    Hi Lucinda,

    Thanks for posting your question on the Forums of community of Microsoft.

    You did changes to the computer before the show?

    Here are some ways you can follow to resolve the problem:

    Method 1:

    The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service service must be started and startup type must be set to automatic.
    Steps to follow:
    a. Click Start, type services in the start search box and press ENTER.
    (b) in the Services window, find a remote and made procedure call a right click on it to select Properties.
    c. under the general tab, make sure the startup type is automatic and the Service status is started.

    Method 2:
    Disable security error 1722 rpc server is unavailable antivirus or other software installed on the computer and check.
    Important note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    Read these next...

    One of my branch domain controllers, SINGAPOREDC is not replicating with its replication partner in our data center, CENTRALDC-02. I discovered the issue when I noticed an updated file in the netlogon folder was not updating everywhere.

    It seems to be just this one branch server. Other branch domain controllers that replicate with CENTRALDC-02 are fine.

    On SINGAPOREDC, the RpcSs.exe is listening on TCP port 135. It is open in the firewall, and querying the port returns that it is listening. It's also listening on ports 389, 3268, and 3269.

    Performing a dcdiag /test:replications on SINGAPOREDC shows errors 1256 (The remote system is not available) and 1722 (The RPC server is unavailable) replicating from the central DC to the branch DC. No errors running this on the central DC.

    Performing repadmin /replsummary also shows error 1722, with 4 fails out of 5 attempts.

    I have rebooted both of these DCs. The RPC service is running. It appears to have all of its DNS records in place. Forcing a replication via Sites & Services sometimes throws an error saying it can't communicate with the server.

    Performing dcdiag /test:dns /v /e on SINGAPOREDC gives many errors, as shown below. Note that while it fails communicating with some domain controllers, it passes for others.

    Got this error for several but not all domain controllers.

    • Sounds like you have DNS issues going on.  Maybe try this on SINGAPOREDC and CENTRALDC-02

      net stop netlogon && net stop dns && ipconfig /flushdns && nbtstat -R && nbtstat -RR && net start dns && net start netlogon && ipconfig /registerdns

      then try to replicate again.

    • These are 2008 R2 servers, but the domain is 2003 functional level.

      I ran the steps in your first post, but that did not resolve the issue. I had already run it on the SINGAPOREDC before. But I ran it again on both, then attempted a replication, but the problem remains.

      Klist doesn't show any old tickets.

    • It has been several hours since I ran those steps and attempted a replication. But in the last half hour, there's been some improvement.

      On CENTRALDC-02, there are no errors shown with either dcdiag /test:replications, nor with repadmin /replsum.

      On SINGAPOREDC, I ran dcdiag /test:replications and it did not show any errors. I ran repadmin /replsum and it shows this

    Error 1722 RPC Server Unavailable (RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE) is a quite common Windows error. Often domain administrators face this error when AD replication is not working as expected. However, this error can also appear on workstations running Windows 10 or Windows Server, without the ADDS role installed. This article will show how to troubleshoot and fix the RPC error 1722 in different cases.

    Active Directory Domain Controller Replication Error: The RPC Server is Unavailable

    In this section we’ll take a look at the basic ways to fix Active Directory replication Error 1722: The RPC server is unavailable when syncing changes between domain controllers. You can face the error both in the domain controller event logs and when trying to start or check the replication status using the repadmin tool.

    For example, you want to check the current status of Active Directory domain controllers with the command:

    repadmin /replsummary

    error 1722 the rpc server is unavailable

    Or:

    repadmin /showrepl

    As you can see, some domain controllers return an error “(1722) The RPC server is unavailable”. This means that some domain controllers are unable to replicate AD data (or just inactive) for a few days.

    Hint. There is a similar error RPC Server is Unavailable 0x800706BA, which is usually not associated with Active Directory domain controllers, and can occur on any Windows device. This needs to be fixed differently.

    Let’s consider the typical reasons for such an error:

    1. The domain controller is offline (or broken);
    2. Changes have been made to the network, or new Windows Defender Firewall rules have been added to block the AD replication traffic;
    3. Incorrect DNS configuration on domain controllers, or invalid DNS records;
    4. Poor network performance or high latency.

