HP Designjet GL/2 Accessory Card or HP Designjet Formatter Board

The HP designjet , , and the all have what are called a GL/2 Accessory Card or Formatter Board installed. Both terms refer to the same part. These board provided advance CAD features and expanded memory. It is not uncommon for them to become defective and need replaced.

The feedback I get from customers is that the main cause of the error is the printer is left on continuously. Resulting in a power surge thru the line that corrupts the ROM chip. Make sure to check your ground to neutral reading on your outlets. Faulty wiring will result in more errors.

HP Designjet Error Code

If you are getting a Error Code -- You Must Replace Your GL/2 Accessory Card or Formatter Board.

A error on the front panel of the printer indicates a formatter card failure. This issue usually does not require on-site service, as the formatter card is a user-replaceable part.

It is a simple fix. The card is located on the back side nearest the power cable plug. There are two expansion cards. One is the network card. The GL/2 card is labeled and needs to be replaced. Simply unscrew it and slide out of the slot.

Part Numbering System

HP has many part numbers for the same part. They like to issue a new part number for a new lot being released for consumption. Here is a breakdown of popular part numbers.

HP Designjet model has three different part numbers: Designjet CH

HP Designjet CH

HP Designjet CA

Please confirm that you have a Designjet printer. The GL/2 Card will not work in a Designjet printer. I have had several customers with a Designjet purchase the GL/2 Card. The GL/2 Card does not work in their printer. This will caused delays with exchanging the card for the card.

  • Hi and thanks for the query. As it is printing (and not Spiceworks) related - I have moved this post to the printers forum. I hope this is helpful.

Does the printer test print work?

How old is the printer - and is it under warranty?

  • Thank you, I have taken the extra memory out and it prints ok.

The printer is about 8 years old and not under warranty.

  • Did you adjust the driver settings to reflect the correct amount of installed memory? Did the printer recognize the memory? Are you able to print any of the built in prints such as printer information? Did you update the firmware to current revision. Maybe you have a bad memory. There are a lot of possible issues causing this.

  • Thanks for your reply, I don't know how to adjust the settings for the correct amount of memory. I have checked and it does recognize the memory. Its just when we send something too the plotter it doesn't print and shows Processing HP-GL/2 on the screen.

  • Do you have a PS? If so, you might want to try the post script driver instead of the HP-GL driver. It would appear that the current generation drivers do not require you to specify memory.

Follow the printhead cleaning instructions below if printhead related, otherwise

  • Thanks Priscilla for the information, the plotter we have is HP Designjet in Printer (CHA) and the memory we installed was part number CHA.

We have updated the drivers but when trying to print the screen just shows processing HP GL/2 and doesnt print. We do not see any error message and if you take the memory card out you can print as bitmap.

Any further help to try would be great.

    Many thanks

    "How to solve the problem:
•Have you selected the correct printer in your software?
•Does the printer work correctly when printing from other software?
    • If the printer is connected to a network, try using it when connected directly to your computer through parallel or USB ports.
    • If your printer is connected to your computer through any other intermediate devices, such as switch boxes, buffer boxes, cable adapters, cable converters, etc., try using it when connected directly to your computer.
•Try another interface cable. For details of supported cables, see Connection specifications.
    File size and memory
There is no direct relationship between file size on your computer and memory used in the printer to print that file. In fact, because of file compression (and general complexity) it is often impossible to estimate how much memory will be used. This means that some large prints will work fine, but some smaller prints may not.
To handle a job that will not print, you can select Send Job as a Bitmap in the driver’s Troubleshooting menu (Services tab). This may slow down print speed. Alternatively, you can install extra memory on the HP-GL/2 Accessory Card in your printer, see Memory."

    ================================================
    ● Update firmware on the printer.
    ● Make sure to install HP Designjet and HP-GL/2 and HP RTL bit driver, ver. It is compatible with Windows You may need to manually set memory value in the driver. Check the driver configuration.
    ● Configure correctly your application and print driver to use supported print languages above.
    ● Align printheads and configure correctly paper size, margins and all other values in the printer, print driver and applications. Values must match across your system. Printer may not print due to mismatch.

    ● Then try to print the document, which prints without the added memory, also when the memory is added. Follow exactly the same steps and use identical settings.
    Report please back.

  • Hi Priscilla, Thank you so much for coming back to me.

Here are our answers to your suggestions

    ● Update firmware on the printer.
Already done that and made no difference

    ● Make sure to install HP Designjet and HP-GL/2 and HP RTL bit driver, ver. It is compatible with Windows You may need to manually set memory value in the driver. Check the driver configuration.

We are printing through a server To allow us to make this change, then plotter would need to be on the network so users can print directly. I’ve ordered a network card for it  but it’s not arrived yet

    ● Configure correctly your application and print driver to use supported print languages above.

