Who’s not familiar with this issue? I mean we all had a problem like that in the past but we’d usually ignore it and just press the F1 key and move on, it’s not a critical issue and we can all live without resolving it but some people just choose not to live with such an irritating problem.

In this post, I’m going to walk you through multiple solutions to resolve this issue.

Change BIOS settings

You can simply choose not to see this option ever again by changing the BIOS settings, here’s how to do it:

On the boot screen, you should press a key that’ll allow you to enter the BIOS settings, this key may be the Del key or any other key depending on your motherboard’s type, it’s right at the bottom, once you’re in go to the Boot tab then choose Boot Settings Configuration, you’ll see an option that says Wait for F1 if error, go ahead and set it to Disabled and that’s it you’re finished, easy, right? Keep in mind that the steps may vary from a person to another depending on you’re motherboard’s type like I said above but the concept is the same.

Restore the default settings:

If you played around with the settings right before this issue showed up then this might be the cause, reset your BIOS settings and see if it works.

You can do that by reseating the CMOS battery or by simply going to the Exit tab and choosing Load Default Settings then it’ll ask to save the settings and reboot.

Disable the Floppy Disk:

If you don’t have a floppy disk drive then it’s recommended to disable it, especially when no one still uses it.

On the Main tab choose Legacy Diskette A then set it to Disabled, save the settings and exit.

Update the BIOS

Update or reflash the BIOS to the latest version by going to the motherboard’s manufacturer’s official site, follow the instructions provided by their site and be careful when you are doing this.

It’s not a common for a normal user to update the BIOS version, so it needs to be done carefully and choose the perfect time for updating the BIOS when there won’t be any chance for power cuts, so try to be careful and watch a many tutorials as possible on how to do this properly.

Replace CMOS battery

The CMOS battery is a small, circular shaped battery that is found on the motherboard of your computer. It backs up system settings for CMOS which are used to configure your laptop’s BIOS or boot sequence. The CMOS battery stores information related to your computer’s operating system, hardware settings, passwords, time and date information. It also stores information about your computer’s hardware configuration so it can keep track of how much memory you have installed in the computer.

After a while your CMOS battery may cause problems like this one, go ahead and reseat it or replace it with a new one, also consider that by reseating the CMOS battery you’re also resetting the BIOS settings.

Did you know that all CMOS Batteries will lose power? The CMOS Battery will lose power unless it is periodically refreshed. A new CMOS Battery can provide up to 10 years or more of life, depending on the age and type of battery.

Note: The CMOS battery is that silver rounded coin-like piece that’s mounted on your motherboard.

Check for hardware problems

This problem usually occurs because you have a failed hardware, read the message carefully to see what’s wrong and try to fix it.

This chapter describes how to prepare the server for servicing.

2.1 Safety Information

This section describes important safety information that you need to know prior to removing or installing parts in the Sun Fire X4170 M2 Server.

For your protection, observe the following safety precautions when setting up your equipment:

  • Follow all cautions, warnings, and instructions marked on the equipment and described in the Important Safety Information for Sun Hardware Systems (821-1590).
  • Follow all cautions, warnings, and instructions marked on the equipment and described in the Sun Fire X4170 M2 and X4270 M2 Servers Safety and Compliance Guide (821-0490).
  • Ensure that the voltage and frequency of your power source match the voltage and frequency inscribed on the equipment’s electrical rating label.
  • Follow the electrostatic discharge safety practices as described in this chapter.

2.2 Required Tools

The Sun Fire X4170 M2 Server can be serviced with the following tools:

  • Antistatic wrist strap
  • Antistatic mat
  • 4mm Hex wrench
  • No. 2 Phillips screwdriver
  • Straight-edge screwdriver
  • Stylus or pencil (to power the server on and off and press the CLEAR CMOS button)

2.3 Obtaining the Chassis Serial Number

To obtain support for your server, you need your chassis serial number. The chassis serial number is located on a sticker on the front of the server and on another sticker on the top of the server.

2.4 Powering On and Off the Server

Refer to the following topics in this section to power on and off a server:

2.4.1 Power On the Server



Note - The following procedure assumes that at least one power cord is connected to the server and power is being supplied to the server’s power supply, and that the server has been previously powered on according to the installation instructions in the Sun Fire X4170 M2 and X4270 M2 Servers Installation Guide.


1. Verify that the server is in the standby power state.

In the standby power state, the Power/OK LED on the front panel of the server blinks (0.1 second on, 2.9 seconds off). The standby power state indicates that the server SP is active but the server host is powered off.

For the location of the Power/OK LED, see FIGURE 1-1.

2. Apply full power to the server SP and host.

For example:

  • Local server power-on. Press and release the recessed Power button on the front panel of the server.

For the location of the Power button on the server, see FIGURE 1-1.

  • ILOM SP web interface power-on. Log in to the ILOM web interface for the server SP and select: , then select from the Select Action list box.
  • ILOM SP CLI power on. Log in to the SP ILOM CLI and type:

The Power/OK LED illuminates a SLOW BLINK while the system is executing its BIOS firmware. The Power/OK LED illuminates STEADY ON when the BIOS firmware completes and the operating system boot begins.

2.4.2 Power Off the Server

To remove main power from the server, use one of the methods shown in the following table.

Press and release the Power button on the front panel (FIGURE 1-1). Pressing the power button causes Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)-enabled operating systems to perform an orderly shutdown of the operating system. Servers not running ACPI-enabled operating systems will shut down to standby power mode immediately.

Note - Some operating systems might prompt the user for confirmation of the shutdown before actually turning off the system.

Emergency shutdown

Press and hold the Power button for at least five seconds until the main power is off and the server enters standby power mode (FIGURE 1-1).

 


Caution -

All applications and files will be closed abruptly without saving changes. File system corruption might occur.

2.4.3 Power Off the Server Using the ILOM SP Command-Line Interface

You can use the ILOM service processor (SP) to perform a graceful shutdown of the server and ensure that all of your data is saved and the server is ready for restart.

