Halloween: Terrortory

How long has Detroit's Halloween been in the heavy metal game? Almost 30 years now. In this time they've released six studio albums of new material, with Terrortory the most recent. Also, only vocalist Brian Thomas bass player George Neal remain from the original line-up. What has changed is Halloween's basic commitment to fundamental and traditional heavy metal, with lyrical themes from the more spooky side of horror metal.

Halloween Band Photo

Above, Halloween: in dark terrortory.

With Terrortory, the traditional heavy metal fan gets their money's worth. This disc clocks in at over 70 minutes. This alone challenges one's patience, but so also does some the material. Not the least of which is the opening track, the rather unimpressive Traipsing Through the Blood. It's sounds distant, contrived, and tinny. Not exactly Halloween putting their best metal foot forward. At the Gates follows, a throw away segue. When do you get to the meat of this album? The title cut begins, and things improve exponentially.

Images Quite Horrible is quintessential early Eighties metal; Her Ghost Comes Out to Play offers eerie atmosphere; and, Caught in the Webs moves at a near doom metal pace. Perhaps the best track is the most diverse, and certainly epic, Not One. Reinventing Fear offers better heaviness in another semi-plodding number. Hands Around My Throat, another top pick, finds Thomas' strong vocals working with some acoustic guitar; with the metal vibe and steady pace it adds creepiness to the lyrical content. Throughout, the album is peppered with sound guitar solos, and girded by a solid rhythm section.

Halloween's Terrortory is extravagant, simply by virtue of its length. While there's much to enjoy, it sometimes sounds uneven. Maybe they should have reserved some material for another album, considering the more than scattered approach to output. Nevertheless, Terrortory is fundamental classic American heavy metal. Recommended.

It is a hard working town that they come from. With grit and determination they forged a sound that is the embodiment of the Motor City. Since their debut almost 30 years ago, Halloween has shown the world how to rock and roll. It is about attitude. It is about metal. It is music that is as American as baseball and apple pie but with the guts and snarl that only a group from this neck of the woods could bring on. This is the real heavy metal imported from Detroit. It is Halloween and that in itself should be enough to bring a smile to the face of all the head bangers out there. With their new release, the heavy metal horror show once again shows what lurks in the shadows and the darkness within. They will make you fear what is under the bed or hiding in the closet. Halloween will remind you just what evil means!

Clocking in at over 70 minutes, Terrortory gives you a gratuitous amount of the classic metal that is the foundation from which this genre evolved. Harkening back to the days of thunderous stadium rock, Halloween strives to remind you where the roots of metal come from and just how strong they are. They also take a foray into the world where things go bump in the night with a kind of retro feel that makes me think back to the days of the Saturday creep shows that were the domain of Sir Graves Ghastly and The Ghoul. So just sit back and enjoy the show! Don't worry about those strange sounds you hear or the uneasy feeling that comes over you. It is nothing more than the Heavy Metal Horror Show doing what they do best.

It doesn't take long for the chills to begin as you are hit right away with the macabre anthem "Traipsing Through The Blood". Lead singer Brian Thomas will have your spine tingling as the first of their twisted tales take hold of you. Interesting also is the bands drummer Rob Brug steps out front and delivers a blistering six string solo. Wonder what other talents he has been hiding behind his kit! From there the band keeps the assault going and really hits their stride when they take you for a frightful ride into their "Terrortory". The title track is a dark brooding piece of heavy metal thunder that will definitely have you looking around the corner as they take you into the barren wasteland of evil. This is easily one of the highlights of the disc and the guitar solo by guest musician Billy Grey and main guitarist Don Guerrier will leave permanent scars!

There is no real low points to the album. You may feel a certain similarity to some of the songs but this is mostly due to the fact that the band is trying to give the listener a feeling as well as hearing experience and a steady diet of heavy metal grinding is the best way to achieve it. They are relentless and this massive dose of metal will fuel many a head bangers trip to the chiropractor.

