System error 0x3010002 - any dialogue

Thank you for your wonderful video on Youtube on how to replace the belt. I ordered the belt from LPS and it arrived yesterday and needless to say I spent last night putting it in. With the help from your video I managed to replace it and put the machine back together again.

However, as soon as I plugged it in, and the machine turned on, the carriageway tried to make a pass over the service station but came to a stop and error message 20:10 came up on the screen. I do know you mentioned in your video that using wrong or longer screw for the fixing the service station to the printer will bring up this error. And I have used the original screws and at no point used wrong screws. I am a bit confused here.

Can you please give me some pointers as to how to get rid of this error.

Thanking you in advance for your kind assistance.

You indicated you had a 20:10 error and mentioned the service station.  I assume you mean error 21:10.  Please let me know if this is not correct.

The 21:10 error can be caused by anything that inhibits the service station motion.  The best way to troubleshoot the service station is to remove the motor and operate the white gears with your fingers to see if there is any obstruction to the movement of the sled with the 4 print head caps on it.  If there is something inhibiting the motion, that will need to be corrected.

The service station may be in the bracket incorrectly, causing the sled to hit the bottom of the carriage.  You may want to remove the SS and reinsert it.  There is a lip on the front edge of the SS that has to slide on top of a matching lip on the SS bracket.  That could also cause the problem.

The mounting screws for the SS are shorter than the cover screws.  If the cover screws were used to mount the SS, they cause an obstruction for the grey lever on the right side of the SS and the wiper bar will jam.

The data cable that carries the signals to and from the SS may have failed.  One end is connected to the small interconnect board to the rear of the control panel and the other end is connected to the electronics module.  The 24" cable can be ordered from: /c7770-60267-designjet-500-800-interconnect-ribbon-cable and the 42" cable can be ordered from:  /collections/designjet-500-800-parts-page/products/c7769-60298-designjet-500-800-interconnect-cable

The grey lever must be able to be moved to the 2 o'clock and 10 o'clock positions and it needs to stay in those positions without falling back to vertical.  If the lever does fall back to vertical, replace the Service Station:

The service station can be ordered from: /collections/designjet-500-800-parts-page/products/c7769-60149-r-designjet-500-800-service-station-74-95-w-exchange

Please let me know if you cannot solve the problem.

Oh, that's a very nice link... the pictures do help as well. 🙂

The other link you posted was very good, too...
I had gone ahead and given that a try last week (the gunk *was* pretty
nasty, but, didn't actually seem to have been the source of the error,
even after unplugging/clearing, etc.).

so, I'm replacing the part right now. This link pointed me right to the
directions for replacing it page number and all SWEET, with good
illustrations (directions, I don't need to steenkin directions... ;-p).

I really think this information shouldn't be so darned hard to find,
though. 🙂

Thanks a lot!

Thread: HP500 Designjet defies repair

Svc call on an HP DJ500 plotter with a broken/shredded belt. Order belt, replace meticulously per HP repair manual. Power up, get a 21:10 error. Reinspect work, order and replace service station (brand new HP OEM). Still 21:10, upgrade firmware to A.04.02 (the latest) successfully. Still 21:10. Go into service mode & read error log. From top to bottom:

21:10 (service station)
79:04 (firmware error)
21:10 (ss 1st report of)
86:01 (carriage movement)
62:03 (I/O thru parallel port) ??
79:04 (f/w error)
86:01 (carriage movement, tied to belt shred?)
79:04 (f/w error)

On normal powerup, menu button displays severe error 0x3010002 task: tmech line 796

Did I somehow introduce the 21:10 error? Should I disassemble the ss and right carriage end to see if I missed something?

Did I get a bad service station replacement?

Anybody?

Thanks.

HP Designjet 500/510/800 Series Printers - System Error 21:10

Introduction:

This document explains the general procedure to troubleshoot, isolate and solve System Error Code 21:10 or 21:11. This System Error refers mainly to the Service Station. However, in some cases, it can be also caused by other components.

Follow the steps listed below to accurately troubleshoot and isolate the problem.
Troubleshooting:

1.Disconnect the power cord.

2.Open the top window.

3.Manually move the carriage to the left (out from the Service Station).