1. Log in as root. Type:

host (Where host is either a hostname, when using DNS, or an ipaddress.)

Password: root_password (The default password is .)

The ILOM command-line interface (CLI) prompt appears ().

Depending on the type of problem, you might want to view server status or log files, or run diagnostics before you shut down the server.

2. Notify affected users that the server will be shut down.

3. Save any open files and quit all running programs.

Refer to your application documentation for specific information.

4. Power down the server. Type:

(for a Graceful shutdown as defined in TABLE 2-1)

(for an Emergency Shut as defined in TABLE 2-1)

2.5 About the BIOS

The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) has a Setup Utility stored in the BIOS flash memory. The Setup Utility reports system information and can be used to configure the BIOS settings. The configurable data is provided with context-sensitive help and is stored in the system's battery-backed CMOS RAM. If the configuration stored in the CMOS RAM is invalid, the BIOS settings return to their default optimal values.

There are seven menus in the BIOS Setup Utility, which appear in this order: Main, Advanced, PCI, Boot, Security, Chipset, and Exit. To navigate the menus or options listed on the menu, use the arrow keys. The options or fields that you can configure on a menu appear in color. For further instructions on how to navigate and change settings in the BIOS Setup Utility, refer to the online instructions provided on the menu.

For additional information about the BIOS operations and menu options available on your server, refer to the following sections:

2.5.1 BIOS Booting and Setup Considerations

2.5.1.1 Default BIOS Power-On Self-Test (POST) Events

At system startup, the BIOS performs a power-on self-test that checks the hardware on your server to ensure that all components are present and functioning properly. TABLE 2-2 identifies the events that can occur during BIOS POST, as well as specifies whether these events can prevent the host from powering-on.

2.5.1.2 BIOS POST F1 and F2 Errors

Each power-on-self-test (POST) diagnostic is a low-level test designed to pinpoint faults in a specific hardware component. If the POST diagnostic discloses an F1 or F2 error, it typically reports the following information about the error:

  • Type of error detected
  • When or where the error occurred

TABLE 2-3 lists some of the F1 and F2 error messages that could appear during the POST diagnostics along with instructions for how to possibly resolve the error reported.

2.5.1.3 How BIOS POST Memory Testing Works

The BIOS POST memory testing is performed as follows:

1. The first megabyte of DRAM is tested by the BIOS before the BIOS code is copied from ROM to DRAM.

2. After exiting out of DRAM, the BIOS performs a simple memory test (where a write/read of every location with the pattern 55aa55aa is performed).



Note - The simple memory test is performed only if Quick Boot is not enabled from the Boot Settings Configuration screen. Enabling Quick Boot causes the BIOS to skip the memory test.


3. The BIOS polls the memory controllers for both correctable and non-correctable memory errors and logs those errors into the SP.

4. The message, BMC Responding, appears at the end of POST.

2.5.1.4 Ethernet Port Device and Driver Naming

The server supports four 10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet ports on the rear of the chassis. For port locations, see FIGURE 1-2.

The device naming for the Ethernet interfaces is reported differently by different interfaces and operating systems. See TABLE 2-4 for the physical (BIOS) and logical (operating system) naming conventions used for each interface.

2.5.1.5 Ethernet Port Booting Priority

The order in which the BIOS detects the Ethernet ports during boot time, and the corresponding drivers that control those ports, are listed below:

1. NET 0 (INTEL NIC 0)

2. NET 1 (INTEL NIC 1)

3. NET 2 (INTEL NIC 2)

4. NET 3 (INTEL NIC 3)

2.5.1.6 Hardware Prefetchers

Hardware prefetchers work well in workloads that traverse array and other regular data structures. The hardware prefetcher option is disabled by default and should be disabled when running applications that perform aggressive software prefetching or for workloads with limited cache. For example, memory-intensive applications with high bus utilization could see a performance degradation if hardware prefetching is enabled.

2.5.2 BIOS Setup Utility Menus

TABLE 2-5 provides descriptions for the seven top-level BIOS setup menus.

2.5.4 Accessing the BIOS Setup Utility Menus

You can access BIOS Setup Utility screens from the following interfaces:

  • Use a USB keyboard, mouse, and VGA monitor connected directly to the server.
  • Use a terminal (or terminal emulator connected to a computer) through the serial port on the back panel of the server.
  • Connect to the server using the ILOM Remote Console.

The following procedure describes the steps for accessing the BIOS Setup Utility menus.

2.5.4.1 Access BIOS Setup Utility Menus

1. Power-on or power-cycle the server.

The Boot Option screen appears (FIGURE 2-2).

2. To enter the BIOS Setup Utility, do the following:

a. Wait for the last line of the screen output to change to

Note - If there is an error during the boot process, you can press to access the BIOS Setup Utility.

3. Use the left and right arrow keys to select the different menu options.

4. As you select each menu option, the top-level screen for that menu option appears.

5. To select an option on a top-level screen, use the up and down arrow keys to scroll up and down the options presented.

Only options that can be modified are highlighted when you press the up and down arrow keys.

  • If a field can be modified, as you select the option, user instructions for modifying the option appear in the right column of the screen.
  • If a field is a link to a sub-screen, an instruction to press the Enter key to access the sub-screen appears in the right column.

6. Modify the setup field and press the Esc key to save the changes and exit the screen.

Some screens present a confirmation dialog box that enables unwanted changes to be retracted.

7. On sub-screens that only provide configuration information and cannot be modified, press the Esc key to exit the screen.

8. To continue modifying other setup parameters, repeat Step 3 through Step 7. Otherwise, go to Step 9.

9. Press and release the right arrow key until the Exit menu screen appears.

10. Follow the instructions on the Exit menu screen to save or discard your changes and exit the BIOS Setup Utility.

2.5.5 Configuring Support for TPM

If you intend to use the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) feature set that is provided in Windows 2008, you must configure the server to support this feature.

