How to Fix the Canon B200 Printer Error

One of the most feared Canon printer errors is B200, indicating a potentially catastrophic error with the device. Don't junk it immediately, though. Printers are expensive, and there are a few troubleshooting steps you can take before you shop for a new printer.

Causes of the Canon B200 Error

The B200 error indicates a faulty print head at its most basic level. A print head is a part that distributes the ink from the cartridges onto the paper, meaning it's one of the most critical aspects of the entire printer. Print heads can be problematic, especially on cheaper printers.

How to Fix the Canon B200 Error

There are several things you can do to fix a faulty print head and eliminate the B200 error. Try some of the below suggestions before you replace the entire device.

  1. Reset the printer. Unplug it and leave it disconnected for at least 30 minutes. A good, long reset allows the printer to cool down and restore everything to its proper position before turning the device back on.

  2. Remove any obstructions. There's a possibility something is disrupting the connection to the printer head. Open the printer's door, carefully disconnect the print head, and lift it out of the device. Reseat it and see if that fixes the issue.

There's usually a lever on the printer head. Press the lever to remove the printer head.

  3. Clean the printer head. Use the device's maintenance options to run its cleaning cycle. It's handy if the printer head is clogged.

  4. Manually clean the print head. Use pure alcohol or a non-oil-based cleaneron the print head's gold contacts. Use a microfiber cloth to rub the cleaner onto the contacts, then let it dry completely before reconnecting.

The print head is very fragile, so handle it with care.

  5. Remove old ink. There may be hardened ink trapped inside the print head. Run it under hot tap water until the water comes out clean. Dab it dry with a paper towel, then reinsert the head into the printer.

  6. Re-install the printer drivers. Find your device on the official Canon support page and follow the directions for updating the drivers.

  7. Try a new ink cartridge. Faulty cartridges rarely trigger the B200 error, but it can happen. Refer to the user manual for this process regarding your specific device.

  8. If none of the above methods work, the B200 error is probably accurate. It's time to shop for a new printer.

While it's possible to find the part you need and install it, the cost of a new print head is about the same as buying an entirely new printer.

Canon B200 Error

The dreaded B200 Error on your Canon Printer usually indicates that the print head has died! Before you go trashing the printer or buying a new one try some of the following suggestions.
1. Remove all ink cartridges and re install new ones.
2. Remove Print Head and thoroughly clean all of the gold contacts on the print head itself. When re installing the print head make sure that the ribbon cable connector is firmly plugged in to the print head itself (this usually applies to older models).
3. When the print head is out thoroughly clean it by flushing all ink out under the hot water tap. This video may help - Print head Cleaning
4. Next method to try is to reload the printers drivers as the B200 error code can be caused in some cases by a corrupted Driver.
5. Try turning the printer off and unplugging it at the wall for at least 2 hours. Sometimes this can work.
6. If all else fails please follow the instructions on this video.
7. Purchase a new Print Head from canon and install it yourself. (this is not recommended as it is usually not much more expensive to buy a new printer).

The image to the left indicates the cleaning of the contacts on the print head itself. These need to be cleaned thoroughly with either pure alcohol or a non oily cleaning fluid. If these contacts are dirty it can cause the B200 error to occur.

When cleaning the print head be very careful as the bottom of the print head is very delicate and will not tolerate rough treatment. This picture shows the actual part of the print head were the ink is sprayed from. (between his thumb and fore finger).

The next picture to the left indicates the correct method to clean a print head. Simply hold it under a hot water tap and keep the water flowing through until the water comes out fully clean.

This will remove any hardened ink which has solidified inside of the print head itself.

The print head can be dried after by using a hair drier or simply by carefully dabbing it with a lint free cloth or paper towel.

Canon B200 Error video Fix

If you would like a more in depth look at how to fix the B200 error then take a look at the following video. ( Just go with the subtitles ! )

My personal thoughts

Having been in the print consumables industry since 2007 and being a huge fan of the Canon inkjet range of printers I must say that the chances of actually fixing a Canon printhead is very slim. On some occasions we have certainly manged to revive printers using the above methods however the percentage of successes are small.