NOTE: If the carriage does not manually move to the left, DO NOT FORCE IT. Try to restart a couple of times. Check if it is able to automatically come out at any point while trying to initialize. If so, unplug the power cord immediately. If even after this, the carriage is STILL NOT able to come out, contact technical support for specific instructions about unlocking the carriage.

4. Check for any visible obstructions (printing area and Service Station).

NOTE: If the carriage was able to move to the left, manually move it from side to side a couple of times making sure that there are no obstructions:

• Check that the carriage belt is in good conditions (tight and not worn-out or shredded).
• Clean and oil (synthetic oil) the carriage rod.
• Check that the Trailing Cables are flat and move freely following the movement of the carriage.
• Clean (not scratching) the Encoder Strip (using a non-abrasive liquid and a lint-free cloth).

IMPORTANT: Damage on ANY of the previous parts mean replacement of it as this will cause quality issues, errors or messages.

5. Remove all PRINTHEADS (PHs) from the carriage.

NOTE: In order to remove the PHs, release the blue latch on top of the carriage, then lift up the carriage cover. Use the blue handle on every PH to lift them up. Once they have been removed, make sure to properly close the carriage cover (blue latch engaging the purple hook), then leave the carriage in the middle of the printer. Close the Window.

6.Reconnect the power cord.

7.Restart the printer.

NOTE: If all goes fine, the printer will ask for PHs instead of showing the System Error. If the printer shows the System Error again, disconnect the printer for some seconds, reconnect it and restart. If required, repeat this process at least 3 more times. If the System Error definitely persists after several times, most likely the Service Station needs to be replaced.

8. Put the PHs back in when asked to do so.

NOTE: Once the printer asks for PHs, press ENTER to start with the replacement. The carriage will automatically come out of the Service Station. Then the display will ask to open the window and proceed with the replacement. Once they have been inserted, make sure to properly close the carriage cover (no need to move the carriage) and window.

IMPORTANT: Every PH has its own expiration date stamped on it. Expired PHs can be the cause of the System Error. If any rejection of PHs appears while replacing them or if the printer is unable to finish the PH alignment, then the expired PHs need to be replaced with new ones in warranty. If the issue gets solved but continues to appear from time to time, it is also important to replace them.

9. If no issue persists, verify functionality.

10. If the issue persists, perform FIRMWARE (FW) update.

NOTE: This is recommended ONLY as the last step and ONLY if the FW is not up to date. On the other hand, feel free to update the FW if the printer is able to get to ready at any point. This will improve the general functionality of the device.

IMPORTANT: For the DJ 500, it is recommended to remove the HPGL2 card (if installed) before updating the FW. For doing this, remove the Card Cover from the back of the Left Hand Cover. Then unscrew the 2 screws attaching the HPGL2 card to the Electronics Module. Finally, pull out the card.

To update the FW follow the next steps (it will ONLY work if the printer is connected via USB to the computer):

a. Download (www.hp.com/bizsupport), save and unzip the update file to your computer.

b. Ensure that the printer is SPECIAL X MODE (this is needed as the printer is not able to get to ready):

• Disconnect the power cord.
• Press the CANCEL button.
• Reconnect the power cord (while still pressing the CANCEL button).
• Wait until the display shows a flashing ‘X’.

c. Run the unzipped executable file. A program will be installed and then it will look for the printer automatically.

d. Follow the instructions to perform the update.

e. Once the update is complete, the front panel will indicate that the printer must be disconnected.

f. Disconnect the printer, wait some seconds and then reconnect it.

IMPORTANT: If the printer is able to get to ready at any point, there is NO need to put the printer in special X mode. It will be detected via USB or Network.

11. If even after following all the previous steps the issue persists, if you have questions or doubts, or if more assistance is needed, please contact your HP Representative or call HP Technical Support.

I am planning to do a blog series on malware analysis using the Zeus sample that I recently received in an email. The idea is not only to share what it does, but to focus mostly on sufficient details (without boring the average reader to death) of how it does what it does, and techniques and tools an analyst can use during the analysis. We will be looking at it through various angles and tools.