    Make sure the specified domain controllers are powered on and the following Windows services are running on them:

    • COM+ Event System;
    • Remote Procedure Call (RPC);
    • Active Directory Domain Services;
    • DNS Client;
    • DFS Replication;
    • Intersite Messaging;
    • Kerberos Key Distribution Center;
    • Security Accounts Manager;
    • Server;
    • Workstation;
    • Windows Time;
    • NETLOGON.

    Note. Now let’s say a few words about how replication works in an Active Directory domain. Replication (Synchronization) Active Directory is a fully automated process. Each domain controller periodically writes changes that occurred on other domain controllers (replication partners) to its local AD database (ntds.dit file). This means that to make changes from dc02 to dc01, it is required that dc02 should be the replication partner of the dc01.

    First of all, to verify that everything is fine with replication, you need to make sure the UNC path \\lon-dc01 (this is a problematic DC that returns error 1722 RPC server unavailable) is accessible, and the SYSVOL and NETLOGON folders are shared.

    1722 the rpc server is unavailable

    If they are not available, use the built-in ping and tracert tools to test basic network connectivity between the RPC client and server:

    ping lon-dc01

    tracert lon-dc01

    If the RPC client and server are on different networks, make sure traffic is properly routed between them. If they are in different physical locations, check if the link between them is up.

    Then check the permissions on the NETLOGON and SYSVOL folders, and check the availability of TCP 135/445 ports, maybe they are blocked by the firewall.

    Now check if TCP port 135 (RPC locator) on the domain controller returning error 1722 is in the listening state. You can do this using telnet or the PowerShell Test-NetConnection cmdlet:

    telnet lon-dc01 135

    Or:

    Test-NetConnection lon-dc01 –port 135

    A common source of such problems is the incorrect DNS configuration on the DC. Check if the correct DNS servers’ IP addresses are specified in the DC network connection settings. The primary address should be the address of another DC, and the secondary one is its own IP address.

    the rpc server is unavailable domain controller

    Check the DNS health on a problem DC with the dcdiag tool:

    DCDIAG /TEST:DNS /V /S:<ProblemDCName>

    Active Directory uses the dynamic range of TCP ports for replication. Windows Server 2008 R2 (and higher) uses the following port range for TCP Dynamic RPC — from 49152 to 65535.

    In some cases, an AD administrator can bind (restrict) Active Directory replication traffic on a specific port. In this case, the fixed RPC port number must be configured in the domain controller registry. For example, to bind the AD replication traffic on TCP port 5000 (0x1388), you need to change the registry key on the domain controller:

    [HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters]

    "TCP/IP Port"=dword:00001388

    If firewalls are used on your corporate network and the replication port AD is fixed, then replication won’t work on the newly promoted DC. This happens because the DC will try to replicate with the partner over a random port from the dynamic RPC range that is blocked by the firewalls.

    After you’ve fixed all problems, you can run the repadmin /replsummary command again, and check if the replication was successful. We also recommend initiating the AD replication manually and checking for errors. Make sure the dcdiag /a /q command doesn’t return errors.

    RPC Server is Unavailable (Error Code: 1722) on Windows 10/Windows Server

    On Windows, you may receive the error “1722 The RPC server is unavailable” if the local service/app on your computer cannot communicate with the service on the remote computer.

    Note. RPC is a widely used network communication protocol for exchanging data between local computers (RPC client) and remote computers (RPC server). If the RPC client is unable to connect to the RPC server, the “RPC Server Unavailable” error appears.

    In this case, first of all, you need to check if the services required for the RPC protocol are running on the remote computer:

    • Remote Procedure Call (RPC);
    • RPC Endpoint Mapper;
    • DCOM Server Process Launcher;
    • Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator service (is not typically running).

    Open the Service management console (services.msc), and check if the specified services are in the Running state. If not, start them manually.

    1722 rpc server is unavailable

    Also, some network applications may return error 1722 The RPC server is unavailable if TCP/IPv6 protocol is disabled on the computer.

    Open the properties of your network adapter in the control panel (Win + R > ncpa.cpl), and check if Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network are enabled.

    (1722) the rpc server is unavailable.

