Troubleshoot PostScript errors

Do you receive the error only with a specific page or elements on a page? After you rule out a damaged file as the cause, a damaged or incorrectly written element or font is likely causing the error. An element or combination of elements that requires more memory than is available could be causing the error. If the error occurs with a range of pages, look for common elements on those pages. If you can print all elements individually or in small groups, the combination of elements you print requires more memory than is available.

To isolate the element or elements that cause the problem, make a copy of the file. Then send groups of pages to the PostScript interpreter, error undefined offendingcommand vm. If a group causes an error, print one page at a time from that group. Continue sending pages until you narrow down the problem page. You can then isolate the elements causing the problem by removing elements from each page. If you remove a page and the error doesn't recur, the elements you just removed cause the problem.

If an element that causes the problem is text or an element you created in the application, re-create the element. For text elements, you can also try using a different font (for example, reformat the scsi controller configuration error 02 using a different type of font). If the error doesn't recur with a different font, the previous font is damaged. Reinstall it from the original media.

If the element causing the problem is an imported graphic, first try reimporting canon pixma printer error code 5100 graphic. If the error still occurs, open the graphic in the application in which it was created, resave it with a different name. Make sure that it prints from that application, and then reimport the graphic. If the imported graphic still causes the error, try resaving it in a different format. Or, export it from a different application, or simplify it so error undefined offendingcommand vm it requires less memory. An imported graphic can cause a PostScript error if it contains damaged or incorrectly written information. It can also cause an error if it is too complex for the PostScript interpreter (for example, it requires more memory than is available).

If the file causes a PostScript error because it is too complex, simplify it and see if it prints. To begin simplifying a complex file, do the following:

  • reduce the number of imported graphics
  • reduce the number of fonts that are downloaded
  • reduce the number of text effects (for example, skewing, rotation)
  • delete elements you don't need, create paths using fewer points
  • reimport bitmap images with ones that have been resampled at a lower resolution

Graphic formats such as EPS are updated periodically, so older applications can use an older graphic standard that newer PostScript interpreters can't understand.

ERROR: undefinedresources OFFENDING COMMAND: findresource STACK: /ProcSet /KMOptions -dictionary-

First I thought it might be the driver, error undefined offendingcommand vm, so I installed a new driver and this didn't work, error undefined offendingcommand vm. Then I thought it might be something to do with the connection to the printer so I swapped out the network cable and made sure the port was patched properly. Eventually we just swapped the Mac over with a known working one. I tested it on our printer and it worked just fine, so I thought 'yay, it must be finally fixed'. Anyway I took it over to the user and swapped it over, and lo and behold, it would only print out this error again.

The printer works perfectly for everyone else, it just seems to be this user. I'm at my wit's end here any ideas?

  • Sorted.

This was the first Mac that I had installed the drivers onto, since they have only just been released. Everyone else had the drivers. For some reason, the copy of the driver we had saved on the server wouldn't install so I downloaded a new copy of the drivers from the website and installed these, which allowed me to print! Magic.

Strange that the drivers don't work but the ones do.

    • The Mac is running OSX Mavericks by the way. Also I had a Google earlier about the error message and found the following information, which might be useful for the right person.

"A named resource instance sought by findresource cannot be found; that is, error undefined offendingcommand vm, no such instance exists either in VM or in external storage. This error arises only in the case of findresource with a defined resource category.

If the category itself is not defined, resource operators execute the undefined error.

Thanks for the reply- she has the same access as several other users so I don't think it's a permissions issue.

Also, I replaced the Mac and created an entirely new user account with it, it's highly unlikely that she'd corrupt two completely different accounts in two days in exactly the same way.

I'm willing to believe that's true, I just haven't ever seen it.  To me, that means it can't happen "just as easily."

Regardless, it's still something OP should check.

    • Last time I saw something similar to this was with an older HP printer, Windows 8 machine, HP Universal driver.