It is quite common for malware to have several layers of encoding obfuscations and go through various steps of downloaders. Therefore, often a quick first stab at it is to let it run through a locally deployed automated dynamic analysis sandboxing solution such as Cuckoo or use various freely available services such as malwr. (Caveat: hastily submitting a targetted attack sample to an online service is not a very good idea, as this can alert the attackers that they have been discovered, but this is not we are talking about today). Furthermore, there is a cat and mouse chase going with malware defeating or making it hard to do automatic analysis and reverse engineering, so in many cases it makes sense to just take a look at an infected system via memory forensics and see how malware has established itself on our system, this way we can discover the various different aspects of malware and can work backwards and forewords on pieces that we are interested in further learning about.

In this post we will take a look at what can we learn from an infected system, using Volatility and how can we extract the final piece of decrypted/decoded/unpacked malicious code for further analysis.

So it begins with someone who spells her last name with a lower case letter sending me an email so I can review the export License and invoice:

Kindly open to see export License and payment invoice attached, meanwhile we sent the balance payment yesterday. Please confirm if it has settled in your account or you can call if there is any problem.

Thanks

Karen parker

But there is a problem I (and most likely you too) don’t get paid to review licenses and invoices. So let’s not worry about the information in the attachment for humans but review what it has for our machines.

We will use Volatality a free available and very powerful tool for memory forensics.

The first step is to acquire memory image, we will use the freely available VirtualBox to run a Windows XP VM, and using the technique described here, get a memory dump of the machine after running the attachment that contained an exe (invoice copy) file. More specifically I used the technique mentioned in section RAM_dump_with_VirtualBox:_via_pgmphystofile

The first thing I would do is use psxview which enumerates processes using various techniques and is likely to detect processes hidden by rootkits as well.

As we will see below that the process has already exited and is not resident in memory, as an example of using knowledge from memory forensics to identify interesting pieces and investigate further, if we wanted to get more information about this suspicious process we can go back to VM, reverting it to a clean snapshot, infecting again and looking at procmon logs or via logs from automated dynamic analysis solution. Let’s take a look at log from procmon.exe:

What we have seen so far is that using the Run registry key the malware sets up a process to be started when Windows start, but the process then exits soon, one possible way that malware is still executing is by injecting code in the trusted processes. Volatility has several plugins that let us discover this and extract the injected code, note that this extracted code is very likely to be neither obfuscated nor encrypted/encoded, as this is what will be running in the context of the trusted processe(s) and is usually injected there after unpacking/decrypting etc.

Volatility’s has a bunch of useful commands for Windows Malware Hunting, you can check them out here. We will look at some of them mostly the ones that gave us interesting information in this case.

ApiHooks

Running the apihooks command, we can have an idea of what routines does the Malware hook, and will also give an highlevel idea what the malware is upto.

Taking a look at all the unique functions hooked we see a very interesting list:

Function: activeds.dll!<unknown> at 0x76e1ef81Function: CRYPT32.dll!PFXImportCertStore at 0x77af012fFunction: ntdll.dll!LdrLoadDll at 0x7c91632dFunction: ntdll.dll!NtCreateThread at 0x7c90d1aeFunction: ntdll.dll!ZwCreateThread at 0x7c90d1aeFunction: Secur32.dll!DecryptMessage at 0x77fea6dcFunction: Secur32.dll!DeleteSecurityContext at 0x77fe2d26

So we see that malware is hooking low level socket communication functions, higher level WININET internet communication routines, crypto routines, along with thread creation and dll load routines.

The processes that were hooked were:

Process: 1040 (wuauclt.exe)

Process: 1056 (svchost.exe)

Process: 1532 (explorer.exe)

Process: 1548 (wscntfy.exe)

Process: 1788 (VBoxTray.exe)

Process: 1796 (ctfmon.exe)

I am assuming it would be hooking other interesting processes like browsers, had they been running at the time dump was taken.

So back to how do we extract the binary comprising of the injected code, fortunately, volatility has another plugin malfind that scans processes for memory pages containing injected code and dumps it as a binary.

Running malfind on the image we get various entries showing various different binaries injected in a process, let’s take a look at what we see in regards to the ntdll.dll!NtCreateThread being hooked in explorer.exe

We see that malfind detects injected binaries in three different regions in explorer.exe, and it dumps three binaries (if malfind was run with -D option) corresponding to these regions.