    Then clear the DNS cache with the command:

    ipconfig /flushdns

    Some RPC-based services don’t work correctly when IPv6 is disabled. Try to enable the IPv6 protocol in the properties of the network adapter. If the “RPC server is unavailable” error persists, try to disable the Teredo protocol through the registry. To do this, create a DWORD parameter with the name DisabledComponents and value 8 under the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters. Restart your computer and check RPC connectivity

    Also, RPC error 1722 can occur when you try to print a document on a remote computer with a shared network printer. In this case, you need to check if the remote computer is turned on, and the Print Spooler service is running on it. Open the services.msc console and start the Print Spooler service.

    rpc server is unavailable domain controller

    Troubleshooting RPC Connectivity Using Portquery

    The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) protocol is used in Windows to communicate between computers over a network. Many built-in Windows services use RPC (Distributed File System, AD Replication, DCOM services, MSSQL, Exchange, SCOM, SCCM, NLB, Microsoft Cluster Services, Certificate services, domain join, etc.).

    The RPC protocol is based on a client-server model. The RPC server accepts and processes connections using the RpcSs service. Windows dynamic ports are used to communicate between clients and the RCP server (TCP Range from 49152 and up to 65535).

    The static TCP port 135 is used as the starting point for RPC communication. This port is listened by the RPC Endpoint Mapper (RpcEptMapper) service. In a normal RPC session, the client connects to the RPC endpoint mapper service on the server on port 135 and requests the dynamic port number assigned to the particular service. RpcEptMapper responds with the IP address and service port number (a random dynamic port is assigned when the service starts).

    The most common causes of RPC errors are:

    • Disabled RPC service;
    • Name resolution errors (DNS or NetBIOS);
    • Network connectivity issues;
    • RPC Traffic blocking by firewall.

    You can use the portquery tools to diagnose the availability of the RPC and RPC Port Mapper services (PortQry Command Line Port Scanner).

    To check the availability of the RPC Port Mapper port on a remote server, run the command:

    portqry -n <problem_server> -e 135

    windows was unable to open service control manager database error 1722

    In this example, you can see that the RPC Port Mapper service is available on TCP port 135. The service also returned a list of running RPC endpoints and the ports assigned to them (in square brackets). Check if the service you are troubleshooting is on this list. Check if the port assigned to your TCP service is not blocked by firewalls between the client and server.

    portqry -n <problem_server> -p tcp -e 49666

      Cause

      RPC is an intermediate layer between the network transport and the application protocol. RPC itself has no special insight into failures but attempts to map lower layer protocol failures into an error at the RPC layer.

      RPC error 1722 / 0x6ba / RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE is logged when a lower layer protocol reports a connectivity failure. The common case is that the abstract TCP CONNECT operation failed. In the context of AD replication, the RPC client on the destination DC was not able to successfully connect to the RPC server on the source DC. Common causes for this are:

      1. Link local failure
      2. DHCP failure
      3. DNS failure
      4. WINS failure
      5. Routing failure (including blocked ports on firewalls)
      6. IPSec / Network authentication failures
      7. Resource limitations
      8. Higher layer protocol not running
      9. Higher layer protocol is returning this error

      Resolution

      Basic troubleshooting steps to identify the problem.

      Verify the startup value and service status are correct for RPC, RPC Locator, and Kerberos Key Distribution Center

      Verify the startup value and service status are correct for the Remote Procedure Call (RPC), Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator and Kerberos Key Distribution Center.

      The OS version will determine the correct values for the source and destination system that is logging the replication error. Use the following table to help validate the settings.

      Service NameWindows 2000Windows 2003 /R2Windows 2008Windows 2008 R2
      Remote Procedure Call (RPC)Started / AutomaticStarted / AutomaticStarted / AutomaticStarted / Automatic
      Remote Procedure Call (RPC) LocatorStarted / Automatic (Domain Controllers)

      Not started / Manual(Member Servers)
      Not started / ManualNot started / ManualNot started / Manual
      Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC)Started / Automatic (Domain Controllers)

      Not started / Disabled(Member Servers)
      Started / Automatic (Domain Controllers)

      Not started / Disabled(Member Servers)
      Started / Automatic (Domain Controllers)

      Not started / Disabled(Member Servers)
      Started / Automatic (Domain Controllers)

      Not started / Disabled(Member Servers)

      If you make any changes to match the settings above, restart the machine. Verify both the startup value and service status match the values documented in the table above.

