Unable to find X server when running evaluation #29

Hello, I'm trying to evaluate the pre-trained model weights (which I have downloaded) using the steps on the readme within the models directory. The cloned repo resides on an AWS EC2 instance with Ubuntu 18.04 and Nvidia GPU. I have tried running the evaluation code via XQuartz terminal with X11 forwarding, and via the local terminal in an RDP (enabled through xRDP). After activating my conda environment which contains the dependencies and cd-ing to $ALFRED_ROOT (i.e., top-level directory of repo), my command is as follows:

In both setups, when running the command, I'm getting the following error (one for each thread I'm trying to start, and also in single-thread case):

I'm a novice in this area, but it seems (in my limited understanding) that the Thor component of this code can't access the X server to do some GUI rendering, e.g., of the simulated images during evaluation. However, in both setups, I can verify that the $DISPLAY variable is populated with something reasonable, e.g., "localhost:10.0" on XQuartz, and ":13.0" on RDP. I can also successfully run "xclock" and "xeyes" in both setups.

FYI, I am able to successfully begin training a new model from scratch, so it seems the dependencies, etc. are set up correctly.

I've been struggling with this problem for about a day now and haven't found much useful information online for it, so any information or insight is appreciated! Thank you!

The Xorg log files I could see only show one error showing a failure to load the "ati" driver, but that's irrelevant because the amdgpu driver was loaded. I guess then that the logs were of successful root running X but I can't say. The .xinitrc in your link carries a lot of script. I would suggest that you try to get X up as a user with much simpler configs to see if it will run, a sort of "proof of concept" approach. So, I suggest you do this:
1. write .xinitrc like this:

If you don't have xterm, you can use another xterminal. The point is to see if you can get one program up in X.

2. Boot up to a text prompt and log in as user. The terminal should be "tty1" which you can check with the command: tty.
3. Run xinit telling it specifically what to do:

where <user> is replaced by the correct username entry. If successful, this will bring up X and give you a single xterm. I noticed in your xinit command in the original post that you were directing X to ":1" which is a second screen whereas ":0" is the first screen which I would have thought is the one you would want to appear.

If the xterm, or xterminal you choose gets up, you can try and start the i3 window manager in that with the command: i3 &, or something like that.

If this doesn't work, you can check the Xorg log file, but it's about all I can offer at this point.

I have a PC I am dedicating as a server for Minecraft. It is running Ubuntu Server 20.04.2

Im fine using command line but I don't like only having one space to work. My solution is startx

I have used startx in the past and I enjoy using it. Black background that I can have multiple terminals open without pulling too many resources for graphics.

When I start the server I get a GUI login screen instead of a command line and when I log in I have a whole Gui Desktop instead of a command line.

I replaced it with 3. After reboot gives me same error after execution of startx.

I gather from this statement that the virtual computer did boot to runlevel 3, and showed a text prompt, at which you ran "startx" which failed to bring up X.

I see two problems, the segmentation fault and:

I'd try the permission issue first.

You should have something at least as permissive as that. X should by default have permission to write to the tty.

I ran the Software Manager and now startx doesn't start anymore. After I start my laptop and log in, the screen stays stuck on the login page (I tried with both gdm and lightdm).

Update 2 The best solution I found so far is to switch to virtual terminal, remove the .Xauthority file then run ´startx´. But I need to do this every time I boot.

However, this is intended as a remote GPU unit in a datacenter, so I'm hoping to start X with startx instead. I have a similar server for which this was no error x server ubuntu startx ASUS Prime B365M-A with Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-9100 CPU @ 3.60GHz, AMD Radeon RX 5700T (Sapphire Pulse brand).

/etc/X11/Xwrapper.config is set to: allowed_users=anybody

If I try startx as a normal user, I get (after a delay):

appears to be where it goes wrong, but after a lot of searching I have no idea why!

SYNOPSIS

startx [ [ client ] options . ] [ -- [ server ] [ display ] options . ]

DESCRIPTION

The startx script is a front end to xinit(1) that provides a somewhat nicer user interface for running a single session of the X Window System. It is often run with no arguments. Arguments immediately following the startx command are used to start a client in the same manner as xinit(1). The special argument '--' marks the end of client arguments and the beginning of server error x server ubuntu startx. ENVIRONMENTVARIABLES

DISPLAY This variable gets set to the name of the display to which clients should connect. Note that this gets set, not read. XAUTHORITY This variable, if not already defined, gets set to $(HOME)/.Xauthority. This is to prevent the X server, if not given the -auth argument, from automatically setting up insecure host-based authentication for the local host. FILES

$(HOME)/.xinitrc Client to run. Typically a shell script which runs many programs in the background. $(HOME)/.xserverrc Server to run. Ubuntu Server: How to have only startx as a GUI

I have a PC I am dedicating as a server for Minecraft. It is running Ubuntu Server 20.04.2

Im fine using command line but I don't like only having one space to work. My solution is startx

I have used startx in the past and I enjoy using it. Black background that I can have multiple terminals open without pulling too many resources for graphics.

Specifically,

It has worked before with Ubuntu Server 20.04.1 but stopped working recently

When I start the server I get a GUI login screen instead of a command line and when I log in I have a whole Gui Desktop instead of a command line.

Summary:

  1. I want to boot up the system and error x server ubuntu startx greeted by a command line login
  2. When logged in I want it to stay in a command line zend framework errorcontroller I type "startx"
  3. When typing "startx" I want startx to run the startx GUI

It has worked before with these instructions but won't work now. What do I need to do?
