Dynamic IP Setup:

The second method is to configure the WAN port on MikroTik Routerboard as a DHCP Client, so that the WAN port is dynamically assigned and IP address belonging to the DHCP pool on the main router when an ethernet cable is connected from the LAN port of the main router to the WAN port.
Follow these steps to set up WAN port as a DHCP client:
- Go to IP -> DHCP Client
- Click on ‘+’ to add a new entry.
- In ‘DHCP’ tab, select Interface as ‘ether1’
Leave ‘Add Peer DNS’ and ‘Add Peer NTP’ ticked as DNS servers and NTP servers set up on the main router will also be dynamically added to the MikroTik router. (You can still manually configure the DNS settings on the routerboard as described in step (Go to IP/DNS)
Select ‘Add default route’ as ‘Yes’. This will add a dynamic route from MikroTik routerboard to the main router. Click ‘Apply’, then OK.
The router now has internet access. Now, use ‘New Terminal’ to check connectivity with the ‘ping’ command.


While you might feel the configuration of Mikrotik router is a bit different than normal home-based routers (TP-Link or D-Link) but it offers multiple options to configure your network as per your desired network architecture.

In this post, I will explain five common configuration mistakes that every Mikrotik routeros user should avoid. These mistakes are so common that you can find at least three of them on 80 percent of all configured Mikrotik routers on the internet.

I have learned over the years that the hardest part of networking is not provioning your routers to connect users to the internet. In fact, it is the easiest. The hardest part lies in securing your routers from external aggressors. Unfortunately, many Mikrotik routeros users pay little or no attention to this part.

Recently, there have been many cases of Mikrotik routers that have been compromised by hacker. I am not surprised by this. If not for anything, it confirms my earlier statement that 80 percent of Mikrotik routers are prone to attacks because the users have failed to avoid these five common mistakes. In addition to these five common mistakes, there are other measures that should be taken to secure your Mikrotik router.

Five common mistakes routerOS users make on Mikrotik routeros

1.  Using a name for username

Many Mikrotik routeros users make the mistake of using names like admin, superadmin, mikrotikadmin, or their given names as username. If your router has a public IP address configured on it, it is highly unadvisable for you to use any of these names as your username. Hackers who attempt bruteforce attacks against network devices using applications like Cain and Abel, will try multiple passwords together with any of these names

Except when authorization is done on a radius server, the Mikrotik routerOS has no limit on failed login attempts (I stand to be corrected on this), Mikrotik routers are usually seen as soft targets for bruteforce attacks. If possible, make your usernames as strong as your passowords. Use a combination of names and special characters to form a username.

2.  Using weak passwords

While everyone understands the danger of using weak passwords, many Mikrotik routeros users still use them simply because they do not want to configure complicated passwords that can be easily forgotten.

The truth is that passwords can be forgotten if they are not in use. Once set on a router, no matter how complicated, constant login on the router ensures it is not forgotten. Using passwords like [email&#;protected], [email&#;protected], [email&#;protected], etc, will not only cause you to be treated like someone who has forgotten the passord to a router, it also ensures that your device is quickly taken over and you, surfer the effect of denial of servce attacks.

Use strong passwords made up of upper and lowercase letters, special characters, etc.

3.  Enabling allow remote dns request

By checking the box to allow remote dns request while setting a dns server IP on the router, you are provioning your router to serve as a dns sever to users on your network. The original intention of Mikrotik concerning this routeros feature is to reduce the dns resolution time for users on your network and as a result, speed up browsing experience.

Unfortunately, enabling allow remote request on a Mikrotik router with a public IP address and with no firewall filter rule(s) to secure the router against external dns requests can ground your network. Your router suddenly becomes a public dns server, receiving hundreds and thousands of dns requests from the internet. The two obvious effects of this mistake are high processor utilzation on your router and high upload traffic on your network.

If you don&#;t want to spend hours troubleshooting the cause of network congestion, enable this feature only when you have a firewall filter rule that drops dns requests coming from the internet on your router.

4.  Using default port numbers

Part of the reasons unauthorized login attempts are successful on most Mikrotik routers is simply because most users do not change the post numbers from their default values. When popular port numbers are changed, it can serve as the first security layer on the router as the attackers will then have to enter the correct port number, say for ssh, to get to the router before login credentials are required.

For example, if the ssh port is changed from 22 to , the first challenge faced by an attacker will be to get the correct port number which obviously is not as simple as ABC. It is only when the correct ssh port number is used that username and password combinations can be done using bruteforce attack. By stopping the attacks from getting to the router, you save your device some processor utilization.

Apart from changing the port numbers, applications that are not needed should have their ports shutdown.

 

5.  Absence of firewall filter rules

Most Mikrotik routeros users don&#;t bother going to the firewall section of the router because they feel it is too complicated. As long as the router can provide internet access to connected users, they are okay. Now hear this, if your router is assigned a public IP address, leaving it without a filter rule is not advisable.

Most small office Mikrotik routers like the RB series come with preconfigured firewall filter rules that protect the router from external aggressors. Unfortunately, most users with limited or no knowledge of what these rules do often times disable them. On MIkrotik routers like the RB series with no preconfigured firewall rules, users should add at least an input-chained firewall filter rule to protect the router from access via the internet. An example is given below.

