I was just trying to edit permissions to a registry key on a remote computer when I realized that I needed to be using my admin account since I can't connect remotely to that registry without it.

I tried to start it up with the standard sudo-like command for windows to run it with my admin account from an administrator command prompt...

Batchfile

C:\WINDOWS\system32>runas /user:mydomain/myadminacct "C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe" Enter the password for mydomain/myadminacct: Attempting to start C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe as user "mydomain/myadminacct" ... RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe 740: The requested operation requires elevation.

Then I looked up a thread with that error message where they stated that the command needs to be run from cmd first, so I ran the command with:

Batchfile

C:\WINDOWS\system32>runas /user:mydomain/myadminacct "cmd /c ^C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe^" Enter the password for mydomain/myadminacct: Attempting to start cmd /c ^C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe^ as user "mydomain/myadminacct" ...

and then I was able to run it with the stated user just fine, so what did who change where to require you to type the command that way, and what the heck does it have to do with permissions?  The Thread states that it only works like that after Windows 8.1.  And how does this qualify as elevation if I'm already using an administrative command prompt using my administrator account to run it?!?!?!

Fix The Requested Operation Requires Elevation on Windows 11/10/7

Some Windows users got the error “The requested operation requires elevation” when trying to open the files from an external hard drive.  It’s really annoying when you just don’t know how to fix it at all.

Not to worry. It’s an easy problem to work out. Here in this article, we will be showing you how to fix it on your Windows step by step with images.

Try these fixes:

You don’t have to try them all; just work your way down the list until you find the one that works for you.

  1. Repair system files
  2. Reset folder permissions
  3. Run the file as administrator
  4. Turn off the UAC on your PC
  5. Get tech support

Method 1: Repair system files

When system files are corrupted or missing, surely it will cause some issues now and then. The requested operation requires elevation could be one of the problems. Therefore, we recommend you check your system files on a regular basis to prevent potential problems.

You can do it manually or automatically.

Repair system files Automatically (Recommended)

If you want a professional and powerful tool that is easy to use, Restoro is the one that makes things easy. It will scan your computer, diagnose your system configuration, identify faulty system files, and repair them automatically.

It is tailored to your specific system and is working in a private and automatic way. It will firstly check hardware-related issues to identify problems, and then security issues (powered by Avira Antivirus), and finally it detects programs that crash, missing system files. Once complete, it will find a solution to your specific problem.

  1. Download and install Restoro.

  2. Open Restoro and it will run a free scan of your PC.  (This may take a few minutes and you’ll get a detailed report of your PC status after this.)
  3. Review the report and click Start Repair to start the repair process. (This requires the full version – which comes with a 60-day Money-Back Guarantee.)
  4. Restart your computer to see if the issue persists or not.

If you encounter any issues when using Restoro, feel free to contact their support team.

Run System File Check manually

System File Checker is a built-in tool to check for corrupt, damaged system files and manage to restore them if there’re any. However, this tool can only diagnose major system files, and won’t deal with damaged DLL, Windows Registry key, etc.

1) Press the Windows key on your keyboard, then type cmd (DON’T press Enter). Windows will display a list of programs that match your search. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.

If prompted to provide administrator permission, click Yes.

2) In the black Command Prompt window, type:

sfc /scannow

Then press Enter on your keyboard.

Windows will scan your system for corrupted files, and attempt to fix any it finds. The results will display in this window, so please leave it open until the operation is complete.

If the scan finds no problems, you know your system files aren’t the cause of Windows 10 randomly freezing, and you can move on to the next fix.

Method 2: Reset folder permissions

“The requested operation requires elevation” means that in order to open the file you’ll need the elevated permission of a local administrator to take ownership and gain access. So we can change the ownership of the external hard drive to get rid of the problem.

1) Log out of your user account and then log in with the administrator account.

2) Locate your external hard drive. It could be in the folder named Computer/My computer/This PC.

3) Right-click on your external hard drive. Then click Properties.

4) On Properties windows, view on Security tab and click Advanced. Then tap on Owner panel and click Edit.

5) Choose the user you want to set as the owner of the file. Then check on Replace owner on subcontainers and objects. Click Apply > OK to save the settings.

If it doesn’t work, move to the next fix.

Method 3: Run the file as administrator

The lack of privileges may cause an error message when opening the file from the external hard drive. In this case, you can run the file or the program as the administrator.

1) Right-click the file on the external hard drive, then select Properties.

2) Go to the Compatibility tab and check Run this program as an administrator.

3) Save the changes by clicking Apply > OK.

If the issue persists, move to the next fix.

Method 4: Turn off the UAC on your PC

The User Account Control is a security feature that helps prevent unauthorized changes to your Windows 10 computer. Therefore, the UAC settings may be the real culprit behind this error. Follow the steps below to change the UAC settings.

1) Type change user account in the search box and press the Enter key to open it.

 2) Drag the slider to Never notify. Then click OK to save the change.

3) Reboot your PC and then open the file on the external drive to ensure the error has been fixed or not.

If it brings no luck, move to the final method.

Method 5: Get tech support

If none of the fixes above worked, or you just don’t have the time or confidence to troubleshoot the problem for yourself, getting help from a 1-on-1 online expert seems a good option. JustAnswer is the online service where you can ask a question and get an answer from a verified expert online anywhere anytime.

