Windows Server: Active Directory database repair after Domain Controller failure

This article addresses Active Directory Repair on Windows Server operating systems.

Issue:

Upon startup, a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory domain controller (DC) displays a message prior to the login prompt, similar to this:

Application popup: lsass.exe - System Error : Security Accounts Manager initialization failed because of the following error: Directory Service cannot start. Error Status: 0xc00002e1. Please click OK to shutdown this system and reboot into Directory Services Restore Mode, check the event log for more detailed information.

The Active Directory (AD) database is corrupt; the server cannot authenticate AD domain members and will not boot into normal mode.

Solution:

In the absence of a recent systems state backup, the following steps may be used as an AD recovery attempt.

1. Restart the DC in Directory Services Restore Mode (DSRM).

    a.  On server startup, press F8 after the system BIOS and hardware service (e.g. PERC, iDRAC) initializations are complete.

    b.  From the boot menu, select 'Directory Services Restore Mode' and press Enter.

2. From the Windows Start button select Run and type 'cmd' to open a command prompt.

Type 'ESENTUTL /g C:\windows\NTDS\ntds.dit /!10240 /8 /o' and press Enter to do the initial integrity check.

SLN289101_en_US__1W_ad__repair1_JM_V2

In cases of database inconsistencies an error message, e.g.  'results CORRUPTED, -1206' will be returned.

3. Next, type 'NTDSUTIL' and press Enter.  This launches the NTDS tools set.

    a.  At the prompt type 'Files' and press Enter to get to the NTDS file management utility

    b.  At the file maintenance: prompt type 'info' and press Enter to show locations of all AD database-related files.

SLN289101_en_US__2W_ad__repair2_JM_V1

4. At the file maintenance: prompt type 'Recover' and press Enter.  This will initiate a 'soft' recovery of the AD database.

SLN289101_en_US__3W_ad__repair3_JM_V1

Note: With rare exception, this step is not sufficient in addressing the problem; it is, primarily, a preliminary step in diagnosing the depth of the issue.

Enter 'quit' at each prompt until returned to the Command (C:\<path>) prompt.

5. From the Command prompt type 'ESENTUTL /ml c:\windows\ntds\edb' to check the AD Database log files.

SLN289101_en_US__4W_ad__repair4_JM_V1

If this step fails, issue the following commands and press Enter after each:

    a.  'DEL *.log'

    b.  'DEL *.chk'

    and proceed to Step 6.

6. From the Command prompt type 'ESENTUTL /p C:\Winnt\NTDS\ntds.dit /!10240 /8 /o' and press Enter to perform a 'hard' recovery
    of the AD Database.

SLN289101_en_US__5W_ad__repair5_JM_V1

Warning: Upon successful completion, ESENTUTL /p returns the database to the state of its last committed transaction. Recent changes may be lost; for this reason a full System State restore from daily backup is the best-practice method of recovering an AD server.

7. From the Command prompt type 'ESENTUTL /g C:\Winnt\NTDS\ntds.dit /!10240 /8 /o' and press Enter to ensure database consistency.

SLN289101_en_US__6W_ad__repair6_JM_V1

8. Return to the NTDSUTIL prompt (see Step 3) and type 'sem dat ana' (truncated from 'Semantic Database Analysis') and press Enter.
From the semantic checker: prompt type 'go' and press Enter.

SLN289101_en_US__7W_ad__repair7_JM_V1

If a problem is detected, type 'go fix' and press Enter.

9. Restart the server in Normal Mode upon completion of all steps.

In this article, we will see how to remove a domain controller in an Active Directory environment.

The deletion is done in two steps:

  • Demote the domain controller: remove the controller configuration.
  • Delete roles.

Before downgrading the server, ensure that the server does not have an FSMO role and always have at least 2 active Active Directory controllers.

If you want to destroy the Active Directory domain, disregard the above recommendations.

Demote the domain controller

1. On the Server Manager, click Manage 1 and then Delete Roles and Features 2 .

Server Manager

2. When launching the wizard, click the Next 1 button.

Wizard

3. Select server 1 and click Next 2 .

Select server

4. Uncheck the AD DS Service 1 box.

Uncheck AD DS

5. Click Remove 1 Features.

Remove MMC

6. An error message is displayed informing us that you must first demote the controller, click on “Downgrade the domain controller” to launch the new wizard.

Launch the wizard to demote the server

7. The wizard to demote the controller is displayed, depending on the environment in which we find different options are displayed. Click Next 1 .

It is possible to force the removal of the domain controller, this option will ignore the alerts and it will be necessary to manually delete any traces of the controller in the Active Directory.

Before 2012, when launching the dcpromo tool to remove a controller, you could check a box to indicate that the current controller was the last one that was destroying the domain. With this wizard, this box is displayed when the tool detects that the controller is actually the last one.

8. Check the Delete box 1 and click Next 2 .

Confirm delete

9. Enter the password for the local Administrator account 1 and click Next 2 .

Password

10. Validate the actions to be done then click on .

Demote

11. Wait during the demotion of the controller, when the operation is complete the server will be restarted automatically.

12. Connect to the server, this is no longer a domain controller, a notification on the server manager appears to promote the server because the AD DS service role is installed.

Server manager

13. On one of the still service controllers using the Active Directory Users and Computers console, verify that the computer object has been moved to the OU Computers.

OU computers

Now that the server is downgraded, we will see how to uninstall the roles.

Uninstall AD DS Roles

1. Restart the uninstall wizard in Server Roles 1 uncheck the AD DS 2 and DNS Server 3 roles and click Next 4 .

Uncheck DNS and AD DS

2. If necessary uninstall features, click Next 1 .

3. Confirm the deletion of roles by clicking Delete 1 .

Confirm

4. Wait while uninstalling …

wait

5. When the uninstall is complete, exit the wizard by clicking Close 1 and restart the server.

uninstall completed

The domain controller features are removed, by experience the last step is rarely performed, once the server is downgraded, the virtual machine is removed and the computer object is removed from the Active Directory.

None of the errors I found are similar to the one you have which was triggered when you tried to create a new folder. Some of the users triggered the error “0x8000ffff” when they are in the Windows Store probably trying to install an application on their computer.

In your case, since the error was triggered when you are creating a new folder, check the drive where you are creating that folder. If you are trying to create that new folder on an external drive like a USB flash drive or an external hard drive, make sure the drive is connected properly to your computer.

If you are creating the new folder on a USB flash drive, try transferring the flash drive to another USB port and try again. If you are creating that folder on an external hard drive, make sure the USB cable is connected properly to your external hard drive and to the USB port. Try transferring the USB cable to another USB port and try creating a new folder again.

If this doesn’t work, try scanning your computer with your antivirus. You may also use Sophos Virus Removal Tool to scan your computer for any possible virus infection. You don’t need to uninstall your antivirus to use the tool. It works alongside any antivirus program you may have. Just install the tool, wait until its virus definitions get updated, and scan your computer.

If a virus is found at the end of the scan, remove it and repeat the scan until it no longer detects a virus.

Followed to my previous post on ADDS installation on Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 4, I’ll be discussing on how to uninstall ADDS on this post. Ideally uninstalling the ADDS role means that you’re demoting your domain controller to be a normal server, an active directory error 0x8000ffff. Now, let’s take a look on the steps involved in demoting a domain controller.

  1. Open server manager and click on the “Manage” button and choose “Remove Roles and Features “as shown in the image below.

1.PNG

2. On the next screen, an active directory error 0x8000ffff, click “Next “.

2.PNG

3. On select the destination server pane, select the server from which you want to remove the ADDS role as shown in the image below.

3.PNG

4. Choose the server and click next, in this scenario I have only one server in the server pool and this is the one that’s running the ADDS role. Click next and it will list you the list of roles.

5.PNG

5. Choose “Active Directory Domain Services “role as shown above an active directory error 0x8000ffff click next. This will give you a window asking you to remove the dependent features for ADDS. Please go ahead and click on “Remove features “as shown in the image below.

6.PNG

6. You will get a window as shown below. Please go ahead and click on “Demote this domain controller “

7.PNG

7. This will take you to a screen as shown below, please go ahead and click on next. You need to choose the appropriate option.

8.PNG

8. I’m choosing the first option which says, an active directory error 0x8000ffff the removal of this domain controller “and then click on next.

9.PNG

9. On the next screen please validate all the roles running on the domain controller and click on the checkbox which says, “Proceed with removal “and click next.

10.PNG

11.PNG

10. The next screen will be prompting for a new password .Please go ahead and specify the new password and click next.

Note: This password will be different from the normal domain administrator password.

12.PNG

11. The next screen will ask you to review the changes made and once you’re done validating it please go ahead and click on the “demote” button to demote this server as shown in the image below.

Note: Clicking on the view script button will generate the script that ran on the background when this activity was performed .You can use this script for future purpose also if you want to perform a ADDS uninstallation on any other domain controller .

13.PNG

14.PNG

12. Finally once this is done your server will be restarted and then you will notice that this server is no longer a domain controller. You can confirm this on the logon screen itself where you would just see the logon username and not the domain name prefixed to it. In my case below I’m logging in as the administrator and you won’t see the domain name prefixed before.

15.PNG

13. Before uninstalling the ADDS role, this is how the logon screen looked. Check the logon screen below. You can see my domain name “VIGNESH” prefixed before the logon name.

Update Windows Fehler diesen Servicing September Stack nicht installiert KB44571440x8000FFFFKB4457128 System Microsoft Version

Hi there, I'm stuck on this one.

Long story short I've promoted rights and have two new running and active DCs on my network now. I want to decom the AD portion of the old DC, to utilize other features pre-existing on that server.

Following all the steps I could find on removal, everything goes smoothly, including demoting the DC via the GUI uninstallation process (which it was then removed from the domain completely). However, when I get to the point when I actually remove the role via the GUI uninstallation process, everything goes smoothly until one of the last steps while it's uninstalling, stops abruptly and throws error  0x8000ffff.

I've removed metadata and the DC from sites and services and users and computers, and I've uninstalled AD LDS and DNS prior to trying to finish this.

I've restarted multiple times, resynced the active DCs, connected to the domain again, an active directory error 0x8000ffff, tried running Powershell but I'm still new to that world.

This other post is basically what I'm encountering, but it seems the resolution was to manually remove the role, which I've tried, but I'm not entirely sure what he meant by "manually"

Any thoughts?

  • Doesn't dcpromo remove AD services as part of the process? Once that completes there shouldn't be anything else to do. You have a member server that is not a DC and you can re-purpose or decommission as you see fit.  Others please correct me if I am wrong.

If you're talking about the first part of the uninstallation, Windows update error code 646 noticed in this video he had to do it twice, which seems to be the same process over here.

Thanks Adrian, I did mention that in my OP. I guess all I'm able to get from that is wipe the old DC clean and re-install the OS without DC privileges? The issue with that, is that the old DC is actually running several other production critical programs, and it could be hours of work to perform such a procedure, an active directory error 0x8000ffff, if everything goes well.

If it's the only way, then so be it. However, if this is actually easily removed, then it would save a heckuva headache.

Thats of the many reasons why we do not use DCs for other purposes.

Sometimes you need to choose.app or Domain.if you choose both, then have them on different servers.I am so sorry.but thats the harsh fact.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll tell the last 5 MSP techs that. I'm the lucky one that got hired to fix everything.