TPM enables you to administer the TPM security hardware in your server. For additional information about implementing this feature, refer to the Windows Trusted Platform Module Management documentation provided by Microsoft.

2.5.5.1 Configure TPM Support in BIOS

1. Access the BIOS Setup Utility menus.

For instructions, see Access BIOS Setup Utility Menus.

When BIOS is started, the main BIOS Setup Utility top-level System Overview screen appears (FIGURE 2-4).

2. In the BIOS Setup Utility screen, select the Advanced menu option.

The Advanced Settings screen appears (FIGURE 2-5).

3. In the Advanced Settings screen, select Trusted Computing and press Enter.

4. In the Trusted Computing screen, select the TCG/TPM Support.

A pop-up dialog box appears.

5. In the pop-up dialog box, set the TCG/TPM Support option to Yes and click Ok.



Note - Even if the TCG/TPM Support was already set to in the dialog shown above, continue on and complete the remaining steps of this procedure to ensure that all TPM configuration requirements are satisfied.


The updated Trusted Computing dialog appears and shows that the TCG/TPM Support setting has changed to Yes (FIGURE 2-7).

6. In the Trusted Computing screen, select the Execute TPM Command option setting.

A pop-up dialog box appears.

7. In the pop-up dialog box, set the Execute TPM Command option to Enabled and click Ok.

The updated Trusted Computing screen appears and shows that the Execute TPM Command setting has changed to (FIGURE 2-8).

8. Press F10 to save the changes and exit BIOS.

9. To verify that TPM support is configured, do the following:

a. Reboot the server.

b. To enter the BIOS Setup Utility, press the F2 key while the system is performing the power-on self-test (POST).

When BIOS is started, the main BIOS Setup utility top-level screen appears (FIGURE 2-4).

c. Select Advanced --> Trusted Computing and press Enter.

The updated Trusted Computing screen appears (FIGURE 2-9).

Confirm that the TCG/TPM Support setting is set to and the TPM Enabled/Disable Status is set to .

10. Press F10 to exit BIOS.

This completes the TPM configuration.

2.5.6 Configuring SP LAN Settings

You can assign an IP address for the server SP from the BIOS Setup Utility on the IPMI LAN configuration menu. Alternatively, you can also specify the LAN settings for the SP using ILOM. For instructions for setting the IP address in ILOM, see the ILOM Documentation Collection.

For instructions on configuring SP LAN settings using the BIOS Setup Utility, see the following sections:

2.5.6.1 Configure LAN Settings for SP

1. Access the BIOS Setup Utility menus.

For instructions, see Access BIOS Setup Utility Menus.

2. In the BIOS Setup Utility menus, use the arrow keys (or Tab key) to navigate to the Advanced menu.

3. In the Advanced menu, select IPMI Configuration.

4. In the IPMI Configuration menu, select LAN Confutation.

The LAN Configuration screen appears (FIGURE 2-10).

5. In the LAN Configuration screen, use the arrow keys to select and specify the appropriate LAN configuration settings.

6. Press F10 to save the changes and exit BIOS.

2.5.6.2 Viewing or Setting the ILOM SP IP Address Using the BIOS Setup Utility

1. Power on the server (or restart the server if it is running).

2. When the BIOS splash screen or text prompt appears during the power-on self-test (POST) operation, press F2 to access the BIOS Setup Utility.

3. Using the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard, navigate to the Advanced tab.

The Advanced Settings screen appears (FIGURE 2-5).

4. Using the up and down arrow keys, select the option and press Enter to go to the subscreen.

The IPMI Configuration subscreen appears.

5. Using the up and down arrow keys, select the option and press Enter.

The LAN Configuration subscreen appears and shows the current ILOM SP IP address.

6. To set the IP address:

a. Select , then use the arrow keys to select settings.

b. Specify the appropriate settings, then proceed to Step 7.

7. Select and press Enter.

8. Allow about five seconds for the Commit to complete, then select and press Enter.

9. Select a second time and press Enter to confirm that the IP address information has been set.

10. Press F10 to save any changes you made and to exit the BIOS Setup Utility.

2.5.7 Configuring Option ROM Settings in BIOS

The BIOS Option ROM is 128 Kbytes. Of these 128 Kbytes, approximately 80 Kbytes are used by the VGA controller, the disk controller, and the network interface card. Approximately 48 Kbytes remain to be shared by the Option ROMs on all bootable PCI-Express plug-in cards.

2.5.7.1 Enable or Disable Option ROM Settings

1. Access the BIOS Setup Utility menus.

For instructions, see Access BIOS Setup Utility Menus.

2. In the BIOS Setup Utility menus, use the arrow keys (or Tab key) to navigate to the Boot menu.

The Boot menu appears (FIGURE 2-11).

3. In the Boot menu listing the Option ROM settings, highlight the applicable Option ROM setting to modify, then press Enter.

  • Select to enable the Option ROM setting.
  • Select to disable the Option ROM setting.

5. Press F10 to save the changes and exit BIOS.

2.5.8 Updating the BIOS Firmware

The BIOS firmware is updated whenever you update the ILOM SP firmware. For instructions about updating the firmware, refer to the ILOM Documentation Collection.

2.6 Extending the Server to the Maintenance Position

The following components can be serviced with the server in the maintenance position:

  • Storage drives
  • Fan modules
  • Power supplies
  • DVD/USB module
  • Fan board
  • DDR3 DIMMs
  • PCIe Risers
  • PCIe cards
  • Motherboard battery

If the server is installed in a rack with extendable slide rails, use this procedure to extend the server to the maintenance position.

2.6.1 Extend Server to the Maintenance Position

1. Verify that no cables will be damaged or will interfere when the server is extended.

Although the cable management arm (CMA) that is supplied with the server is hinged to accommodate extending the server, you should ensure that all cables and cords are capable of extending.

2. From the front of the server, release the two slide release latches (FIGURE 2-12).

Squeeze the green slide release latches to release the slide rails.