This is not to say they don't branch out at all on the album. "Not One" starts out as a power ballad but quickly builds to a powerful crescendo before turning into a majestic bit of melodic metal. "Reinventing Fear" and "I Lie Awake" treads into territory where you might find the likes of Iron Maiden or one of the NWOBHM bands from the era. Then you have the acoustic/electric combination of "Hands Around My Throat" which gives you an almost progressive feel and the haunting piano ballad "Dead On The Inside" which may be one of the most frightening moments on the disc. They close out the album with an acoustic instrumental piece that is a kind of cool down after the workout that Halloween has given you. Believe me, it is needed!

This is an album that only a band like Halloween could deliver. It takes a maturity and a skill level that is not commonplace in the music scene today. Sure there is some campy horror show fun wrapped up in this package but oh what a delightful package it is. Terrortory takes me back in a good way. It is a disc that I have no problem putting in the player and just leaving there. The band is tight and the guitar work throughout is electrifying. Guitarist Donny Allen who was with the band for quite awhile returns to add some of his amazing talents to compliment those of the gifted Guerrier. It is their efforts that really shine on the disc. This one seems much more guitar oriented and has a fierceness about it that really stands out. I wish there were more albums like this one. Lyrically Brian Thomas has done some of his best work and his vocals are as menacing as ever. Some albums just ooze metal and this one is as edgy and tough as the streets of Detroit where they come from.

Halloween — and no kids, not the once Kiske-led Helloween — have just released their fifth studio album in their 27 years of existence. Titled Terrortory, the album somehow picks up where they left off with classics like Victims of the Night and Don’t Metal With Evil. Hailing from Detroit and obviously topically influenced by the likes of Alice Cooper, Halloween plays a unique amalgam of NWOBHM intertwined with good ol’ fashioned American Classic Metal. There’s also Doom elements inside the interwoven tapestries of the sonic nightmares they lure you into, making Terrortory one of those albums impossible to say “they sound just like (some freakin’ other band).”

How else would you want this album to begin with besides “Traipsing Through the Blood?” Before you get off track and think it’s a murderous winter serial killer song, it’s actually … an uplifting call to arms, a Marine-like “seize the day” anthem that belies the visceral title. “Why do we never care, until it’s way too late? Why do we waste our time; we play with fate.” The lyrical content is a query into cowardice, the sin of hesitation, of self-apathy. With the serrated riffing from guitarist Don Gurrier, the machine-gun like unforgiving rhythm section, and vocalist Brian Thomas’ foreboding and damning delivery … the guys set the bar unbelievably high with this opener.

The title track “Terrortory” nearly holds up against “Traipsing Through the Blood.” The galloping guitar riffs are the most mesmerizing ingredient in this concoction. Although simple, like an AC/DC riff, it’s implants itself into your brain tissue and becomes impossible to remove even as you move on to the rest of the story.

The next two tracks alone make this album worth purchase. “Images Quite Horrible” is a nasty, Metal Church-y type composition, breakneck and frothing at the maw. Fans of that type of music will shriek when they hear “Images Quite Horrible.” With deft tempo changes and an overabundance of moribund, it’s a highlight. But then so is “Her Ghost Comes Out to Play.” This is the first time the band dials back the speed if only for a moment, uses foreshadowing to lull you into a false sense of safety, and then pure NWOBHM-type riffs began assaulting you. “Remember when you took a life? You … murderer! Remember how you didn’t care … do you … remember?” Akin to a King Diamond tale, this is Halloween at the top of their game. Every single facet of this song works; it’s no wonder modern bands like Cauldron eagerly announce Halloween as one of their influences. What was once will be again …

Where Halloween runs into a corpse-filled roadblock, if there is one, is that there’s so much music to digest here. Over an hour in length and with 16 songs, after a while, the songs begin running into each. Of course, that isn’t the case with “Scare You,” another blazing dark fantasy. “I’ll never let you go; I’ll be there with you, after you’re dead. I will scare you!” Please don’t send this to an ex on Valentine’s Day — you’ll find yourself under arrest or in a straightjacket, or both.