My background is in electronics so I kinda know the effect that constant temperature variations have on any electronic piece of equipment. The thermal printhead used in Canon printers uses a myriad of small resistors which are constantly heating up to spit the ink out and then turning off and cooling down again. After a couple of years of this often the minute resistors inside the head simply die or open circuit.

Once this occurs then you end up with one of the dreaded B200, U052, U054 etc error messages. Honestly folks if you get one of these don't spend hours trying to fix it, quickly try the above solutions and if they don't remove the error message then grab it by the 240 cord and launch it out the door!

What about replacing the printhead?

Many folks get attached to their printer and even when it's near death they simply don't want to part with it. Many are not tech savvy and they have spent several years simply working out how to use the thing. Finally they get the hang of printing when the dreaded printhead error occurs and devastates them.

Many older folks don't care how much it's gonna cost to fix or replace the printhead and even if they gotta mortgage their house to them it seems a better alternative than to have to purchase some new fandango printer and spend another couple of years learning to operate the thing.

Seriously folks the best alternative is to simply update to a new Canon printer as they are not so much different to use than your current printer. Instillation is very simple and even though you may be apprehensive once you take the plunge you will soon master the operation of the new printer.

Replacing the printhead should not even be a consideration. They are expensive, hard to obtain and even if you do repair the printer chances are that a 2 year old or more printer will simply develop another problem before too long. Often either the plastic drive gear will chew out, the ink waste pad will fill up or some other part of the printer will die.

How to fix error B200 on canon Printers

MAJ11/06/17

Error B200means the printhead voltage or temperature is not normal. The Printhead could be defective.... but first, try these solutions below:

Solution 1:
  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer.
  • Wait 1 hour.
  • Connect the power cable

Solution 2:
  • Check and Clean Head contact pin condition of the carriage unit
  • Check Cable connection especially the carriage FFC

Solution 3:
  • Turn off the power
  • Open the panel
  • Turn on the power
  • Wait for print carriage to start moving to the left.
  • Let it go past half way
  • Before print carriage reaches left hand side shut the cover.
  • Leave the Printer turned on

Solution 4:
  • Unplug the power cable.
  • Open the printer
  • Push the whole print head mechanic to the center
  • While the printer still open, plug the power and turn it ON.
  • When the printhead still moving and is going to the very LEFT, close the cover.
  • Wait until its boot up.

Solution 4a:
  • Take out all of the ink cartridges
  • Lift up the grey bar by where the ink goes
  • Left the print head in the middle of the printer all while the printer was off.

Solution 4b(thank you Jeremy):
  • Clean the plastic head primers/cleaners themselves on the printer (the far right)

Solution 4c(thank you Rhiann):
  • Turn off the printer
  • Open the cover
  • Turn on the printer
  • Wait for print carriage to start moving to the left and let it go past half way
  • Before print carriage reaches left hand side (but after going halfway across) shut the cover.
  • Leave the Printer turned on.

Solution 4d: (thank you John Wittman)
  • My Canon MX860 locked up with the B200 error when I continued printing without black ink. I removed printhead as described elsewhere and carefully flushed with hot tap water until no further ink waste was present. Reinstalled, but this did not resolve the B200 message and lockout.
  • Removed printhead again and this time removed 2 small screws (with jeweler's scredriver) on printhead to dimantle it. Use care to protect the ribbon cable. Do not try to remove this cable. You will see a complex rubber gasket. Remove this and clean with hot water. Set aside.
  • With screws removed, this will give access for more cleaning of the ink passages. Used hot water, then isopropal alcohol to wash, and finally a small (1/4") soft rubber tube to gently blow out water/alcohol from the printhead body. Be careful to not touch or push on the ink jets (little metal strips - large set for color; second set for black printing). Dried parts and reassembled. Carefully replace the gasket so that it fits over the plastic tips of the several ink ports.
  • Error B200 has disappeared
  • Ran printer maintenance from the PC: head deep cleaning, regular cleaning 3 times and head alignment check. Gradually print quality has been restored as ink has flowed into the printhead cavity and to the ink jets.

Solution 4b(thank you Jeremy):

Solution 4c(thank you Rhiann):

I removed printhead as described elsewhere and carefully flushed with hot tap water until no further ink waste was present, canon 4700 error b200.
Be careful to not touch or push on the ink jets (little metal strips - large set for color; second set for black printing), canon 4700 error b200.