3. While squeezing the slide release latches, slowly pull the server forward until the slide rails latch.

The server is now in the extended maintenance position.

2.7 Removing the Server From the Rack

The server must be removed from the rack to service the following components:

  • Motherboard
  • CPUs
  • Power distribution board
  • Paddle board
  • Storage drive cage
  • Disk backplane
  • Front panel light-pipe assemblies

2.7.1 Remove Server From the Rack



caution iconCaution - The server weighs 36 lb (16.36 kg). If necessary, use two people to dismount and carry the chassis.


1. Disconnect all the cables and power cords from the server.

2. Extend the server to the maintenance position.

See Extend Server to the Maintenance Position.

3. Press the metal lever that is located on the inner side of the rail to disconnect the cable management arm (CMA) from the rail assembly (FIGURE 2-13).

The CMA is still attached to the cabinet, but the server chassis is now disconnected from the CMA.

4. From the front of the server, pull the release tabs forward and pull the server forward until it is free of the rack rails (FIGURE 2-14).

5. Set the server on a sturdy work surface.

2.8 Using Server Filler Panels

Each server is shipped with module-replacement filler panels for CPUs, storage drives, DDR3 memory modules (DDR3 DIMMs), PCIe cards, and power supplies. These filler panels are installed at the factory and must remain in the server until you replace them with a purchased option.

As needed, consult the following sections when removing and replacing a server component:

2.8.1 Filler Panel Purpose

A filler panel is an empty metal or plastic enclosure that does not contain any functioning system hardware or cable connectors. These panels must remain in any unused module slots (CPU, storage drives, DDR3 DIMMs, PCIe cards, power supplies) to ensure proper airflow throughout the system. If you remove a filler panel and continue to operate your system with an empty module slot, the operating performance of your system could decline.

2.8.2 Filler Panel Removal and Installation

Before you can install a optional server component into the server, you must remove the filler panel from the location into which you intend to install the component. When you remove a CPU, storage drive, DDR3 DIMM, PCIe card, or a power supply from the server, you must install either a replacement for component removed or a filler panel.

TABLE 2-7 describes how to remove and install server filler panels.

  1. Locate the DDR3 DIMM filler panel to be removed from the motherboard.
  2. Simultaneously press down on both ejector levers at the ends of the memory module slot.
  3. Lift the filler panel straight up to remove it from the memory module socket.
  1. Locate the vacant DDR3 DIMM slot on the motherboard.
  2. Ensure that ejector levers at both ends of the DDR3 DIMM slot are in a fully opened position.
  3. Align the filler panel with the empty slot, then gently press the filler panel into the slot until both ejector levers close, locking the filler panel in place.

CPU

Note - CPUs should only be removed or installed by Oracle qualified service personnel.

  1. To remove the CPU filler panel in the socket, pull the release lever away from the socket into a fully opened position.
  2. Lift the bail and then gently lift the filler panel straight up and out of the CPU socket.
  1. Ensure that the CPU socket release lever and bail are in a fully opened position.
  2. Gently insert the filler panel onto the exposed pins in the CPU socket.
  3. After the filler panel is fully seated in the socket, close the bail onto the top of the filler panel, then pivot the release lever down and into the locked position at the side of the socket.

Storage Drive

  1. Locate the disk drive filler panel to be removed from the server.
  2. To unlatch the disk drive filler panel, press the release lever button then tilt the lever up into a fully opened position.
  3. To remove the filler panel from the slot, hold the opened release lever and gently slide the filler panel toward you.
  1. Locate the vacant disk drive module slot in the server, then ensure that the release lever on the filler panel is fully opened.
  2. Slide the filler panel into the vacant slot by pressing the middle of the filler panel faceplate with your thumb or finger.

The release lever will lower as it makes contact with the chassis.Do not slide the filler panel in all the way. Leave the filler panel out approximately 0.25 to 0.50 inch (6 to 12 mm) from the opening

  1. Using your thumb or finger, press on the middle of the filler panel faceplate until the release lever engages with the chassis.
  2. Close the release lever until it clicks into place and is flush with the front of the server.

PCI Slot

  1. Remove the server top cover.
  2. Remove the PCI slot filler panel from the location into which you intend to install the PCIe card.
  1. Remove the server top cover.
  2. Press the PCI filler panel into the vacant PCI slot.

Power supply

  1. To release the filler panel side latches, use your fingers to press and hold both sides of the filler panel away from the sides of the power supply bay.
  2. Using fingers on your other hand, grasp the lip at the bottom of the filler panel and pull it out of the power supply bay.
  1. Position the filler panel in the power supply bay so that the closed end is facing inward and the lip that is used to remove the filler panel is in the bottom position.
  2. Press the filler panel into the power supply bay until it is flush with the power supply bay.

2.9 Performing Electrostatic Discharge and Antistatic Prevention Measures

2.9.1 Electrostatic Discharge Safety Measures

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitive devices, such as the motherboards, PCIe cards, storage drives, and memory cards, require special handling.



caution iconCaution - Circuit boards and storage drives contain electronic components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards and drives. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.

2.9.1.1 Using an Antistatic Wrist Strap

Wear an antistatic wrist strap and use an antistatic mat when handling components such as storage drive assemblies, circuit boards, or PCIe cards. When servicing or removing server components, attach an antistatic strap to your wrist and then to a metal area on the chassis. Following this practice equalizes the electrical potentials between you and the server.



Note - An antistatic wrist strap is not included in the Accessory Kit for the Sun Fire X4170 M2 Server. However, antistatic wrist straps are still included with options and components.


2.9.1.2 Using an Antistatic Mat

Place ESD-sensitive components on an antistatic mat.

2.9.2 Using ESD Handling Precautions

1. Prepare an antistatic surface to set parts on during the removal, installation, or replacement process.

Place ESD-sensitive components such as the printed circuit boards on an antistatic mat. The following items can be used as an antistatic mat:

    • Antistatic bag used to wrap an Oracle replacement part
    • Oracle ESD mat, part number 250-1088
    • A disposable ESD mat (shipped with some replacement parts or optional system components)

2. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.