First universal driver I installed was for PCL6. I had communication with the printer, had a print job php set fatal error handler, and out came the error message instead. Error undefined offendingcommand vm the same as your error message, but similar. As it turns out, the print driver I was using wasn't compatible with the printer itself. Printer had no idea what to do with PCL6. Installed the correct print driver, HP Universal PCL 5, and all was well.

Maybe installing the newer driver wasn't the answer because it needs an older driver? When I printed out a config page from the printer I was working on it listed error undefined offendingcommand vm languages (I think?) and PCL6 wasn't on the list.

Sorry for the lack of specifics. I didn't document the issue well. :-\

Hmm it seemed like a driver issue to me, but I have downloaded the only compatible driver for the OS from the Develop website. I even tried to use one from Konica Minolta, since they are in effect the same printers with a different badge, and had exactly the same error.

Fix undefined 'OFFENDING COMMAND' error on the printer

There are many users who have shared the experience of using the same printer error, which is when they print PDF image files on some PostScript printers , on these image files when The reprint contains the following error message:

Undefined - OFFENDING COMMAND: showpage - STACK

Many people think that this is a printing error of the printer, because on their text absolutely does not contain the message text like this.

If you have similar problems with printer errors of this type, please take a look at the ways to fix the error Undefined - OFFENDING COMMAND on the printer with the detailed instructions that I will present in the article below. .

    1. Check the printer driver

Almost every printer's functions that users usually use are controlled via the driver. And when this error occurs, it seems that the cause is from the driver of the printer.

Picture 1 of Fix undefined 'OFFENDING COMMAND' error on the printer

Therefore, the first troubleshooting step you should take is to check and update the latest driver version for your printer. First, open the printer's Properties dialog box , click the Setup tab , and then select About to check the driver version.

Also, go to the printer manufacturer's website to search for the latest version of the printer driver you are using. If you did this but the error still appears, try removing the driver, then try reinstalling from the original installation drive or CD-ROM.

    2. Deselect the features in the Advanced section

You can also fix the Undefined - OFFENDING COMMAND error in another way.

    The steps are as follows:

Step 1: To access the printer driver interface, click the search box at the bottom left of your screen and type the term Control Panel , press Enter and then click Devices and Printers.

Step 2: Now you will see a series of icons that identify all the printers that have driver installed. In which the default printer is a printer with a green check mark. Next, right-click on the printer icon you want to access.

Step 3: Now a menu will appear with two options: Printing Preferences and Printer Properties . Click Printer properties> Advanced tab.

Picture 2 of Fix undefined 'OFFENDING COMMAND' error on the printer

Step 4: Here, you just need to uncheck the Advanced printing features box. This will allow you to continue printing the printout without problems.

Once this feature is disabled, the files will be saved in RAW format , or it could be Postscript, PCL or the printer's native language. This allows the printer to easily read the file format and limit the occurrence of similar errors.

    3. Clear the existing print queue and add the printer

    The steps are as follows:

Step 1: In the Printers list, select your printer. After that, just press the Minus button to delete it, then click the Add button to continue.

Picture 3 of Fix undefined 'OFFENDING COMMAND' error on the printer

Step 2: Find and select your printer name from the Printers list , then click Add to add your printer to the computer.

Step 3: Click Print Using or Use, and choose your printer name.

Step 4: Your new printer queue will be displayed in the Printers list in idle status. Then try reprinting to check.

    4. Disable Optimize printing for PS printer feature

To disable the Optimize printing for PS printer, follow these steps:

Picture 4 of Fix undefined 'OFFENDING COMMAND' error on the printer

Step 1: You navigate to the printer's printing options.

Step 2 : Uncheck the Optimize printing for PS printer box and it 's done.

You can see that it is very easy to disable the Optimize printing for PS printer feature. This will help the printer to prevent the problem, so try doing this again after you try to check the problem.