Error 740: The requested operation requires elevation

The message "Error 740: The requested operation requires elevation" indicates that WinZip has been runas error 740 requires elevation to Run as administrator. Some people might do this to make it possible for WinZip to create and/or edit Zip files in protected folders, such as those inside the Program Files folder. That configuration will work for some uses of WinZip, but it will then cause this issue for other uses.

Error Message

User Account Control in Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7 causes applications to run as a "user" rather than as an "administrator" by default. Certain actions you take will cause User Account Control to display a dialog which will allow you to elevate your permissions level to the administrator level. A program that is running with user permissions, however, will not cause User Account Control to offer you this option.

If you right click a file or folder in order to use the WinZip context menu for zipping (see the picture below), and if WinZip is configured to always Run as administrator, the error above will occur.

Context Menu
WinZip Properties

The configuration mentioned above can be found in the Compatibility tab of WinZip Properties. If you right click the WinZip desktop shortcut and choose Properties, the dialog will open. If you find the check box next to Run this program as an administrator is checked, Windows will require WinZip to always run with administrator permissions. In other words, any time you start WinZip, using one of the shortcut icons or by double clicking a Zip file, a UAC dialog will display requiring and enabling you to elevate your permissions.

The "Run as administrator" configuration causes a conflict with context menus, such as the WinZip one pictured. Conext menus are contolled by Windows Explorer (explorer.exe), and that is running as a user by default. Windows Explorer is unable, then, to elevate permissions, which is necessary to cause WinZip to run, since it is set to always run as administrator. You will need to remove the check from this box to stop seeing this error.

Note: You should also click the Change settings for all users button and uncheck the Run this program as an administrator box if you find that it is checked in the all users dialog.

The User Account Control is a security feature that helps prevent unauthorized changes to your Windows 10 computer. Therefore, the UAC settings may be the real culprit behind this error. Follow the steps below to change the UAC settings.

What is UAC (User Account Control)?

One of the reasons is the UAC – User Account Control, which presents a pop-up asking for admin login and password because it’s trying to make changes to the system. For example, suppose you downloaded a movie/song/picture and then all of a sudden it’s asking you to run it as administrator – it will immediately raise a red flag. Achtung, something dodgy!

Also, if you were to leave your computer unattended, somebody could use it to install, for example, a keylogger, which could easily intercept your passwords and send them to the attacker… well, there are many other things that could happen.

Getting around the UAC

Anyway, sometimes it could be necessary to allow certain programs to run as Administrator while using a standard user account. Runas error 740 requires elevation management tools, antivirus programs, “tweakers” all get around this restriction by running themselves as a service plus graphical application but most programs aren’t supposed to be run as services yet they still require admin rights.

What can one do when it’s necessary to allow standard users to have programs run as admin? For example, you want to allow your kids to play games on a regular user account but want to have some kind of monitoring program to run at all times? I’ve been searching for a solution for several hours and finally found something. It’s rather crude and not very secure but works nonetheless. Also, most people won’t be able to figure out how to exploit the vulnerability anyway. Security through obscurity?

There is a service utility “runas” that allows specifying alternate credentials. For example, launching “runas /user:Administrator devmgmt.msc” will allow using Device Manager as Administrator and not just a standard user. The difference? You can install drivers, disable/enable devices and so on. The problem? It’s going to ask for the admin password!

That’s just fine when you are the computer owner and have both admin and standard account but certainly not acceptable when you don’t want someone else to know your password. However, there is a little-known switch “/savecred” that allows storing admin credentials on a standard user account. Basically, you would just create a shortcut and run it once with the /savecred switch and be done with it…

Well, it used to work several years ago but doesn’t work in Windows 10 now. When you run the command, it will say RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run… 740: the requested operation requires elevation Duh… Of course, it does, runtime error 216 at what we are trying to achieve here! Turns out, you can still run CMD (command prompt) as admin, so… this trick allows encapsulating runas error 740 requires elevation needs to be run in the cmd command.

Follow me: runas /user:Administrator /savecred “cmd /c “mmc devmgmt.msc”” Here ” … ” is used to put an extra set of parentheses inside another. Whoila! Once you run this command in a standard user account, you can create a shortcut to it and give to your “less privileged” user. I’m not sure how long this will work or how long the supplied credentials last but it seems to work after a reboot. runas error 740 requires elevation

Read these next.

I was just trying to edit permissions to a registry key on a remote computer when I realized that I needed to be using my admin account since I can't connect remotely to that registry without it.

I tried to start it up with the standard sudo-like command for windows to run it with my admin account from an administrator command prompt.

Batchfile

C:\WINDOWS\system32>runas /user:mydomain/myadminacct "C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe" Enter the password for mydomain/myadminacct: Attempting to start C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe as user "mydomain/myadminacct" . RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe 740: The requested operation requires elevation.

Then I looked up a thread with that error message where they stated that the command needs to be run from cmd first, so I ran the command with:

Batchfile

C:\WINDOWS\system32>runas /user:mydomain/myadminacct "cmd /c ^C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe^" Enter the password for mydomain/myadminacct: Attempting to start cmd /c ^C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe^ as user "mydomain/myadminacct" ., runas error 740 requires elevation.

and then I was able to run it with the stated user just fine, so what did who change where to require you to type the command that way, and what the heck does it have to do with permissions?  The Thread states that it only works like that after Windows 8.1.  And how does this qualify as elevation if I'm already using an administrative command prompt using my administrator account to run it?!?!?!