When servicing or removing server components, attach an antistatic strap to your wrist and then to a metal area on the chassis.

2.10 Removing the Top Cover

The top cover and fan door are integrated.



caution iconCaution - If the top cover is removed without first removing the AC power cords, then not only will the server host shut down, but also this condition will be flagged as a system fault (that is, the fault LEDs will light). In this situation, the SP will need to be power-cycled (remove/reinsert AC power cords) before the server can be properly returned to service.




Note - Servicing some components requires that the top cover be removed.


2.10.1 Remove Top Cover

1. Ensure that the AC power cords are disconnected from the server power supplies.

2. Unlatch the fan module door (FIGURE 2-15 [1]).

Pull the two release tabs back to release the door. Rotate the fan door to the open position and hold it there.

3. Press the top cover release button and slide the top cover toward the rear of the server about a 0.5 inches (12.7 mm) [2].

4. Lift up and remove the top cover [3].

 


Keyboards

A physical keyboard can be an essential input device for entering text, navigating, performing actions, and more.

On a Mac, some people prefer using a keyboard instead of a mouse or a trackpad, and VoiceOver users require it. People can also connect an external keyboard to their iPhone, iPad, or TV.

When a physical keyboard is available, people often rely on keyboard shortcuts, which offer efficient ways to initiate actions without using a mouse or trackpad to navigate a menu or click a button.

Best practices

Support keyboard-only interaction where possible. As the name suggests, full keyboard-access mode lets people navigate and activate windows, menus, controls, and system features using only the keyboard. To learn more, see Navigate your app using Full Keyboard Access and Adjust the onscreen and external keyboard settings on iPad. In iPadOS, you can enhance the experience of using a connected keyboard with your app by customizing visual effects that help people focus on individual items as they navigate your interface. For guidance, see Keyboard navigation on iPad.

Keyboard shortcuts

Most keyboard shortcuts consist of a combination of keys: a single primary key and one or more of the modifier keys (Command, Shift, Control, and Option). A rare exception is the Esc (Escape) key, which people can use as a shortcut to invoke a cancel action in various contexts.

People discover keyboard shortcuts in a couple of ways. For example, a macOS app lists its keyboard shortcuts in its menu bar menus (to learn more, see The menu bar).

The keyboard shortcuts in an iPadOS app appear in the shortcut interface that displays when people hold the Command key on a connected keyboard. Similar in organization to an app’s menu bar menus on a Mac, the shortcut interface on iPad displays app commands in familiar system-defined menu categories such as File, Edit, and View. Unlike menu bar menus, the iPad interface displays all relevant categories in one view, listing within each category only available commands that also have shortcuts.

Respect standard keyboard shortcuts. People expect the standard keyboard shortcuts to work, regardless of the app they’re using. You can also help people learn your app quickly by supporting the system-defined keyboard shortcuts that make sense in your app.

In general, don’t repurpose standard keyboard shortcuts for custom actions. People can get confused when the shortcuts they know work differently in your app. Only consider redefining a standard shortcut if its action doesn’t make sense in your app. For example, an app that doesn’t support text editing doesn’t need a text-styling command like Italic, so it might use Command–I for an action that has more relevance in the app, such as Get Info.

Define custom keyboard shortcuts for only the most common actions in your app. People appreciate using keyboard shortcuts for app-specific actions they perform frequently, but defining too many new shortcuts risks making your app seem difficult to learn and can clutter the shortcut interface in an iPadOS app. Minimizing app-specific keyboard shortcuts also helps avoid potential conflicts with system-defined shortcuts that may be in place.

Let people use modifier and other keys to adjust the behavior of some interactions. For example, pressing Command while dragging moves items as a group, and pressing Shift while drag-resizing constrains resizing to the item’s aspect ratio. In addition, holding an arrow key moves the selected item by the smallest app-defined unit of distance until people release the key.

Custom keyboard shortcuts

It’s important for custom keyboard shortcuts to use modifier keys in ways that people expect.

Here are the modifier keys and the symbols that represent them.

Prefer the Command key as the main modifier key in a custom keyboard shortcut. Most standard keyboard shortcuts use the Command key, so people are familiar with it.

Prefer the Shift key as a secondary modifier when the shortcut complements another shortcut. For example, Command-P displays the Print dialog in most apps. The standard shortcut for the Page Setup dialog, which complements printing, is typically Shift-Command-P.

Use the Option modifier sparingly. For example, you might use Option in the shortcut for a less-common command or a convenience or power feature. For example, the Finder uses Option-Command-W for Close All Windows and Option-Command-M for Minimize All Windows.

As much as possible, avoid using the Control key as a modifier. The system uses Control in many systemwide features, like moving focus or capturing screenshots.

Avoid creating a new shortcut by adding a modifier to an existing shortcut for an unrelated command. For example, because people are accustomed to using Command-Z for undoing an action, it would be confusing to use Shift-Command-Z as the shortcut for a command that’s unrelated to undo and redo.

List modifier keys in the correct order. If you use more than one modifier key in a custom shortcut, always list them in this order: Control, Option, Shift, Command.

Identify a two-character key by its lower character unless Shift is part of the shortcut. For example, the keyboard shortcut for Hide Status Bar is Command-Slash (/). If the Shift key is part of the keyboard shortcut, identify the key using the upper of the two characters. For example, the keyboard shortcut for Help is Command-Question Mark (?), not Shift-Command-Slash.

TIP Some languages require modifier keys to generate certain characters. For example, on a French keyboard, Option-5 generates the “{“ character. It’s usually safe to use the Command key as a modifier, but avoid using an additional modifier with characters that aren’t available on all keyboards. If you must use a modifier other than Command, prefer using it only with the alphabetic characters.