If, after performing the above methods, you still encounter the error Undefined - OFFENDING COMMAND, then check and make sure that your printer and the computer are connected to the same Internet, and double check see if your computer software is up to date.

So I have shown you how to fix the error Undefined - OFFENDING COMMAND on the easiest printer. Hopefully this article will be helpful to you. I wish you successful implementation!

We have a user who, when she prints *anything* out, an error code is printed out instead.

    Text

ERROR: undefinedresources OFFENDING COMMAND: findresource STACK: /ProcSet /KMOptions -dictionary-

First I thought it might be the driver, so I installed a new driver and this didn't work.

"A named resource instance sought by findresource cannot be found; that is, no such instance exists either in VM or in external storage. This error arises only in the case of findresource with a defined resource category.

If the category itself is not defined, resource operators execute the undefined error.

      Causes:

findencoding executes the undefinedresource error if the encoding array specified by key does not exist or cannot be found."

    • If the printer is managed, make sure the user has access to it.  Another issue may be that the user's profile is corrupt.  You might have to backup their data, delete the user and re-create them.  Contrary to what Mac fans want the rest of us to believe, Macs can be corrupted just as easily as any other system.

I had communication with the printer, had a print job submitted, and out came the error message instead. Not the same as your error message, but similar. As it turns out, the print driver I was using wasn't compatible with the printer itself. Printer had no idea what to do with PCL6. Installed the correct print driver, HP Universal PCL 5, and all was well.

Maybe installing the newer driver wasn't the answer because it needs an older driver? When I printed out a config page from the printer I was working on it listed installed languages (I think?) and PCL6 wasn't on the list.

How to Fix the Undefined – OFFENDING COMMAND Printer Error

Have you ever been in a situation where you were printing a PDF file, however, an extra page was printed and the Windows 10/11 error Undefined – OFFENDING COMMAND suddenly popped up on your screen?

If yes, don’t worry because we’ve got your back. Many Windows 10/11 users have encountered the same error, too. For that reason, we’ve compiled a few must-try fixes below. But before we share them with you, let’s get to know this error message first.

What is Undefined – OFFENDING COMMAND Error?

The Undefined – OFFENDING COMMAND error most likely occurs when you try to print a document that is too large or one that contains images with a high resolution. To fix this, all you have to do is reduce the size of the document or reduce the resolution of the image. However, if none of the said solutions work, try any of the recommended fixes below.

Ways to Resolve the Undefined – OFFENDING COMMAND Error on Windows 10/11

It’s easy to resolve the Undefined – OFFENDING COMMAND on your Windows 10/11 device. All you have to do is try the solutions we have listed below. You don’t need to try everything. You can work your way down the list until you find a fix that works for you.

Solution #1: Check the printer drivers

Every printer function and feature can be controlled using its driver. However, if the printer is faulty or outdated, then it is likely that you will come across error messages, such as Undefined – OFFENDING COMMAND.

Unfortunately, most people don’t know that their printer drivers are outdated, and they are missing out on a lot of the features, new updates, and performance enhancements that come with newer versions.
Updating printer drivers is not a difficult task. It can be done manually by going to the manufacturer’s website, or it can be done automatically by updating your drivers through your operating system’s update feature.

So, to avoid and prevent any printer-related problems, it is important that you make sure you have installed the latest printer drivers on your Windows 10/11 computer.

Here’s a step by step guide on what to do:

    1. Go to Control Panel.
    2. Select Hardware and Sound.
    3. Click Device Manager. This will show all hardware installed and embedded on your computer.
    4. Navigate to the Printers drop-down section.
    5. Click Update Driver.
    6. At this point, you have to choose whether you want to search for drivers manually or automatically. Should you wish to choose the automatic method, you need to install a third-party tool like Auslogics Driver Updater. Otherwise, you have to manually find a compatible printer driver. You may visit the manufacturer’s site and download it from there.
    7. Once you have the driver installer, run it to complete the set-up and update your printer driver.

