Message about a Problem with the Clipboard

When Rod is working with Excel, he sometimes receives an error message stating "There's a problem with the clipboard, but you can still paste this content within this workbook." He wonders what causes this message and how he can get rid of it.

This is an odd little error message that, it seems, doesn't have a lot of purpose in Excel. As noted in the error message, if you can still paste the contents of the Clipboard, then the message is nothing but purely informational (as it doesn't really impede Excel). Even though it seems informational, it still slows down the use of Excel.

The message is apparently caused if you try to use Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X, the Format Painter tool, or a drag-and-drop operation and Excel detects that the Clipboard is locked by a non-Office application or, in some cases, simply accessed a non-Office application. You can find through a search of the Web that this problem has affected many users. (I did a search for "there's a problem with the clipboard, but you can still paste"—with the quote marks—and found lots of discussion about the issue.)

It also appears that this problem has been around for quite some time and that Microsoft has been playing whack-a-mole trying to track it down and fix it. Different reports indicate that it first cropped up in Excel 2013, but most experienced it beginning with Excel 2016. A potential fix that has worked for some people is to follow these steps:

  1. Display the File Tab of the ribbon.
  2. Click the Options button at the left side of the screen. Excel displays the Excel Options dialog box.
  3. Make sure that General is selected at the left side of the dialog box. (See Figure 1.)
  4. Figure 1. The Excel Options dialog box.

  5. Clear the Enable Live Preview check box.
  6. Click on OK.
  7. Restart Excel.

If you experience the error and the above steps don't fix it, we may need to be content to know that Microsoft is aware of the problem and is trying to get it fixed. (I know that knowledge doesn't provide a whole lot of contentment to those experiencing the problem; it can be very frustrating.)

All Microsoft Office Applications like Microsoft Excel, PPT, and others have their own clipboard feature. Microsoft Office allows its users to copy the same formatting or paste it as plain text.

Sometimes when the user tries to copy anything from the Microsoft Excel file the Excel application throws an error message There’s a problem with the clipboard, but you can still paste your content within this workbook.

This happens when a user tries to copy something because another application is using your clipboard. Once Microsoft Office starts throwing this error message then from that time you can only copy and paste to other programs, but not on any Microsoft Office applications.

Before fixing this issue, you have to find out that which program is using your clipboard and preventing you from accessing it through Microsoft Excel.

This Excel clipboard error message appears when you press Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X, via the Format Painter and only copying complete cells. But, it doesn’t appear up while trying to copy an element of the cell content.

I have browsed several Excel communities in the search of a solution and found this Excel problem with clipboard several times meanwhile using the application. It is an irritating error message that generally comes in to view at the second Ctrl+C after opening an Excel spreadsheet.

Input Director Version 1.2.2 (Build 76)
Master: Windows 7 (64 bit)
Slave: Windows Server 2008 R2 (64 bit)

Both computers have multiple network interfaces (wired, wireless,
VPN, ...) and I have already set the preferred network interface under
global preferences.

Copy/Paste from Windows 7 Master to Windows 2008 slave ALWAYS results
in the keyboard mouse stalling for about 20-30 seconds and the well
known "Clipboard paste failed; unable to retrieve clipboard data from
remote system" error. The other way around NEVER generates this error.

Occasionally the error will produce after a local copy/paste on
Windows 7 and then simply transitioning to the 2008 machine.

Until a couple of weeks ago the Windows 7 machine was running VISTA
(32 bit) and ID worked flawlessly in that setup for about a year.
After the re-install the trouble started.

I really used to do a lot of copy/paste between both machines so this
really bothers me... When I work at home the Win7 laptop is used for
mail and the 2008 desktop for "everything else". Now that I am no
longer able to copy/paste stuff from my mails to my work machine the
current setup is far less effective...

Help... please ....

Regards,

Eric

OK... I've done a bit more browsing on the forum and I came across
build 88.

After the upgrade I experienced the "failed transition" problem
mentioned in some other posts. I immediately suspected the McAfee HIPS
product (Host Intrusion Protection) and put both the firewall and the
app monitoring parts of it in "adaptive learning mode".

Unlike build 76, this time I got rule update prompts not simply for
the transitioning (that happened in 76 too) but also a prompt when I
tried to do the copy/paste operation. This updated the McAfee HIPS
ruleset properly and now everything works fine.

Shane, do you recommend the use of build 88 or is there another
version between 76 and 88 that you would recommend instead (or that
you would like me to try to see if everything works there as well) ?

Thanks for a great product,

Eric

Hi,

Build 88 is best one to try. If it wasn't for lack of time of late, I
would have updated this from EXPERIMENTAL to BETA. It's stable and
it's fixing several of the common problems that folks email me about.
I'm now hoping to release the next update early in the near year.

Regs,

Shane.

Hi Shane,

I find that when I reboot my systems, Input Director starts
automatically but I get a warning message saying the shared clipboard
is not available.
If I shut it down and restart Input Director it starts up just fine.

This happens on several systems (xp, win 2003 server, windows 7_

Any idea what's going on and what I can to to fix it?

Thanks and Happy Holidays,

No need to create a new profile or anything. I was able to slove this problem by rebooting my pc but it is annoying and didn't work sometimes - I also have two monitors - One CRT and one LCD. If I moved the screen I am trying to capture to the CRT (monitor 1) it works fine. Windows has a problem trying to capture and paste data from monitor 2 that has the desktop extended to it. I am using Windows XP.

Hope this will helps.

I have this problem on my windows xp professional laptop connected to a single 24" LCD at 1920x1200. I am guessing its something do to more with the resolution than with dual monitors.

Anyone come up with a permanent fix for this?

The MikenessApr 24, 2009, 10:46pm EDTReport Abuse>> Re: Error getting Clipboard Data

I find that a restart solves this, it is as if the memory is full, or some sort of internal windows heap.

Another thing that sometimes works is to move one of the screens up or down, such as if your smaller monitors top lines up with the bigger monitors top, move it so they line up at the bottom instead, apply the change, then move it back after if you want, and then SOMETIMES it works again.

closing off programs etc rarely works, which leads me to believe it's maybe one of those internal windows heap sizes, which might also be fixed by the following:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/126962

Which also fixed some other strange problems for me, such as inability to remote desktop in to a comp with a large resolution screen or dual monitor, etc.

Hello,
I would suggest you to take out one monitor and work only with one monitor. Now check whether you can Prt Scr your image in the paint application. If this is happening then there was issue of second monitor. Many times this pasting of the images is not supported with the dual monitors. So you will have to work on single monitor. Once it is successful also try to the same with the another monitor. Hope that too will work.