Let the system localize and mirror your keyboard shortcuts as needed. For example, iPadOS automatically localizes a shortcut’s primary key and modifier keys to support the currently connected keyboard. Also, if your app switches to a right-to-left layout, the system automatically mirrors the shortcut. For guidance, see Right to left.

No additional considerations for iOS, macOS, or tvOS. Not supported in watchOS.

iPadOS

Help people discover available actions in your iPadOS app. Because the iPad shortcut interface displays a flat list of all items in each category, submenu titles aren’t available to provide context for their child items. For example, the item titles Name and Date Added don’t make sense without the context of the submenu title Sort Bookmarks By. You can enhance each item’s title by including the necessary context, such as Sort Bookmarks by Name and Sort Bookmarks by Date Added. For developer guidance, see discoverabilityTitle.

Keyboard navigation on iPad

By default, iPadOS 15 and later enables keyboard navigation in text fields, text views, and sidebars, providing APIs you can use to enable it in various types of collection views and other custom views in your app. For developer guidance, see Focus-based navigation.

IMPORTANT Avoid enabling keyboard navigation for controls, such as buttons, segmented controls, and switches. Full keyboard-access mode already helps people activate controls, navigate to all onscreen components, and even perform gesture-based interactions like drag and drop.

The iPadOS and tvOS focus systems are similar. People perform actions by moving a focus indicator to an item and then selecting it (for guidance, see Focus and selection). Although the underlying system is the same, the user experiences are a little different. tvOS uses directional focus, which means that people can use the same interaction — that is, swiping the Siri Remote or using only the arrow keys on a connected keyboard — to navigate to every onscreen component. In contrast, iPadOS defines focus groups, which represent specific areas within an app, like a sidebar, grid, or list. Using focus groups, iPadOS can support two different keyboard interactions.

  • Pressing the Tab key moves focus among focus groups, letting people navigate to sidebars, grids, and other app areas.
  • Pressing an arrow key enables a directional focus interaction that’s similar to tvOS, but limited to navigation among items in the same focus group. For example, people can use an arrow key to move through the items in a list or a sidebar.

Onscreen components can indicate focus by using the halo effect or the highlighted appearance.

The halo focus effect — also known as the focus ring — displays a customizable outline around the component. You can apply the halo effect to custom views and to fully opaque content within a collection or list cell, such as an image.

Customize the halo focus effect when necessary. By default, the system uses an item’s shape to infer the shape of its halo. If the system-provided halo doesn’t give you the appearance you want, you can refine it to match contours like rounded corners or shapes defined by Bézier paths. You can also adjust a halo’s position if another component occludes or clips it. For example, you might need to ensure that a badge appears above the halo or that a parent view doesn’t clip it. For developer guidance, see UIFocusHaloEffect.

The highlighted appearance — in which the component’s background uses the app’s accent color — also indicates focus, but it’s not a focus effect. The highlight appearance occurs automatically when people select a collection view cell on which you’ve set background and content configurations (for developer guidance, see UICollectionViewCell).

Ensure that focus moves through your custom views in ways that make sense. As people continue pressing the Tab key, focus moves through focus groups in reading order: leading to trailing, and top to bottom. Although focus moves through system-provided views in ways that people expect, you might need to adjust the order in which the focus system visits your custom views. For example, if you want focus to move down through a vertical stack of custom views before it moves in the trailing direction to the next view, you need to identify the stack container as a single focus group. For developer guidance, see focusGroupIdentifier.

Adjust the priority of an item to reflect its importance within a focus group. When a group receives focus, its primary item automatically receives focus too, making it easy for people to select the item they’re most likely to want. You can make an item primary by increasing its priority. For developer guidance, see UIFocusGroupPriority.

Symptoms

Hotkeys or the volume control keys do not work as expected on your Microsoft keyboard. Some hotkeys may behave as expected, but others do not.

You may receive an error message that resembles the following message when you try to start the Human Interface Service:

Cause

This issue may occur if there is a problem with the USB connection on your computer. This issue can also occur if a third-party keyboard control utility is running on your computer. Examples of third-party keyboard control utilities are as follows:

  • Compaq Easy Access

  • E-machine's E-Board

  • Gateway MultiFunction Keyboard

  • Hewlett-Packard Multimedia Keyboard Utility

  • IBM Rapid Access •Logitech Key Commander

  • Packard Bell MediaSelect

Third-party keyboard control utilities are also provided with Acer, Gateway 2000, and Sony Multimedia computers.



This issue occurs because the scan codes issued by the keyboard are interpreted differently by each keyboard control utility. This can also be due to having unexpected default or re-defined program assignments for the keys. Many of the default assignments require that you have a specific program installed, or that you are using a supported e-mail program, Internet browser or media player.



If you do not have the supported program you can still use the key by reassigning the key.

Resolution

Try each of the Methods below in order, testing the keys after each method. Proceed to the next method if the problem still occurs.

Method 1: Try a different USB Port

Connect the keyboard to a different USB port, and then check the behavior of the keyboard. (This method tests for port-specific issues.)

Note Bypass any port replicators, USB hubs, KVM switches, and so on. Connect the receiver directly to a port on the computer.

Method 2: Disable or uninstall any previously installed keyboard software

Disable any other keyboard control software installed on this computer and then try reassigning the keys.

If the problem persists, remove any keyboard software on your computer. To uninstall any IntelliPoint, Logitech, or other keyboard software, follow these steps:

  1. Do one of the following things:

    • Windows Vista or Windows 7:

      1. Use the ARROW keys to locate the Start Search box, type appwiz.cpl, and then press ENTER.

      2. In the list of programs, use the ARROW keys to select Programs and Features, and then press ENTER.

      3. Use the ARROW keys to locate any keyboard controlling software, press TAB to locate Remove, and then press ENTER. If you have other mouse software installed, you may want to consider uninstalling that software also.

    • Windows XP and earlier versions of Windows:

      1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.

      2. Use the ARROW keys to locate any keyboard controlling software, press TAB to locate Remove, and then press ENTER.

  2. Restart the computer if you are prompted to do this.

  3. Download the latest IntelliType software. For more information, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Method 3: Restart the HID Human Interface Service

To fix this problem yourself, follow these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in for Services.