So if you download an app on your android tablet or on your android phone yes it will now give you a fast it updates the update time unlike apple but unfortunately if you updated it on PI it won't be more, it's going to be about five scans a minute or so, it's really very slow, they seem to be doing the reasoning with battery saving or something to try and improve battery life, but it came up with theNot very good to developers so he googles again and found a site that talks about there being more than one channel on and on five and there is a very strong possibility that you are sharing the same channel as someone else next to you , it must be that I'm on the wrong channel, there are 13 channels he reads in Europe on and it's about 19 of those depends on what country you are in Europe on 5 gigs.

you will have this use it and will use it in the united states if you use the standard configuration of 40 megahertz then there are only seven for image channels i'm not saying they are good but you can choose from seven different 40 megahertz channels and this is the Reason why you will only find seven in the drop down list of frequencies to choose from that it has all the available channels to choose from even if they are dumb because they will end up overlapping if you don't already know that there may well be seven 13 19 or however many channels they are meap the re may be in the scan list but they will all five f megahertz apart.

The Wi-Fi standard stipulates that the channel bandwidth is in increments of 20 instead of 5, and therefore the scan list, which is in five-megahertz increments, cannot be used individually. You can only use each case because they are then 20 megahertz apart and do not overlap. The other thing is that he also didn't realize that he didn't reduce the transmit power to the American standard, which he's running at. So this is what happens if you assume that the default configuration is fine with you If you change it to 20 megahertz channel spacing, not 40, it will now open up using all channels, not only do you get 7, but you can use

Funny because he forgot to change the 40 to 20 settings, he's gone from seven channels to nine now, he's a very slow learner, isn't he? To support it out of the box you have to put a lot of effort into forcing it quite often and the other clever trick with 40 megahertz to gigs is, that the standard is the 11 n standard that gave us 40 megahertz channel spacing and channel bundling at gigs the standard says that this scanning feature is built into the wi-fi device stating that if you see someone out there using a 20 megahertz channel it drops back to 20 megahertz so it doesn't cause interference so you can have an access point running at 40 megahertz but if they see a client on the same channel enters the building, it doesn't need to be connected, it just needs to see its beacons, or its probes only need to see transmissions from that device, and when it does, it sees that the settings on that device are just a 20 megahertz channel , which it transmits at the 40 megahertz automatically drops to

It's called an intolerant bit or 40 megahertz intolerant bit 20 megabytes it's going to drop anyway and fall back to 20, so we still have the black hole problem, w what he's going to do with his black holes who hopefully he'll call us at some point because it will save him a tremendous amount of time but he talks to Dave and Mike takes Dave's advice and he says all your problems will be solved when You enter the country in the regulatory domain where you don't want B so just select G and then just plug in the antenna ga If you only enter the three frequencies available on you can also enable WMM quality support and turn off that vulnerability with WPS while you're at it.

# Bridge Configuration

To use this binding you need at least one RouterOS-powered device (Bridge) accessible to the host running openHAB via network. Make sure your RouterOS has the API enabled by visiting (opens new window) configuration section in WinBox(opens new window). Take note of the API port number as you'll need it below. SSL API connection(opens new window) is not yet supported by this binding. To connect to the RouterOS API, you will need to provide user credentials for the bridge thing. You may use your current credentials that you use to manage your devices, but it is highly recommended to create a read-only RouterOS user since this binding only need to read data from the device. To do this, proceed to configuration section and add a user to the group.

    In this post, I will explain five common configuration mistakes that every Mikrotik routeros user should avoid. These mistakes are so common that you mikrotik wi-fi errors find at least three of them on 80 percent of all configured Mikrotik routers on the internet.

    I have learned over the years that the hardest part of networking is not provioning your routers to connect users to the internet. In fact, it is the easiest.     1.  Using a name for username

    Many Mikrotik routeros users make the mistake of using names like admin, superadmin, mikrotikadmin, or their given names as username. If your router has a public IP address configured on it, it is highly unadvisable for you to use any of these names as your username. Hackers who attempt bruteforce attacks against network devices using applications like Cain and Abel, will try multiple passwords together with any of these names

    Except when authorization is done on a radius server, the Mikrotik routerOS has no limit on failed login attempts (I stand to be corrected on this), Mikrotik routers are usually seen as soft targets for bruteforce attacks. If possible, make your usernames as strong as your passowords. Use a combination of names and special characters to form a username.

    2.  Using weak passwords

    While everyone understands the danger of using weak passwords, many Mikrotik routeros users still use them simply because they do not want to configure complicated passwords that can be easily forgotten.

    The truth is that passwords can be forgotten if they are not in use. Once set on a router, no matter how complicated, constant login on the router ensures it is not forgotten. Using passwords like [email&#;protected], [email&#;protected], [email&#;protected], etc, will not only cause you to be treated like someone who has forgotten the passord to a router, mikrotik wi-fi errors, it also ensures that your device is quickly taken over and you, surfer the effect of denial of servce attacks.

The two obvious effects of this mistake are high processor utilzation on your router and high upload traffic on your network.

    If you don&#;t want to spend hours troubleshooting the cause of network congestion, mikrotik wi-fi errors, enable this feature only when you have a firewall filter rule that drops dns requests coming from the internet on your router.

    4.  Using default port numbers

    This binding integrates Mikrotik(opens new window)RouterOS(opens new window)devices(opens new window) allowing monitoring of system resources, network interfaces and WiFi clients.

    # Supported Things

    • mikrotik wi-fi errors An instance of the RouterOS device connection
    • - A network interface inside RouterOS device
    • - Any wireless client connected to a RouterOS wireless network (regular or CAPsMAN-managed)

    Discovery is currently not supported, but may be implemented in future versions.

    # Bridge Configuration

    To use this binding you need at least one RouterOS-powered device (Bridge) accessible to the host running openHAB via network. Make sure your RouterOS has the API enabled by visiting (opens new window) configuration section in WinBox(opens new window). Take note of the API port number as you'll need it below. SSL API connection(opens new window) is not yet supported by this binding. To connect to the RouterOS API, you will need to provide user credentials for the bridge thing. You may use your current credentials that you use to manage your devices, mikrotik wi-fi errors, but it is highly recommended to create a read-only RouterOS user since this binding only need to read data from the device.