Process: explorer.exe Pid: 1532 Address: 0x2b10000

Process: explorer.exe Pid: 1532 Address: 0x3010000

Based on the apihook output, the hook for CreateThread is at 0x303995c, let’s take a look at the malfind output for 0x3010000

Process: explorer.exe Pid: 1532 Address: 0x3010000Vad Tag: VadS Protection: PAGE_EXECUTE_READWRITEFlags: CommitCharge: 72, MemCommit: 1, PrivateMemory: 1, Protection: 60x03010000  4d 5a 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   MZ…………..0x03010010  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   …………….0x03010020  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   …………….0x03010030  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 20 01 00 00   …………….0x3010000 4d               DEC EBP

0x3010006 0000             ADD [EAX], AL

0x3010008 0000             ADD [EAX], AL

So we see that it successfully finds the MZ header as well, that may not be true every time, but we can still work with that, as most of the time the header is corrupted anyways.

At this point we use impscan that scans and shows us which functions are imported, so we can give it a process id, and a base address where we think the injected code starts and it will tell us the about the imported functions:

For what we are looking at the moment if we run it as

impscan -v -b 0x03010000 -p 1532

This gives us output like

IAT        Call       Module               Function———- ———- ——————– ——–0x03011000 0x77df78ab ADVAPI32.dll         IsWellKnownSid0x03011004 0x77ddf10f ADVAPI32.dll         ConvertSidToStringSidW0x03011008 0x77e34ce5 ADVAPI32.dll         InitiateSystemShutdownExW0x0301100c 0x77ddd767 ADVAPI32.dll         RegSetValueExW0x03011010 0x77dd7bd9 ADVAPI32.dll         RegEnumKeyExW

This also, to some extent, gives us an idea of what the malicious code is upto.

impscan also used to generate an IDC script to be run in IDA while analyzing the corresponding binary, it does not do that any more, but we can run a script on impscan’s output and get entries like

MakeName(0x03011000, "ADVAPI32.dll.IsWellKnownSid");MakeName(0x03011004, "ADVAPI32.dll.ConvertSidToStringSidW");MakeName(0x03011008, "ADVAPI32.dll.InitiateSystemShutdownExW");Edit: Michael Hale Ligh (@iMHLv2) pointed out that idc script is still outputted with --output=idc [--output-file=test.idc]

We can then open the binary dumped by malfind in IDA (make sure you select open as a Binary File, and not the default “Portable Executable ..”, as the header is usually corrupted or not available and IDA may get confused. Don’t forget to rebase the binary to correspond to the the address it is loaded in memory. After that you can do

File -> Script Command and run the above mentioned MakeName entries, and start reverse engineering with dynamic analysis of the injected code.

This is it for now. I look forward to continue this series on Zeus analysis and would like to your comments.

My VM image soon fetched some AV that was very concerned and was telling me how my machine was infected, but needed some $$$ to fix it.

I look forward to continuing this series, and welcome your comments and feedback.

Thank you for your wonderful video on Youtube on how to replace the belt. I ordered the belt from LPS and it arrived yesterday and needless to say I spent last night putting it in. With the help from your video I managed to replace it and put the machine back together again.

However, as soon as I plugged it in, system error 0x3010002, and the machine turned on, the carriageway tried to make a pass over the service station but came system error 0x3010002 a stop and error message 20:10 came up on the screen. I do know you mentioned in your video that using wrong or longer screw for the fixing the service station to the printer will bring up this error. And I have used the original screws and at no point used wrong screws. I am a bios error disable 14424 confused here.

Can you please give me some pointers as to how to get rid of this error.

Thanking you in advance for your kind assistance.

You indicated you had a 20:10 error and mentioned the service station.  I assume icq error 10053 mean error 21:10.

If the cover screws were used to mount the SS, system error 0x3010002, they cause an obstruction for the grey system error 0x3010002 on the right side of the SS and the wiper bar will jam.