    • In Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start Start button , type services.msc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

      User Account Control permission If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    • In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.

  2. In the list of services in the Details pane, double-click HID Human Interface Service, and then make sure that the Startup type is set to Automatic.

If you receive an error code when you try to start the HID Human Interface Service, try method 4. However, if you receive error code 126 or error code 2, try one of the following procedures:

  • If you receive error code 126, extract the Hidserv.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Search for the Hidserv.dll on your system drive. If you cannot locate it on your system drive, locate the file on your Windows CD.

    2. Use the arrow keys to select Extract, and then press ENTER.

    3. Use the ARROW keys to select the folder C:\Windows\System32, and then select this folder as the destination.

    4. Restart the computer.

  • If you receive error code 2, change the registry settings. To do this, follow these steps.

    Note This issue may also occur because of changes in the registry settings.

    Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.     1. Start Registry Editor.

      • In Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start the Start button , type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

      • In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click
        OK.

    2. Locate and then click the following registry key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System

    3. Expand System.

    4. Expand ControlSet001.

    5. Expand Services, and then click HidServ.

    6. In the right pane, right-click Type, and then click Modify.

    7. In the Value data box, make sure that the value is set to 20, and then click OK.

    8. Expand HidServ, and then click Parameters.

      Note If the Parameters registry key does not exist, follow these steps:

      1. Click HidServ.

      2. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.

      3. Type Parameters, and then press ENTER.

    9. In the right pane, right-click ServiceDll, and then click Modify.

      Note If the ServiceDll registry value does not exist, follow these steps:

      1. Click Parameters.

      2. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Expandable String Value.

      3. Type ServiceDll, and then press ENTER.

    10. In the Value data box, verify that the value is set to %SystemRoot%\System32\hidserv.dll. (Verify that there are no spaces before, after or in this value). If the value is not %SystemRoot%\System32\hidserv.dll, type %SystemRoot%\System32\hidserv.dll in the Value data box, and then click OK.

    11. Repeat steps 5 through 10 for each registry key that contains "ControlSet" in the key name. For example, if there is a registry key that is named CurrentControlSet or ControlSet002, click CurrentControlSet or click ControlSet002. Then, repeat steps 5 through 10.

    12. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Method 4: Test on a different computer

If the issue persists, test the keyboard with a different computer. If the keyboard does not work correctly with the other computer, contact our Order Desktop to obtain a replacement keyboard. To do this, call (800) 360-7561.

    12. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Method 4: Test on a different computer

How to boot into the BIOS or the Lifecycle Controller on your PowerEdge Server

To enter the BIOS, press a function <F> key. Which function key to press is dependent upon your specific server. General guidelines are as follows:

  • <F2> Enables you to enter System Setup (BIOS) .
  • <F10> Enables you to enter system services and starts Lifecycle Controller (for iDRAC/Lifecyle Contoller enabled systems)
  • <F11> Enables you to enter Boot Manager.
  • <F12> Enables you to enter PXE Boot.

Press the desired <F> key once every two seconds until you see confirmation on the screen that you are entering the correct mode.
The <F> key menu is in the right of the screen,as show in figure 1.

Note: On older systems, you may not get confirmation. If you do not receive conformation of the mode on screen, then continue to press the correct key, once every two seconds until the mode is showing on screen.

 

On newer servers, you only need to press <F2> once when you see the Dell Splash screen. You should see confirmation of the boot mode in the upper right-hand corner.


Other BIOS may include the Remote Access Card or PERC controller. The method is the same. The two second rule still applies. You still start at the Dell Splash screen. The only difference is the 2 key combination. The POST of the server will display the needed two-key character required. <Ctrl>+<e> and <Ctrl>+<p> are popular for many Dell implementations.



 

Note: The DRAC can also be accessed by pressing <F2>.

Who’s not familiar with this issue? I mean we all had a problem like that in the past but we’d usually ignore it and just press the F1 key and move on, it’s not a critical issue and we can all live without resolving it but some people just choose not to live with such an irritating problem.

In this post, I’m going to walk you keyboard/interface error press f 11 to resume multiple solutions to resolve this issue.

Change BIOS settings

You can simply choose not to see this option ever again by changing the BIOS settings, here’s how to do it:

On the boot screen, you should press a key that’ll allow you to enter the BIOS settings, keyboard/interface error press f 11 to resume, this key may be the Del key or any other key depending on your motherboard’s type, it’s right at the bottom, once you’re in go to the Boot tab then choose Boot Settings Configuration, you’ll see an option that says Wait for F1 if error, go ahead and set it to Disabled and that’s it you’re finished, easy, right? Keep in mind that the steps may vary from a person to another depending on you’re motherboard’s type like I said above but the concept is the same.

Restore the default settings:

If you played around with the settings right before this issue showed up then this might be the cause, reset your BIOS settings and see if it works.

You can do that by reseating the CMOS battery or by simply going to the Exit tab and choosing Load Default Settings then it’ll ask to save the settings and reboot.

Disable the Floppy Disk:

If you don’t have a floppy disk drive then it’s recommended to disable it, especially when no one still uses it.

On the Main tab choose Legacy Diskette A then set it to Disabled, save the settings and exit.

Update the BIOS

Update or reflash the BIOS to the latest version by going to the motherboard’s manufacturer’s official site, follow the instructions provided by their site and be careful when you are doing this.

It’s not a common for a normal user to update the BIOS version, so it needs to be done carefully and choose the perfect time for updating the BIOS when there won’t be any chance for power cuts, so try to be careful and watch a many tutorials as possible on how to do this properly.

Replace CMOS battery

The CMOS battery is a small, circular shaped battery that is found on the motherboard of your computer. It backs up system settings for CMOS which are used keyboard/interface error press f 11 to resume configure your laptop’s BIOS or boot sequence. The CMOS battery stores information related to your computer’s operating system, hardware settings, passwords, time and date information. It also stores information about your computer’s hardware configuration so it can keep track of how much memory you have installed in the computer.