      Verify the ClientProtocols key exists under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Rpc, and that it contains the correct default protocols

      Protocol NameTypeData Value
      ncacn_httpREG_SZrpcrt4.dll
      ncacn_ip_tcpREG_SZrpcrt4.dll
      ncacn_npREG_SZrpcrt4.dll
      ncacn_ip_udpREG_SZrpcrt4.dll

      If the ClientProtocols key or any of the four default values are missing, import the key from a known good server.

      Verify DNS is working

      DNS lookup failures are the cause of a large number of 1722 RPC errors when it comes to replication.

      There are a few tools to use to help identify DNS errors:

      • The command can validate DNS health of Windows 2000 Server (SP3 or later), Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008 family domain controllers. This test was first introduced with Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1.

        There are seven test groups for this command.

        • Authentication (Auth)

        • Basic ()

        • Records registration (RReg)

        • Dynamic update ()

        • Delegations (Del)

        • Forwarders/Root hints (Forw)

          Sample output:

          Summary of DNS test results:

          The summary provides remediation steps for the more common failures from this test.

          Explanation and additional options for this test can be found at Domain Controller Diagnostics Tool (dcdiag.exe).

      • is used to exercise the dc locator process. Thus tries to find the domain controller for the domain. Using the force flag forces domain controller location rather than using the cache. You can also specify options such as /gc or /pdc to locate a Global Catalog or a primary domain controller emulator. For finding the Global Catalog, you must specify a tree name, which is the DNS domain name of the root domain.

        Sample output:

      • Can be used with Windows 2003 and earlier versions to gather specific information for networking configuration and error. This tool takes some time to run when executing the switch.

        Sample output for the DNS test:

      • It's a simple quick test to validate the host record for a domain controller is resolving to the correct machine.

      • DNSLint is a Windows utility that helps you to diagnose common DNS name resolution issues. The output is an htm file with much information including:

        DNS server: localhost

        SOA record data from server:

      • Additional authoritative (NS) records from server:

        Alias (CNAME) and glue (A) records for forest GUIDs from server:

        • CNAME: 98d4aa0c-d8e2-499a-8f90-9730b0440d9b._msdcs.fabrikam.com

          • Alias:
          • Glue: <IP Adress>
        • CNAME: a2c5007f-7082-4adb-ba7d-a9c47db1efc3._msdcs.fabrikam.com

          • Alias:
          • Glue: <IP Address>

          For more information, see Description of the DNSLint utility.

      Verify network ports are not blocked by a firewall or third-party application listening on the required ports

      The endpoint mapper (listening on port 135) tells the client which randomly assigned port a service (FRS, AD replication, MAPI, and so on) is listening on.

      Application protocolProtocolPorts

      RPC randomly allocated high TCP ports¹TCP1024 - 5000
      49152 - 65535*

      This is the range in Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 2008 R2.

      Portqry can be used to identify if a port is blocked from a Dc when targeting another DC. It can be downloaded at PortQry Command Line Port Scanner Version 2.0.

      Example syntax:

        A graphical version of portqry, called Portqryui can be found at PortQryUI - User Interface for the PortQry Command Line Port Scanner.

        If the Dynamic Port range has ports being blocked, use the below links to configure a port range that is manageable for the customer.

        Additional important links for configuration and working with Firewalls and Domain Controllers:

        Bad NIC drivers

        See network card vendors or OEMs for the latest drivers.

        UDP fragmentation can cause replication errors that appear to have a source of RPC server is unavailable

        Event ID 40960 & 40961 errors with a source of LSASRV are common for this particular cause.

        For more information, see How to force Kerberos to use TCP instead of UDP in Windows.

        SMB signing mismatches between DCs

        Using Default Domain Controllers Policy to configure consistent settings for SMB Signing under the following section will help address this cause:

        • Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications (always) Disabled.
        • Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications (if server agrees) Enabled.
        • Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (always) Disabled.
        • Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (if client agrees) Enabled.

        The settings can be found under the following registry keys:

        • and

          • RequireSecuritySignature = always (0,disable, 1 enable).
          • EnableSecuritySignature = is server agrees (0,disable, 1 enable).

        Additional Troubleshooting:

        If the above don't provide a solution to the 1722, use the following Diagnostic logging to gather more information:
