an error occurred while mounting media ubuntu

I try to fix it with with Gparted, ntfs-3g, pmount, but this programs can't find the external HDD. But when I boot put the USB drive with Ubuntu. You may receive the following error when you attempt to mount USB stick: mount: /mnt/sda: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1. sprers.eu › Windows 10 › Windows 10 Troubleshooting.

An error occurred while mounting media ubuntu - share

I have several partition on the hard disk of my laptop. Some of them are NTFS and some Ext4. I prefer to auto-mount all the partitions at startup. It saves me trouble and time. I prefer to auto-mount the partition by editing the fstab. This was the first time I was trying to automount an Ext4 partition by editing the fstab. But it gave me the following error when I tried to mount the partition:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda7,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error

Troubleshoot Linux VM starting issues due to fstab errors

You can't connect to an Azure Linux Virtual Machine (VM) by using a Secure Shell (SSH) connection. When you run the Boot Diagnostics feature on the Azure portal, you see log entries that resemble the following examples:

Examples

The following are examples of possible errors.

Example 1: A disk is mounted by the SCSI ID instead of the universally unique identifier (UUID)

Example 2: An unattached device is missing on CentOS

Example 3: A VM cannot start because of an fstab misconfiguration or because the disk is no longer attached

Example 4: A serial log entry shows an incorrect UUID

This problem may occur if the file systems table (fstab) syntax is incorrect or if a required data disk that is mapped to an entry in the "/etc/fstab" file is not attached to the VM.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, start the VM in emergency mode by using the serial console for Azure Virtual Machines. Then use the tool to repair the file system. If the serial console isn't enabled on your VM, go to the Repair the VM offline section.

Use the serial console

Using Single User Mode

  1. Connect to the serial console.

  2. Use serial console to take single user mode single user mode

  3. Once the vm has booted into single user mode. Use your favorite text editor to open the fstab file.

  4. Review the listed file systems. Each line in the fstab file indicates a file system that is mounted when the VM starts. For more information about the syntax of the fstab file, run the man fstab command. To troubleshoot a start failure, review each line to make sure that it's correct in both structure and content.

    Note

    • Fields on each line are separated by tabs or spaces. Blank lines are ignored. Lines that have a number sign (#) as the first character are comments. Commented lines can remain in the fstab file, but they won't be processed. We recommend that you comment fstab lines that you're unsure about instead of removing the lines.
    • For the VM to recover and start, the file system partitions should be the only required partitions. The VM may experience application errors about additional commented partitions. However, the VM should start without the additional partitions. You can later uncomment any commented lines.
    • We recommend that you mount data disks on Azure VMs by using the UUID of the file system partition. For example, run the following command:
    • To determine the UUID of the file system, run the blkid command. For more information about the syntax, run the man blkid command.
    • The nofail option helps make sure that the VM starts even if the file system is corrupted or the file system doesn't exist at startup. We recommend that you use the nofail option in the fstab file to enable startup to continue after errors occur in partitions that are not required for the VM to start.
  5. Change or comment out any incorrect or unnecessary lines in the fstab file to enable the VM to start correctly.

  6. Save the changes to the fstab file.

  7. Reboot the vm using the below command.

Note

You can also use "ctrl+x" command which would also reboot the vm.

  1. If the entries comment or fix was successful, the system should reach a bash prompt in the portal. Check whether you can connect to the VM.

Using Root Password

  1. Connect to the serial console.

  2. Sign-in to the system by using a local user and password.

    Note

You can't use an SSH key to sign in to the system in the serial console.

  3. Look for the error that indicates that the disk wasn't mounted. In the following example, the system was trying to attach a disk that was no longer present:

  4. Connect to the VM by using the root password (Red Hat-based VMs).

  5. Use your favorite text editor to open the fstab file. After the disk is mounted, run the following command for Nano:

  6. Review the listed file systems. Each line in the fstab file indicates a file system that is mounted when the VM starts. For more information about the syntax of the fstab file, run the man fstab command. To troubleshoot a start failure, review each line to make sure that it's correct in both structure and content.

We recommend that you use the nofail option in the fstab file to enable startup to continue after errors occur in partitions that are not required for the VM to start.
  7. Change or comment out any incorrect or unnecessary lines in the fstab file to enable the VM to start correctly.

  8. Save the changes to the fstab file.

  9. Restart the virtual machine.

  10. If the entries comment or fix was successful, the system should reach a bash prompt in the portal. Check whether you can connect to the VM.

  11. Check your mount points when you test any fstab change by running the mount –a command. If there are no errors, your mount points should be good.

Repair the VM offline

  1. Attach the system disk of the VM as a data disk to a recovery VM (any working Linux VM). To do this, you can use CLI commands or you can automate setting up the recovery VM using the VM repair commands.

  2. After you mount the system disk as a data disk on the recovery VM, back up the fstab file before you make changes, and then follow the next steps to correct the fstab file.

  3. Look for the error that indicates the disk wasn't mounted. In the following example, the system was trying to attach a disk that was no longer present:

  4. Connect to the VM by using the root password (Red Hat-based VMs).

  5. Use your favorite text editor to open the fstab file. After the disk is mounted, run the following command for Nano. Make sure that you're working on the fstab file that is located on the mounted disk and not the fstab file that's on the rescue VM.

Notice that the disk that you want to recover is now mounted on a new VM. Although the UUIDs should be consistent, the device partition IDs (for example, "/dev/sda1") are different on this VM. The file system partitions of the original failing VM that are located on a non-system VHD are not available to the recovery VM using CLI commands.
    • The nofail option helps make sure that the VM starts even if the file system is corrupted or the file system doesn't exist at startup. We recommend that you use the nofail option in the fstab file to enable startup to continue after errors occur in partitions that are not required for the VM to start.
  7. Change or comment out any incorrect or unnecessary lines in the fstab file to enable the VM to start correctly.

  8. Save the changes to the fstab file.

  9. Restart the virtual machine or rebuild the original VM.

  10. If the entries comment or fix was successful, the system should reach a bash prompt in the portal. Check whether you can connect to the VM.

  11. Check your mount points when you test any fstab change by running the mount –a command. If there are no errors, your mount points should be good.

  12. Unmount and detach the original virtual hard disk, and then create a VM from the original system disk. To do this, you can use CLI commands or the VM repair commands if you used them to create the recovery VM.

  13. After you create the VM again and you can connect to it through SSH, take the following actions:

    • Review any of the fstab lines that were changed or commented out during the recovery.
    • Make sure that you're using UUID and the nofail option appropriately.
    • Test any fstab changes before you restart the VM. To do this, use the following command:
    • Create an additional copy of the corrected fstab file for use in future recovery scenarios.

I found a solution that worked for me. Try uninstalling Parallels Tools from this virtual machine. To do this, select the appropriate Virtual Machine menu item while your virtual machine is running and choose Reinstall ParallelsTools. … When the ISO has finished installing and running the program, select the uninstall option so you can update them. Restart the installation of the virtual machine and therefore every new update in Ubuntu if completed.

Now update again and you are no more. He doesn’t want to have any installation issues anymore, it’s worth noting that Parallels tools still don’t support , so you will definitely have to drop that until Parallels becomes a partner!

    Hi

My computer was just working fine until I tried to install the new ubuntu() while remaining the os's i already have.

I have Ubuntu & win7, & they are installed on my HDD.

I have 4 HDD. my old ubuntu() is installed in a separated HDD & i have 2 other HDD for data & files(not system files). and the last HDD i had separated to partitions, & one of its partition has Win7.

the new installation of the ubuntu(), i installed it in the win 7 Hdd(which have multiple partitions).

the problem occurred now. after I have installed it, when i tried to run my computer, the boot loader won't start. I heard that i should use 'boot-repair' to fix the grub, & it did fix it but the Win7 is now not working & not shown in the boot loader.

my problem is not here only, now when i tried to run my computer, i can't access & see one of my HDD(that have data files only), it doesn't show.

also, when the computer is running(while booting), this msg appear 'an error occurred while mounting /media/ my HDD name , press s to continue or m to manual recovery'.

    Note:
the drive that shown in the booting screen(unable to mount), this is the same drive that i can't access it when the computer start.

how can i fix the problem ???

    Thanks alot

I thing the problem is from the 'fstab' , since the problem that i'm facing it right now(mounting error) is for the 3 partitions. 2 of them, i have deleted them & combine them in one new partition(merging them together), & the last one i didn't touch anything with it.

but some one told them the problem is may from the 'fstab' since it may occur from the numbering of the partitions since they have changed right now, & the fstab may(for sure; from the problem that occurred) have the old list.

but i don't know if from it the problem or not..

    any help ??

    thanks

While using computers, users continuously play around with the file systems to manage their data. They create new directories, create new folders, or add another file system to increase space or divide the data into the new files for their convenience.

Mostly, this is done using the GUI with new directories and folders created instantly with a few clicks of the mouse. However, there are a few people who like to do the same using the CLI. They attempt to make new directories and attach file systems to their existing ones using commands typed in a command window.

While this may sound interesting, the probability of getting errors and running into different problems is much higher than doing it through the GUI. One of the common errors that users can come across is the “mount point does not exist” error.

The mount point is an accessible directory of the previously existing file system with which you attach the new file system. The mount point is the root directory of the new file system, and the original content of that directory becomes inaccessible till the new file system is unmounted.

The system itself generally designates the mount points. These directories are already listed in the /etc/fstab directory. Users can also designate mount points themselves by using one of the directories listed in /etc/fstab. The names of these directories can also be edited using text editor software.

Now, the “mount point does not exist” multiple reasons can cause an error. You make even the tiniest of mistakes, and you can’t mount new file systems on your computer. It is important that you perform each and every step of the process diligently. There are many things that are to be considered while attempting to mount a new file system.

If you are a Linux user and you want to mount a new file system on your computer, this article will help you achieve that as we will be going through the steps, one can do that. Not only that, but we will also discuss how to mount USBs on your computer.

Listing Mounted Files on Your Linux System

For both mounting and unmounting, there are inbuilt commands in Linux that you can use, an error occurred while mounting media ubuntu. For mounting and to perform tasks related to mounting, you use the $mount command, and for unmounting, the $unmount command can be used.

Before learning how to mount file systems, let’s look at how you can get to know the already mounted file systems on our computer. This can be done using the $mount command. Just simply open your command terminal and type in the following command.

    $ mount

You can see all the default file systems mounted on your computer in your output. The output should look something similar to this.

In case you want to look at specific file systems an error occurred while mounting media ubuntu on your computer, it is possible to utilize the -t operator with $mount and specify the file system.

    $ mount-t ext4

The above command will display all the files of ext4 type.

Mounting Files on Your Linux System

The $mount command is to be executed to mount files on your computer, as shown below.

    $ sudomount device name directory

There is the provision of different operators that you can use with $mount, such as -t mentioned before. The operators are to be added in the syntax, as shown below.

$ sudomount operators device name directory

For example, use the following command if you want to mount a device named /dev/sdb1 on the directory /mnt/media.

    $ sudomount/dev/sdb1 /mnt/media

Upon successful execution of the command, /mnt/media will be the root directory of /dev/sdb1.

$mount is programmed to detect the common file systems, and the mounting process is completed without specifying file systems such as “xfs” or “ext4”. The user needs to specify other file systems in order to effectively mount the new file system or device. This is done using the -t operator.

    $ sudomount-t device name directory

Mounting Files Using the /etc/fstb Directory

As discussed before, the /etc/fstb directory handles the file system mounting operation by checking whether the file system mentioned in the command is compatible or not. If a user chooses to mention either the device name or directory, /etc/fstb comes in to verify the file systems. If the mentioned system is in its list, mounting is successful.

$ sudomount device name or directory.

Mounting a USB to Your Computer

Usually, a USB is mounted directly without any need for typing commands. You stick it in the port, and you are able to access its contents. If you want to do it manually by typing commands, follow these steps.

    Open the command terminal.

Once opened, the first thing you need to do is to make a directory.

    $ sudomkdir-p directory name

You can select an arbitrary directory name for your USB.

After creating the directory, use the following command to know the USB device&#;s name and its file system type.

    $ sudofdisk-l

Once you know the name, use the following command as a template.

$ sudomount device name <name of the created directory.>

These are the steps you need to follow to successfully mount a USB on your computer.

    Conclusion

This was a guide on how to successfully mount a new device or a file system on your computer and so that you can correct any mistakes you made while typing commands for mounting a system of your choice. We discussed the $mount command and how to accurately use it to perform the tasks successfully. We hope that we were able to help you out and if we were, please let us know in the comments.

In some cases useful info is found in syslog &#; try

    Fixing disk mount error

The problematic part was pointed by dmesg, an error occurred while mounting media ubuntu. It had trouble with uid=. Actually I had edited the /etc/fstab file to include the following line to auto-mount the Ext4 partition:

I changed it with the line given below to remove the troublesome &#;uid=&#;:

I found a solution that worked for me. Try uninstalling Parallels Tools from this virtual machine. To do this, select the appropriate Virtual Machine menu item while your virtual machine is running and choose Reinstall ParallelsTools. … When the ISO has finished installing and running the program, select the uninstall option so you can update them. Restart the installation of the virtual machine and therefore every new update in Ubuntu if completed.

Now update again and you are no more. He doesn’t want to have any installation issues anymore, it’s worth noting that Parallels tools still don’t supportso you will definitely have to drop runtime error 429 windows 7 until Parallels becomes a partner!