“Not One” is one of the slower tracks on Terrortory. It’s an acoustic-led dirge at the onset, with Thomas’ honest vocals up front and center. He wades between a forthright full voice to an eerie falsetto, not as high as King Diamond but surely just as menacing. Halloween isn’t about writing ballads, though, so by two minutes into the song it goes back to that doomy, mid-tempo pace most of the songs stalk you with. Oh, and that’s only song eight …

The most unnerving tracks towards the end are “Reinventing Fear” and “Hands Around My Throat.” The most oddball one is the sloppy, sort of Misfits takeoff on “Say Your Prayers.” The swirling and evocative “Dead On …” is Halloween reminding you to stop thinking they are a one-trick pony. Instead of funereal, it’s graceful and sorrow-laden.

Terrortory, whether it finds an appropriate audience or not, deserves a listen. If you are into NWOBHM-influenced horror Heavy Metal, this is the band to check out. While seemingly blunt in its musical approach, you’ll be surprised to find the multiple layers beneath the surface of tracks like “Dead On …” and “Her Ghost Comes Out to Play.” Keep digging and digging until the flesh grates off your fingers … you are bound to find something worthwhile on Terrortory

Halloween — and no kids, not the once Kiske-led Helloween — have just released their fifth studio album in their 27 years of existence. Titled Terrortory, the album somehow picks up where they left off with classics like Victims of the Night and Don’t Metal With Evil, halloween - terrortory 2012.

How else would you want this album to begin with besides “Traipsing Through the Blood?” Before you get off track and think it’s a murderous winter serial killer song, it’s halloween - terrortory 2012 … an uplifting call to arms, a Marine-like “seize the day” anthem that belies the visceral title, halloween - terrortory 2012. “Why do we never care, until it’s way too late? Why do we waste our time; we play with fate.” The lyrical content is a query into cowardice, the sin of hesitation, of self-apathy. With the serrated riffing from guitarist Don Gurrier, the machine-gun like unforgiving rhythm section, halloween - terrortory 2012, and vocalist Brian Thomas’ foreboding and damning delivery … the guys set the bar unbelievably high with this opener.

The title track “Terrortory” nearly holds up against “Traipsing Through the Blood.” The galloping guitar riffs are the most mesmerizing ingredient in this concoction. Although simple, like an AC/DC riff, it’s implants itself into your brain tissue and becomes impossible to remove halloween - terrortory 2012 as you move on halloween - terrortory 2012 the rest of the story.

The next two tracks alone make this album worth purchase. “Images Quite Horrible” is a nasty, Metal Church-y type composition, halloween - terrortory 2012, breakneck and frothing at the maw.

Of course, that isn’t the case with “Scare You,” another blazing dark fantasy, halloween - terrortory 2012. “I’ll never let you go; I’ll be there with you, halloween - terrortory 2012, after you’re dead. I will scare you!” Please don’t send this to an ex on Valentine’s Day — you’ll find yourself under arrest or halloween - terrortory 2012 a straightjacket, or both.

If you are into NWOBHM-influenced horror Heavy Metal, this halloween - terrortory 2012 the band to check out.

Halloween: Terrortory

by Craig Hartranft,

They also take a foray into the world where things go bump in the night with a kind of retro feel that makes me think back to the days of the Saturday creep shows that were the domain of Sir Graves Ghastly and The Halloween - terrortory 2012. So just sit back and enjoy the show! Don't worry about those strange sounds you hear or the uneasy feeling that comes over you. It is nothing more than the Heavy Metal Horror Show doing what they do best.

It halloween - terrortory 2012 take long for the chills to begin as you are hit right away with the macabre anthem "Traipsing Through The Blood". Lead singer Brian Thomas will have your spine tingling as the first of their twisted tales take hold of you. Interesting also is the bands drummer Rob Brug halloween - terrortory 2012 out front and delivers a blistering six string solo.

It takes a maturity and a skill level that is not commonplace in the music scene today, halloween - terrortory 2012. It is their efforts that really halloween - terrortory 2012 on the disc.

Halloween Terrotory Review

Halloween: Terrortory

Heavy Metal

by Craig Hartranft,

How long has Detroit's Halloween been in the heavy metal game? Almost 30 years now. In this time they've released six studio albums of new material, with Terrortory the most recent. Also, only vocalist Brian Thomas bass player George Neal remain from the original line-up. What has changed is Halloween's basic commitment to fundamental and traditional heavy metal, with lyrical themes from the more spooky side of horror metal.
