version of Character Studio on a system with a different lock will result in the authorization dialog appearing. System error failed of lock the same authorization code will result in an "Incorrect authorization string"message.

Other Plug-ins from 3rd party vendors may operate the same way.
