"Graphics Device initialization failed for : d3d, sw" for JavaFX on IntelliJ IDEA Windows

While trying to run a simple JavaFX program on IntelliJ IDEA, I kept getting a long line of errors in the console that started with "Graphics Device initialization failed for : d3d, sw".

I'm certain I correctly used the openjfx libraries.

I've tried using Java Versions 11.0.4 and 12.0.1 for the project as well as JavaFX 11.0.3 and JavaFX 12.0.1. I had no idea if this would make a difference, but it still results in the same errors.

I looked up some information about "d3d," and according to a Steam Support page: "D3D errors typically occur if you are running the game at settings which your machine does not adequately support or if you are running outdated video drivers."

Is there a way to fix this, or is my hardware simply out of date?

    unable to initialize direct3d error

Direct3D, part of DirectX, is a graphics API valve for Windows that is used for final rendering of 3D graphics in PC applications or games. Enable Service Graphs In general, a common cause of error when creating d3d devices is that your graphics services are not actually working. Initialization failure in a meaningful video game can mean anything, because the explanation is always too vague. It can be anything from old drivers to missing important files, but we decided to collect all known working devices and compile them into one article for you!

Solution 1: Force The Game To Use DirectX11

DirectX errors that you see when you try to launch the game can simply be fixed by making the game use DirectX11 instead of DirectX9, which should be the default. The trouble is that various exclusive games use methods for this optimization.

Sometimes you need to change the archive configuration in blocksometimes it’s easy to fix it through the game settings, but here we present you with an almost universal method that can be easily used for almost any new game

    1. Accessing the problematic game installation file. If you didn’t do any overrides during installation, it should show up as Local Disk >> Program Files. If
    2. But if you have a desktop shortcut for the game, you can simply right-click on it and select “Open launch location” from the context menu.
  • Locate the regular D3d9 .dll file in the file, right-click it and select the Rename it out of context option. You are renaming it to d3d9.old.dll as a case of action, trouble.
  • Hobby should now automatically switch to DirectX11 when it’s available (and available with Vista and earlier).
  • Solution 4: Update Your Graphics Card Drivers

This is a really important decision if you really want to get this problem right as DirectX and Direct3D are closely related to your graphics card. The draw card is needed bylast runners if selectors want to run features available in newer games and utility reported by DirectX.

    Question

Issue: How to fix Failed to initialize Direct3D error on Windows 10?

Hi, I am currently running Windows 10, and whenever I want to start a video game, I get the following message: Failed to initialize Direct3D. Make sure you have at least DirectX 9.0c installed, have drivers for your graphics card and have not disabled 3D acceleration in display settings. InitializeEngineGraphics failed.” I am not sure how to fix this? Hope that somebody can help me. Thanks for advice.

    Solved Answer

Direct3D is a graphics application programming interface (API)[1] designed for Windows operating systems. The app is part of DirectX and is used to render 3D graphics in programs which require intense graphics processing, such as HD video rendering or video games. The API works closely with the GPU to give the best results. Unfortunately, problems with Direct3D arise which might result in “Failed to initialize Direct3D” error.

Many reports were coming from multiple users complaining about the Direct3D error. It appears during startup of the application and affects numerous games, including Dungeons and Dragons,[2] Command and Conquer, RIFT and many others. It is incredibly annoying for users, as they want to dig into their favorite game as soon as possible.

The truth is, the error is not connected to the actual game (regardless of which one). Errors relating to Direct3D may be initiated because of the following issues:

    • Problems with hardware
    • Incorrectly installed application
    • Old DirectX version
    • Visual C++[3] problems
    • Corrupt or outdated drivers
    • Due to some virtualization apps, etc.

Nevertheless, if these error pop continually you should pay close attention to other symptoms, such as slow computer performance, apps crashing, random freezes, the intensive workload of CPU/GPU, and so on. In this case, your machine may be infected with malware (such as trojan horse[4] or a worm). Thus, to make sure that it is not the virus causing several error messages, make sure to scan your machine with ReimageMac Washing Machine X9.

Regardless of what is the cause of the problem, let's jump “Failed to initialize Direct3D” error fix – our team prepared several solution methods that could help you.