Oh, system error 0x3010002, that's a very nice link. the pictures do help as well. 🙂

The other link system error 0x3010002 posted was very good, too.
I had gone ahead and given that a try last week (the gunk *was* pretty
nasty, system error 0x3010002, but, didn't actually seem to have been the source of the error, system error 0x3010002,
even after unplugging/clearing, etc.).

so, I'm replacing the part right now. This link pointed me right to the
directions for replacing it page number and all SWEET, with good
illustrations (directions, system error 0x3010002, I don't need to steenkin directions. ;-p).

I really think this information shouldn't be so darned hard to find,
though. 🙂

Thanks a lot!

HP Designjet 500/510/800 Series Printers - System Error 21:10

Introduction:

This document explains the general procedure to troubleshoot, isolate and solve System Error Code 21:10 or 21:11. This System Error refers mainly to the Service Station. However, in some cases, system error 0x3010002, it can be also caused by other components.

Follow the steps listed below zbrush executable error accurately troubleshoot and isolate the problem.

If so, system error 0x3010002, unplug the power cord immediately, system error 0x3010002.

NOTE: In order to remove the PHs, release the blue latch on top of the carriage, system error 0x3010002, then lift up the carriage cover, system error 0x3010002. Use the blue handle on every PH to lift them up. Once they have been removed, make sure to properly close the carriage cover (blue latch engaging the purple hook), then leave the carriage in the middle of the printer, system error 0x3010002. Close the Window.

6.Reconnect the power cord.

7.Restart the printer.

NOTE: If all goes fine, system error 0x3010002, the printer will ask for PHs instead of showing the System Error. If the printer shows the System Error again, disconnect the printer for some seconds, reconnect it and restart. If required, repeat this process at least 3 more times. If the System Error definitely persists after several times, most likely the Service Station needs to be replaced, system error 0x3010002.

9. If no issue persists, system error 0x3010002, verify functionality, system error 0x3010002.

10. If the issue persists, perform FIRMWARE (FW) update.

NOTE: This is mustek bearpaw error ONLY as the last step and ONLY if the FW is not up to date.

Then unscrew the system error 0x3010002 screws attaching the HPGL2 card to the Electronics Module. Finally, pull out the card.

To update the FW follow the next steps (it will ONLY work if the printer is connected via USB to the computer):

a. Download (www.hp.com/bizsupport), save and unzip the update file to your computer, system error 0x3010002.

b. Ensure that the printer is SPECIAL X MODE (this is needed as the printer is not able to get to ready):

• Disconnect the power cord.
• Press the CANCEL button.
• Reconnect the power cord (while still pressing the CANCEL button).
• Wait until the display shows a flashing ‘X’.

c. Run the unzipped executable file, system error 0x3010002. A program will be installed and then it will look for the printer automatically.

d. Follow the instructions to perform the update.

e, system error 0x3010002. Once the update is complete, system error 0x3010002, the front panel will indicate that the printer must be disconnected.

f. Disconnect the printer, wait some seconds and then reconnect it.

IMPORTANT: If the printer is able to get to ready at any point, system error 0x3010002, there is NO need to put the printer in special X system error 0x3010002. It will be detected via Canon mp150 e3 error or Network.

(Caveat: hastily submitting a targetted attack sample to an online service is not a very good idea, as this can alert the attackers that they have been discovered, but this is not we are talking about today), system error 0x3010002. Furthermore, there is a cat and mouse chase going with malware defeating or making it hard to do automatic analysis and reverse engineering, so in many cases it makes sense to just take a look at an infected system via memory forensics and see how malware has established itself on dll error sshnas21.dll system, this way we can discover the various different aspects of malware and can work backwards and forewords on pieces that we are interested in further learning about.

In this post we will take a look at what can we learn from an infected system, using Volatility and how can we extract the final piece of decrypted/decoded/unpacked malicious code for further analysis.

So it begins with someone who spells her last name with a lower case letter sending me system error 0x3010002 email so I can review the export License and invoice:

Kindly open to see export License and payment invoice attached, meanwhile we sent system error 0x3010002 balance payment yesterday. Please confirm if it has settled in your account or you can call if there is any problem.

Thanks

Karen parker

But there is a problem I (and system error 0x3010002 likely you too) don’t get paid to review licenses and invoices. So let’s not worry about the information error 305 bluegiga the attachment for humans but review system error 0x3010002 it has for our machines.

