usb serial converter on windows 7 64 not working with custom vb6 program

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for posting about your USB serial adapter. I’m sorry you are having troubles with it.

We have seen issues with mscomm32 in vb6 with Windows 64-bit computers, and it seems to be a known error at Microsoft. There is a KB article about it here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318784

Their suggested solution is to contact the manufacturer for a new driver, but it looks like you have the latest installed.

Maybe there is a workaround in the meantime?

Also, we have seen some issues with the driver installation dated 2/5/13 that actually installed a driver earlier than expected, and there is an updated driver package currently available that ensures the latest versions are actually installed. Could you try uninstalling the current driver and installing this one? The link is:

Thank you,

David

RS232 (MSCOMM32) on windows 10 64bit

RS232 (MSCOMM32) on windows 10 64bit

tomk3(Programmer)

(OP)

Hello to all,

we read data from an external device and write it to a file with a little program (VERY old) in VFP using MSCOMM32

The PCs were XP then windows7 then windows10 32 bit (IT succeeded in transfering MSCOMM32 without changes in our tool)

Now they have a new PC with windows10 64 bit and an RS232 card and "transfered" MSCOMM again.

Problem
The program starts without error, but it receives "rubbish"
Interface settings are the same (9600 8 N 1 ) for program (active X) and interface card.

Questions
Does anybody know about that, why its receiving rubbish ?

Can you recommend another control (64bit) which can receive data and can be used with VFP / VFPA
(I found https://www.adontec.com/, but not sure on that)
or
Do you know a program which monitors RS232 and stores input into a file (background, without user interaction)

Thanks a lot in advance

Thread: COM error under Windows 10

This post concerns serial communications with a Teensy 3.2 under Windows 10 - Teensy code is therefore not relevant and hence not provided.

Using VB6 and MSCOMM32.OCX to access Teensy 3.2 works well for me under Windows 7 and 8.x. However, under Windows 10 I get an 8020 device not available error. An internet search shows many other people have this issue (with devices other than the Teensy) but MS has not come up with a fix for MSCOMM32 and might be unable to reproduce the error. There has been some evidence that it is related to the serial driver being used. While installing my software my installer runs serial_install.exe. Could the issue be related to this? Has anyone else had this problem.

Switching to the third party SCOMM32.OCX fixes the 8020 bug but SCOMM32 is actually very different from MSCOMM32 under the hood - it badly breaks my VB6 code. If there is a simpler fix I want to go that route.

Yes, yes, I know I should switch to .net. It is on my to-do list but shutting down my business for a couple of months+ while I do a rather large port from VB6 to .net is not a viable solution. I'll do the port when business goes quiet or when I am forced to by customers. Fortunately for me it looks like Windows 10 is not popular with corporate IT people, but I am expecting an order from a Japanese customer who insists on Windows 10.

P.S. I really, really like the Teensy system (boards + Teensyduino under VisualMicro in VS.net). Since I switched from a lame 8-bit system, life has got a lot, lot easier. Sincere thanks to you Paul.

How to register/activate ActiveX component MSCOMM32.OCX on Windows 7

Hi,

This is a follow on document to my previous blog on “Read COMM port using ABAP w/o third party software”. In this blog I will try to explain step-by-step on how to download and activate Windows activeX control MSCOM32.OCX on the client PC where the Weighbridge’s serial port is connected.

Go to the link http://activex.microsoft.com/controls/vb6/mscomm32.cab and download the file mscomm32.ocx

If you are running Windows on 32 bit machine Copy the file that you have downloaded to C:\Windows\System32 folder.

However, if you are running windows on 64 bit machine then copy this file in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder

How to activate / re-register MSCOMM32.OCX from an elevated command prompt (Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8):

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Type “command” in the search box… DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
  3. While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
  4. You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
  5. Click Yes.
  6. Make sure you have changed the path to C:\Windows\System32 if you are on 32 bit machine /wp-content/uploads/2014/10/32bit_554801.jpg
  7. or C:\Windows\ SysWOW64 if you are on 64 bit machine64 bit.jpg
  8. Type the following command: regsvr32 /u MSCOMM32.OCX.
  9. Hit ENTER. This will UN-REGISTER your file./wp-content/uploads/2014/10/unregister_554804.jpg
  10. Type the following command: regsvr32 /i MSCOMM32.OCX.
  11. Hit ENTER. register with i.jpg
  12. If this gives any error the type the following regsvr32  MSCOMM32.OCX.
  13. Hit ENTER. This will RE-REGISTER your file.register without i.jpg
  14. Close the command prompt window.
  15. Re-start the system.

Regards,

Firoz.

usb serial converter on windows 7 64 not working with custom vb6 program

The link is:

http://plugable.com/drivers/prolific

Thank you,

David

Error 8020 mscomm32 error reading comm device Error reading comm device

I have an application that reacts to comm events by reading the input and
processing it using a double-buffered approach.
The application using this code has worked fine for several years on Win95
Win98
The data input stream is constant at 4800baud, no handshaking is used.

