authentication token manipulation error ubuntu 10.04

Your system is definitely broken, most likely beyond repair. It would be best to backup all data and reinstall it. Note that Kali Linux is not meant to be. I get passwd: Authentication token manipulation error instead. Does not want to change it. – demongolem. Dec 22, 2017 at 14:36. Add. I've been battling my Toshiba satellite with Kali Linux and the 2017 ISO file installed. After trying to update and upgrade the system, it crashed.

Ubuntu 18.04 - Root Şifre Sıfırlama Authentication token manipulation error hatası çözümü

Authentication token manipulation error

One of my friend forgot his ubuntu password and i tried to fix it by going to recovery mode dropping into root shell and resetting the password for the user

[email protected]:~# passwd username Enter new UNIX password: Retype new UNIX password: passwd: Authentication token manipulation error passwd: password unchanged

But this time it didn’t work as usual. It showed an error “Authentication token manipulation error”.
I tried googling an found that the file system is not mounted with read/write permission.
From root shell remount file system with read/write permission.

mount -rw -o remount /

Then try changing the password using

passwd username

Some times it may may throw the same error again, then delete the password for the user from /etc/shadow file using the fllowing command

sudo passwd -d username

Replace username with your’s. Then again change the password using

passwd username

Happy Hacking 🙂

Recently I was trying out a boot disk I had made, and basically, I switched it off several times due to it booting the completely wrong kernel. Now, I'm getting to the stage "Checking File systems" and then comes up [Failed]. I then get a message saying Reboot required, and that it will reboot in 15 seconds, just a few seconds before it reboots I get "/dev/shm not mounted, /dev busy" or something similar.

I've booted up my sysresccd, ran "fsck.ext4 -fcv /dev/sda2" to force a check and scan for any bad blocks, it came up clean, then I rebooted and got the same error, so I copied the kernel and system.map over to /boot to make sure there's no corruption and reinstalled initscripts and util-linux-ng, rebooted, same error.Tried different kernels, I've checked fstab and menu.lst, no problems there, so I still don't get why I still get the same problem.

RIdiculously misleading error message errore 868 vpn windows passwd

In Ubuntu server 10.04 LTS, I typed passwd to change my password and accidentally typed the new password in response to the prompt for the current password. Instead of saying "incorrect password" or something equally reasonable, which would have caused me to smack my forehead and do it right the next time, I got the insane response "passwd: Authentication token manipulation error"! This caused me to go down a rathole for fifteen minutes, reading many pages with many possible reasons for this error, none of which were "you mistyped your original password".

This is a real user-interface FAIL and is certainly a regression in understandability. It's obviously been there for a while; 9.04 does this, although I note that Hoary 5.04 (yes, I still have a machine that old) says "passwd: Authentication failure" instead, which, authentication token manipulation error ubuntu 10.04 still not exactly user-friendly, at least puts "authentication" and "failure" -and nothing else- into the raised exception class einouterror error 103 to give people half a clue that maybe they mistyped something. (It's still not an error message users should see, compared to "incorrect password".) But the current error message is so obfuscated ("token manipulation error"---wtf is -that-?) that it's absolutely no help at all---either to a user trying to figure out what's going on, -or- to Google, considering how many other scenarios cause it to spit out that error message.

Yuck.

Mohammedz.com

Ok…. after searching for over an hour and trying different solutions, including what is listed in this nice blog entry… here is what worked for me.

The important thing to realize is that the error reporting mechanism is buggy: lots of different situations lead to this error message, each with their own reasons. This is why there are so many replies on the net saying “Here’s what to do…”.

The way to isolate your particular problem is the following:

1. Open a terminal window as root, and run “tail -f /var/log/auth.log”. This is absolutely critical, as PAM might give error symbol grub_puts_ not found answer right there.

2. Try to change the password, or try to login remotely using “ssh -l theuserinquestion localhost”. You should see activity in the logfile that you are watching using tail.

Now the next step is entirely situation specific: your problem may vary from mine. In my case, authentication token manipulation error ubuntu 10.04, I found out that I had greedily downloaded a whole bunch of packages onto my machine (Ubuntu 10.04), and some of those packages related to authentication (LDAP, Kerberos, authentication token manipulation error ubuntu 10.04, Winbind). But I only wanted Unix authentication… and there’s the problem. And watching auth.log made it clear: the system was trying to authenticate first off of LDAP and so on.

For me, the fix was to run a program called “pam-auth-update” which presents a nice single screen asking you “Hey dude, what do you want to use to authenticate?”… just choose Unix and deselect LDAP, Kerberos, and Winbind, and I was set.

Again, YOUR particular problem might be different – for example, maybe you DO want LDAP, but in your LDAP server you don’t have that user set up properly… so then YOUR solution is different. Hopefully, you get the picture now, and have a general way to solve the problem.

Mohammed, I don’t have a blog, so I just picked you since your blog was the second hit for the error message on Google, and I’m too lazy to register in the forums.

Ubuntu :: Software Center Authentication Lock?

Jan 15, 2011

I have a problem with the ubuntu software center. I can't get authentication to work to install anything. The error I get is:Previous Installation hasn't been completedThe installation could have failed because of an error in the corresponding software package or it was cancelled in an unfriendly way. You have to repair this before you can install or remove any further software.I have no idea how to "repair this". I was trying to install XML copy editor and something happened during installation. Since then I rebooted but nothing seems to fix the error. I looked through the installed software and couldn't find program.I looked for some script solutions but they were for specific programs, not for the software center itself

Can I change the Caps Lock key to Control and still keep the on/off nature of Caps Lock? I've checked into using xmodmap and seem to have hit a dead end. Many people want to swap them, but they also want to swap the way they work. I'd rather keep my new Control key as an on/off switch for Control.

General :: /dev/shm Not Mounted /dev Busy

Mar 2, 2010

General :: MySQL And Apache Configuration For Busy Server?

Mar 4, 2011

I need to tune the mysql and apache server for the comparatively busy webserver. My scenario is like this.

1. The Web request is around 2000 request at a time or more.
2. Each web request will generate one mysql query.
3. The query to database is all read.
4. This server load will be at peak for around 3-4 hours after that the load will subside. As the task will be published, around 300,000 will be viewing the page.

5 quad servers are deployed, load is balanced via DNS but performance is not as expected. Centos 5.5 is used as OS. Top command shows The mysql process is around 185%!

Ubuntu :: Sudo-apt Get Not Working - Not Get Lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock Resource Temporarily Unavailable

Jun 12, 2011

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop. I was following some of the steps here..[url]

The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.

The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'

I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.

Ubuntu :: Num Lock Doesn't Work / When Pressing Num Lock And Typing Numbers, Nothing Happens?

Jun 23, 2010

I'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.

I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.

Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.