The first thing I would do is use psxview which 300 player initialization failed error 1009 processes using various techniques error #2038 htaccess is likely to detect processes hidden by system error 0x3010002 as well.

As we will see below that the process has already exited and is not resident in memory, as an example of using knowledge from memory forensics to identify interesting socket error 10013 and investigate further, system error 0x3010002, if we wanted to get more information about this suspicious process we can go back to VM, reverting it to a clean snapshot, infecting again and looking at procmon logs or via logs from automated dynamic analysis solution.

Volatility’s has a bunch of useful commands for Windows Malware Hunting, system error 0x3010002, you can check them out here. We will look at some of them mostly the ones that gave us interesting information in this case.

ApiHooks

Running the apihooks command, we can have an idea of what routines does the Malware hook, and will also give an system error 0x3010002 idea what the malware is upto.

Taking a look at all the unique functions hooked we see a very interesting list:

So we see that malware is hooking low level socket communication functions, system error 0x3010002, higher level WININET internet communication routines, crypto routines, system error 0x3010002, along with thread creation and dll load routines.

The processes that were hooked were:

Process: 1040 (wuauclt.exe)

Process: 1056 (svchost.exe)

Process: 1532 (explorer.exe)

Process: 1548 (wscntfy.exe)

Process: 1788 (VBoxTray.exe)

Process: 1796 (ctfmon.exe)

I am assuming it would be hooking other interesting processes like browsers, had they been running at the time dump was taken.

So back to how do we extract the binary comprising of the injected code, fortunately, volatility has another plugin malfind that scans processes for memory pages containing injected code and dumps it as a binary.

Running malfind on the image we get various entries showing various different binaries injected in a process, system error 0x3010002, let’s take a look at what we see in regards to the ntdll.dll!NtCreateThread being hooked in explorer.exe

We see that malfind detects injected binaries in three different regions in explorer.exe, system error 0x3010002, and it dumps three binaries (if malfind was run with -D option) corresponding to these regions.

Process: explorer.exe Pid: 1532 Address: 0x2b10000

Process: explorer.exe Pid: 1532 Address: 0x3010000

Process: explorer.exe Pid: 1532 Address: 0x3d920000

Based on the apihook output, the hook for CreateThread is at 0x303995c, let’s take a look at the malfind output for 0x3010000

Process: explorer.exe Pid: 1532 Address: 0x3010000Vad Tag: VadS Protection: PAGE_EXECUTE_READWRITEFlags: CommitCharge: 72, MemCommit: 1, PrivateMemory: 1, Protection: 60x03010000  4d 5a 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   MZ………&hellip.0x03010010  00 00 00 00 00 00 system error 0x3010002 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   …………&hellip.0x03010020  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   …………&hellip.0x03010030  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 20 01 00 host system error, pci problems? …………&hellip.0x3010000 4d               DEC EBP

0x3010001 5a               POP EDX

0x3010002 0000             ADD [EAX], AL

0x3010004 0000             ADD [EAX], AL

0x3010006 0000             ADD [EAX], AL

0x3010008 0000             ADD [EAX], AL

So we see that it successfully system error 0x3010002 the MZ header as well, that may not be true every time, system error 0x3010002, but system error 0x3010002 can still work with that, as most of the time the header is corrupted anyways.

MakeName(0x03011000, system error 0x3010002, "ADVAPI32.dll.IsWellKnownSid");MakeName(0x03011004, "ADVAPI32.dll.ConvertSidToStringSidW");MakeName(0x03011008, system error 0x3010002, "ADVAPI32.dll.InitiateSystemShutdownExW");Edit: Michael Hale Ligh (@iMHLv2) pointed out that idc script is still outputted with --output=idc [--output-file=test.idc]

We can then open the binary dumped by malfind in IDA (make sure you select open as a Binary File, system error 0x3010002, and not the default “Portable Executable .”, as the header is usually corrupted or not available and IDA may get confused. Don’t forget to rebase the binary to correspond to the the address it is loaded in memory. After that you can do

File -> Script Command and run the above mentioned Cmos chechsum error - defaultsloader entries, and start reverse engineering with dynamic analysis of the injected code.