Solution #2: Clear your printer queue

Sometimes, your printer may just be confused about what to prioritize due to the long queue. As a result, it throws the Undefined – OFFENDING COMMAND error.

To fix this issue, here’s what you should do:

    1. In the Printers List, click on your printer.
    2. Click the Minus (-) button to delete it.
    3. Next, click Add.
    4. Find the name of your printer from the Printer list. After that, click Add again.
    5. Choose Print Using.
    6. Select your printer.
    7. Your new printer queue will now appear in the printer list. It’s usually set to idle status.
    8. Try to print the document again.

Solution #3: Disable the Advanced Printing feature

Windows 10/11 has an Advanced Printing feature that is considered a residual of Windows NT. Once disabled, documents will be printed in RAW format, allowing printers to easily read the files.

To avoid issues associated with the Advanced Printing feature, disable it by following these steps:

    1. Into the search box, input Control Panel and hit Enter.
    2. Go to Devices and Printers.
    3. You will now see a list of icons for each printer that has an installed driver. The default printer is often the one that has a green check-mark. Right-click on the icon of the printer you want to use.
    4. A new menu will pop up. It will present you with two choices: Printer Properties and Printing Preferences.
    5. Go to Printer Properties > Advanced tab.
    6. Untick the Advanced printing features option. You should now be able to print documents without any problems.

Solution #4: Disable the Optimize Printing Option for PS Printers

In some cases, a solution as simple as disabling the optimize printing option for PS printers will resolve the problem, therefore, you can give it a try.

To disable the optimize printing for PS printers option, do this:

    1. Go to the Cortana search field and type printers. This will take you to the Printers section of Settings.
    2. Select your printer and navigate to the printing options section.

Here is how to disable the Optimize Printing Option for PS Printers in Windows 11 and 10

    1. Then uncheck the Optimize printing for PS printing option.

Hopefully, this resolves the undefined offending command error.

Solution #5: Restart the Print Spooler Service

Some users found success in getting rid of the undefined offending command error by simply restarting the printer spooler service. To do this, perform the following actions:

    1. Press the Windows + R keys simultaneously to launch the Run window.
    2. Then input sprers.eu into the blank field of the Run window. This will take you to the Services window.
    3. Now, scroll down the list until you find the Print Spooler service.

Try restarting the printer spooler service

    2. Don’t close the Services window yet.
    3. Then open File Explorer and clear the current printer jam. You can find it within the Windows folders.
    4. Delete all files in this folder to clear the jam.
    5. Return to the Services window and restart the Print Spooler service by right-clicking on it and selecting Start.

    Solution #6: Restart the printer

Sometimes, all that your printer needs is a restart. If there are printing tasks that cannot be shifted, then a restart should flush them out.

To restart your printer, switch it off, disconnect it from your computer, plug it back in, and turn it on. Then try to print.

Restarting your computer can also help!

Solution #7: Scan your Windows 10/11 computer

Diagnosis is usually half the cure. By scanning your entire system, you can locate junk files and speed-reducing problems that result in app crashes and error messages.

Junk files are unnecessary and unwanted files that are created by your system or from the apps you use. They can take up space on your device and affect performance. And these files can be found on any device running on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, or iOS.

To scan your system, you may use a trustworthy PC repair tool. These tools have been created using precise techniques that allow them to identify issues that can be safely resolved without having to risk personal or private information.

Malware can also be a serious problem for your Windows PC, and it can cause the PC to crash and interrupt internal processes, such as those that involve the use of printers.

The most basic way to scan for malware is by using an antivirus program. However, your built-in antivirus program is not always able to detect new malware that is released on the market as soon as it becomes available. That’s why you need to scan your PC with third-party anti-malware programs.

Take note that there are many different types of anti-malware programs today, and they all work in roughly the same way. They are installed on your computer and then constantly monitor your system for any signs of malware or viruses. If they find anything suspicious, they will alert you so that you can remove it.