After a while your CMOS battery may cause problems like this one, go ahead and reseat it or replace it with a new one, also consider that by reseating the CMOS battery you’re also resetting the BIOS settings.

Did you know that all CMOS Batteries will lose power? The CMOS Battery will lose power unless it is periodically refreshed. A new CMOS Battery can provide up to 10 years or more of life, depending on the age and type of battery.

Note: The CMOS battery is that silver rounded coin-like piece that’s mounted on your motherboard.

Check for hardware problems

This problem usually occurs because you have a failed hardware, read the message carefully to see what’s wrong and try to fix it.

  2. Apply hard drive firmware patch if applicable. (Available at http://www.hp.com/support.)

  3. Back up contents and replace hard drive.

1796-SATA Cabling Error

One or more SATA devices are improperly attached. For optimal performance, the SATA 0 and SATA 1 connectors must be used before SATA 2 and SATA 3.

Ensure SATA connectors are used in ascending order. For one device, use SATA 0. For two devices, use SATA 0 and SATA 1. For three devices, use SATA 0, SATA 1, and SATA 2.

1801-Microcode Patch Error

Processor is not supported by ROM BIOS.

  1. Upgrade BIOS to proper version.

How to enter and exit the BIOS or CMOS setup

BIOS setup

Every computer provides a way to enter the BIOS or CMOS setup, which lets you configure some basic settings for your computer and its hardware components.

Below is a list of common methods for accessing and exiting your computer's BIOS or CMOS setup and recommendations if you're having trouble.

Important

You must have a working keyboard to enter and exit the BIOS or CMOS setup.

Note

The details for your computer may be unique. If you're unsure, consult the owner's manual for your computer or motherboard if the computer is custom-built.

Access BIOS or CMOS on newer computers

Computers manufactured in the last few years allow you to enter the BIOS or CMOS setup by pressing one of the five keys listed below during the boot process.

Note

F1, F2, and F10 are all function keys on the top of the keyboard.

* If pressing opens a diagnostics tool, your setup key is keyboard/interface error press f 11 to resume .

Setup keys are to be pressed as the computer is booting up. Most users see a message similar to the example below upon startup. Some older computers may also display a flashing block of text to indicate when to press the or keys.

Press F2 to enter BIOS setup.
Tip

If you're unsure what key to press, as the computer boots, try pressing and holding one or more keys on the keyboard to cause a stuck key error. Once you get this error, the option to continue or enter setup should appear.

Note

If you are still unable to enter the BIOS using the methods listed above, check the motherboard's manual for the appropriate key to enter BIOS. Documentation for the motherboard may also be on the manufacturer's website.

Once you have successfully entered the CMOS setup, a screen similar to the example below appears. Your CMOS setup may look different, depending on the manufacturer, but it should still share a lot of the same options and information.

How do I change and save changes in CMOS setup?

Once in CMOS setup, the method for changing the settings often depends on the BIOS manufacturer. You may use the arrow keys and the key to select categories and change their values. Some manufacturers may have you press the Page up and Page down keys to change the values.

Tip

All manufacturers show which keys to use for navigation on the bottom or right side of the setup screen.

I cannot change the values for a setting I want to use

If you're trying to change the clock, speed, or other settings and don't have the option available, the motherboard doesn't support it. If you believe it should be supported, keyboard/interface error press f 11 to resume, you may need a BIOS update.

Tip

If changes you made appear to revert to default settings, keyboard/interface error press f 11 to resume, or the date and time setting in the Dc nsis error keeps falling behind, you may need to replace the CMOS battery. How do I save the changes?

If any changes are made, you need to save those changes, which is usually done by pressing the key on the keyboard. If doesn't work, look at the bottom or top of the screen for the key that's used to save the settings.

Access BIOS or CMOS on older computers

Unlike today's computers, older computers (before 1995) had numerous methods of entering the BIOS setup. Below is a listing of key sequences to press as the computer boots to enter the BIOS setup.

Acer BIOS

If your Acer computer cannot boot or you want to restore the BIOS to its original settings, press and hold the as you turn on the computer. While holding the key, two beeps should be heard to indicate the settings are restored.

AMI BIOS

Older AMI BIOS could be restored to bootable settings by pressing and holding the key as the computer is booting.

BIOS or CMOS diskettes

Early 486, 386, and 286 computers required a floppy disk to enter the BIOS setup. These diskettes may be referred to as ICU, BBU, or SCU disks. Because these diskettes are unique to your computer manufacturer, you must obtain the diskettes from them. See the computer manufacturers list for contact information.

Access BIOS on early IBM computers

Some early IBM computers require you to press and hold both mouse buttons as the computer boots to enter the BIOS setup.

Additional suggestions for accessing BIOS or CMOS

Finally, if none of the above suggestions allow access to the setup, try generating a stuck key error, which gives an option to enter the BIOS or CMOS setup. To do this, press and hold any key on the keyboard, and do not let go (you may get several beeps as you are doing this). Keep pressing the key until the computer stops booting, and you have the option to enter setup. If this does not work, make sure your keyboard is working.

How to exit the BIOS or CMOS

There are several ways to exit the BIOS or CMOS setup depending on the computer's type. The most common methods include the following.

  • Press the key to exit without saving any changes.
  • Press the or key to save changes and exit.
  • Access the Exit or Save & Exit tab in setup and select the Exit or Save and Exit option.

If you have trouble exiting the BIOS or CMOS setup, you can try the following methods to fix the problem.

  • Press the key to load default settings and press to save and exit.
  • Access the Exit or Save & Exit tab in setup, select the Load Sql error duplicate entry Defaults option, select Yes, and press. Any changes made are reverted, keyboard/interface error press f 11 to resume, and the BIOS or CMOS is set back to default settings.
  • Turn off the computer (use only as a last resort and with caution).