Can look at that if we can get plotter onto the network to allow a user to print direct to them

We are currently “printing as bitmap” –  and that is resolving the issue currently as jobs are now printing OK (take a bit longer)

Will see when we get the network card if this makes a difference and let you know.

I appreciate all the help you are giving me.

    Ann

  • #####
If you can print bitmap with new memory installed it means that there is nothing wrong with the new memory and either your configuration in printer, driver and/or application is not correct or you are not using correct driver.

HP Designjet and HP-GL/2 and HP RTL bit driver, Version: , Release date: Apr 17, , is officially compatible with Windows Server . I guess that this driver should work on higher WS version too.

Networking the printer is certainly an improvement but it is not necessary for making the printer work in your current setup. It is my opinion that your issue is caused by using incorrect driver or configuration.

Disable in Windows 10 "Turn on automatic setup of network-connected devices"  under Change advanced sharing settings.

Follow relevant instruction in this post for correct installation of a networked printer:

  • Thank you Priscilla, when I have the memory in it isnt printing but when I take the memory out can print in bitmap.

  • ####
Can you print bitmat with the new memory installed with the same document, same computer, same procedure?

    If not then:
    - The new memory and/or the HP-GL/2 Accessory card may have bad contact and/or may not have been correctly installed. Reseat both memory and the card.
    - The printer, printer driver, application may not be correctly configured for use with the new memory.
    - The new memory may be defective.

System Error (only applicable for Designjet series)

Explanation

A problem has been detected while initializing.

Recommended action

If the problem persists, select Support at the top of the page for additional HP support and contact options.

System error

Explanation

Service station failure

Recommended action

Possible causes could be:

  • The steps counted by the service station motor are not consistent with the expected length of the current movement.
  • The aerosol fan has reached its maximum current limit. If your printer actually has an aerosol fan then the printer is very old. This fan has been removed (dis-included) from the printer assembly long ago. Service may be required to replace the service station and/or related components.
  • The service station motor has shut down because of blockage. Service may be required to remove Debris, adjust or to replace the service station and/or related components.

HP offers no technical support for persons who are not qualified to provide HP Warranty repairs.

Example: Replacing the trailing cable on any DesignJet Printer is not a user service. This is very technical and requires HP-Qualified Service Technicians in order to qualify for HP Warranty coverage. In any case, one who renders repairs to HP Designjet printers (self-help) is strongly recommended to refer to the applicable HP Service Manual, updates and service notes. However, please be aware that HP Service Manuals, technical updates and service notes are published available only for HP-Qualified Service Technicians.

If the problem persists, select Support at the top of the page for additional HP support and contact options.

Q - question

error when printing on DesignJet

A - answer This system error indicates a communication error. Please check the cable connection between the plotter and PC, retry the print job. Make sure you are printing the job over the right driver (in a proper format) - not a /2 job to a plotter with no card or a Postscript job to a plotter with no Postscript support.

Hp error 61 05 the printer recognize the memory?

To handle a job that will hp error 61 05 print, you can select Send Job as a Bitmap in the driver’s Troubleshooting menu (Services tab). This may slow down print speed. Alternatively, you can install extra memory on the HP-GL/2 Accessory Card in your printer, see Memory."

  • Hi Priscilla, Thank you so much for coming back to me.

Here are our answers to your suggestions

    ● Update firmware on the printer.
Already done that and made no difference

    ● Make sure to install HP Designjet and HP-GL/2 and HP RTL bit driver, ver. It is compatible with Windows You hp error 61 05 need to manually set memory value in the driver.

    Ann

If you can print bitmap with new memory installed it means that there is hp error 61 05 wrong with the new memory and either your configuration in printer, driver and/or application is not correct or you are not using correct driver.

HP Designjet and HP-GL/2 and HP RTL bit driver, Version:Release date: Apr 17,is officially compatible with Windows Server .

Can you print bitmat with the new memory installed with the same document, same computer, same procedure?

    If not then:
    - The new memory and/or the HP-GL/2 Accessory card may have bad contact and/or may not have been correctly installed. Reseat both memory and the card.
    - The printer, printer driver, application may not be correctly configured for use with the new memory.
    - The new memory may be defective.

Re: Service error

HP Designjet GL/2 Accessory Card or HP Designjet Formatter Board

The HP designjet, and the all have what are called a GL/2 Accessory Card or Formatter Board installed.

HP Designjet CH

HP Designjet CA

Please hp error 61 05 that you have a Designjet printer. The GL/2 Card will not work in a Designjet printer. I have had several customers with a Designjet purchase the GL/2 Card. The GL/2 Card does not work in their printer. This will caused delays with exchanging pawn 017 error card for the card.

HP Designjet has nearly ten different part numbers.

Here is the HP service manual response to the error