Recently we deployed the application onto some NT4 SP5 machines, and we have
now started to get the error:

Error 8020 - Error reading comm device

At vary random scsi error buffer.

Does anyone have similar experiances?
Any idea what the cause is?
Any idea what the fix is?

Thanks
Sara.

Error 8020 - Error reading comm device
I've seen it too!
At first it started happening on a PCMCIA Cardphone but now I've seen it on
COM1 from a GPS receiver.
The only way I could get round it was to use API functions to read from and
write to the COM port.

Click here for tips migrating from v3p10 (or an older version) to v3p11!

Also available: GUI v3p11 exe only,

GUI v3p10 , GUI v3p10 exe only , GUI v3p8 , GUI v3p8 exe only , GUI v3p7 , GUI v3p6.

If you experience problems or have questions related to the software, have a look at my Frequently asked Questions page (first).

The GUI makes use of a number of objects which reside in additional .ocx files. Examples of these object are the serial communication object which resides in mscomm32.ocx, the progress bar used to indicate the status of the heater which resides in MSCOMCTL.OCX and the Common Dialog Forms that are e.g. used to browse for a file which reside in comdlg32.ocx. On a computer which has Visual Basic 6 installed, these components are usually present. However, if the program is distributed to other computers these files, together with some .dll files need to be installed.

Fortunately the Visual Basic Package includes the Package & Deployment Wizard, which automatically installs these components when they are missing. The Package & Deployment Wizard, first analyzes the project to see which components and additional files are required. It then generates a Cabinet (.cab) file which basically is a zip file which includes the program executable as well as all the other files. A setup application unpacks the compressed file and copies the .ocx and .dll to the system folders and registers the files in the registry file.

Installing the V3.5 Graphical User Interface.

Installing the GUI is straightforward:

  1. If your computer does not have a native COM port you will need to have a USB to serial adapter. If you buy one make sure it uses an FTDI chipset (see remarks at the end of this section). Before installing the GUI I recommend to install the USB -> Serial adapter driver first. Make sure that the communication protocol is set to: 9600 baud, 1 stop bit, no parity check. Make sure that you know to what COM port number the adapter is assigned.
  2. Download the zip file to a directory.
  3. Unzip the zip file.
  4. Double-click setup.
  5. Follow the instructions of the setup program.
  6. Start the uTracer GUI from your program list
Thats all!

I tested the installation of the GUI on my overfull XP laptop, as well as on the almost virgin Windows 7 laptop of my son (top picture). In both case the installation proceeded without a problem. There was however a problem with the USB to Serial converter on the Windows 7 platform. When the GUI tried to read the COM port, the program crashed with a Run time error 8020, Error reading comm device. A search on internet revealed that this particular problem only occurres for USB to serial converters based on the Prolific chipset, and only under Windows Vista or Windows 7. Indeed I used a Sweex adapter based on the Prolific chip set. Fortunately, when I tried a Digitus DA-70156 USB to Serial adapter with an FTDI chip set it worked flawlessly.

If you consider building your own uTracer I strongly recommend to download the GUI and test first it. It is very easy to test the GUI and the communication of the GUI with the (emulated) COM port, without having the actual uTracer hardware connected. Although it is possible to test the GUI with the COM port just open, a more thorough check is possible if the COM port is fooled by connecting the transmit pin to the receive pin. The small dummy uTracer circuit on the right shows how such a circuit can be wired on a 9-pin female RS232 (DB9) connector. Pins 2 and 3 are the data pins. The other wiring makes sure that the handshake signals are properly bypassed.

To test the GUI, first install it as described above. To have a 100% fail safe test, connect the dummy uTracer circuit to the COM port. Start the uTracer and click the Debug command button. Select the proper COM port number and press the Ping command button. Pressing the Ping button will cause the GUI to send two command strings to the uTracer. The first string is a

usb serial converter on windows 7 64 not working with custom vb6 program

Thank you,

David

Error 8020 - Error reading comm device

Error 8020 - Error reading comm device

I have an application that reacts to comm events by reading the input and
processing it using a double-buffered approach.
The application using this code has worked fine for several years on Win95
Win98
The data input stream is constant at 4800baud, no handshaking is used.

Recently we deployed the application onto some NT4 SP5 machines, and we have
now started to get the error:

Error 8020 - Error reading comm device

At vary random intervals.

Does anyone have similar experiances?
Any idea what the cause is?
Any idea what the fix is?

Thanks
Sara.

I've seen it too!
At first it started happening on a PCMCIA Cardphone but now I've seen it on
COM1 from a GPS receiver.
The only way I could get round it was to use API functions to read from and
write to the COM port.

Phil.
