with my CPU fan, comp specs: Mobo - Asus P8Z68 V LX processor - i5 upon boot up i sometimes get the "CPU fan error F1" but not all. Hi, just did my first out-of-case, no-drives POST test, all is fine, yippee, except saw a no cpu fan error, though I've got my CoolerMaster hyper 212 fans. This has happened to me on my Asus p8z68 mobo. You just need to lower the warning rpm for cpu fan (in the BIOS). My cpu fan was spinning at.

I recently updated the bios on my motherboard (ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3) and afterwards the computer wouldn't boot to Windows because of a CPU fan error. This was retified after the fan pin connector was moved from the CPU_OPT socket to the CPU_FAN connector. The computer now works again but now after shutdown from Windows, fans continue to spin (the back chassis fan at least, I haven't been able to check the others yet), and only a hard shutdown afterwards can stop this.

I've also given Windows permission to switch off the 1394 controller after shutdown, but this hasn't changed anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you. :)

  • So you physically removed a fan pin off the motherboard because of a bad BIOS update?

  • Possibly choose Clear CMOS/Reset to defaults in the bios. Sometimes needed to fix odd issues.

    How long have you left the system after power off? I'm wondering if it's a thermal regulation option. Spin the fans until the temperature drops below a certain level.

  • My suggestions: 

    1.  As M Boyle mentioned, try resetting to defaults.

    2.  Try a different BIOS version.  Instead of say, Dell's A11, try A10, for example.  

    3.  I've seen malfunctioning power supplies do this.  Switch it out and see if that fixes it.  

    My gut says reflash the BIOS, though.  It's actually a fairly well known issue with ASUS boards.  A simple Google search confirmed it for me.

  • unplug from the wall and hold power button for 10 seconds then keep holding power button and plug back into wall

    No, he moved the fan connector to a different port on the MB.  Based on his post it was in the wrong place and is now connected correctly.

  • Some motherboards do this by design, as do some cars - the fans run for a few minutes after shutdown to make sure everything is cool enough.

  • Your primary CPU fan should always be on the CPU_FAN header. Your CPU_OPT header is for an optional CPU fan, like an aftermarket cooler that has two fans. Reset your BIOS to factory and start there.

  • Yeah, I figured the CPU fan was in the wrong header when "CPU fan error!" appeared on the screen after updating the BIOS. I guess the old BIOS version didn't really mind.

  • Also, go into the "Advanced BIOS". Look at your Fans section. set all those to auto (everything). No custom RPMs, not custom voltages.
