Hi all, I am trying to connect through my dial up connection. I am directly connecting the phone line with my laptop. I am getting Error 676. I get ERROR 676 when I dial up from my laptop to a MTNL Line. Whie at the same time my friend gets connected without facing the problem. The settings are. Error 676: The phone line is busy. My ISP says this is an settings issue with the notebook. Appreciate, if you can guide me in getting this.

Common Dial-Up Errors

When receiving dialup error messages it is more important to look at the error number rather than worded error messages such as "remote computer did not respond". This is a perfect example. The remote computer is the computer you are trying to connect to. Should you not hear the dial tone (fax like sound) and you receive this message you have been given false information from your computer. Some worded error messages are genuine like "invalid username and password" bearing this in mind will help you solve your problem.

Error 600 - 649:
If you encounter this error the problem will be related to your computer/modem. Turn the computer off for 5 minutes and try again. If the same error occurs you may need to consult your computer manufacturer or local tech support for diagnostics/repair.

Error 650:
You will need to examine the configuration of your Windows application called Dial-UP Networking. In most cases re-installing this application will fix the problem.

Error 676 - 678:
Communication between the modem device and the computer itself are not working together. Uninstall the modem software/drivers, restart your computer, and reinstall it again.

Error 680:
The most common error message, no dial tone indicates the modem can not pick up a dial tone. It is the same if you pick up your hand phone and hear no dial tone the first thing you would do is to check all cables are plugged in correctly or not damaged.  If the cables or a landline phone work, the modem is most likely dead.

Error 691:
Authentication problem, check that your username and password are correct. Your username and password will be case sensitive. If you are unsure of your username and password it is best to consult our technical support team for a resolution. Should your details be correct, your computer may be storing incorrect details in cache (stored files). Internet options and deleting cached passwords should resolve the problem.

Error 709:
You have not got your dial up connection set up correctly, it's best to delete the connection and create a new one. Should the problem persist, seek further assistance.

Error 718:
The connection is timing out.  In most cases this is because the physical line (wiring) has degraded and is causing signal deterioration.

Error 720 - 731:
This is a bit of a buggy error, in most cases recreating your dialup account will fix this problem.

Error 745:
This is one of the most serious errors, should you encounter this error it is informing you a required system file is missing. This can be due to virus removal or system configuration files being damaged or corrupt.  You will most likely need to reinstall your computer's operating system (OS) or have it repaired professionally.

The most common cause for this is that at least one Internet device (for example, a firewall or a router) between your computer and the VPN server is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) protocol packets. If the problem persists, contact your network administrator or Internet service provider.

807 - The network connection between your computer and the VPN server was interrupted. This can be caused by a problem in the VPN transmission and is commonly the result of internet latency or simply that your VPN server has reached capacity. Please try to reconnect to the VPN server. If this problem persists, contact the VPN administrator and analyze quality of network connectivity.

808 - The network connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be established because the remote server refused the connection. This is typically caused by a mismatch between the server's configuration and your connection settings. 809 - The network connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be established because the remote server is not responding. This could be because one of the network devices (e.g., firewalls, NAT, routers, etc.) between your computer and the remote server is not configured to allow VPN connections. Please contact your Administrator or your service provider to determine which device may be causing the problem.

810 - A network connection between your computer and the VPN server was started, but the VPN connection was not completed. This is typically caused by the use of an incorrect or expired certificate for authentication between the client and the server. Please contact your Administrator to ensure that the certificate being used for authentication is valid.

811 - The network connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be established because the remote server is not responding. This is typically caused by a pre-shared key problem between the client and server. A pre-shared key is used to guarantee you are who you say you are in an IP Security (IPSec) communication cycle.     Getting Error 676, Dial up Connection

    Hi all,

    I am trying to connect through my dial up connection.
    I am directly connecting the phone line with my laptop.

    I have checked everything mentioned above. Everything is fine except what front2back has suggested. Can anyone plz tell me how to test whether modem is fine or not?

    I tried to Query Modem, it results in success.

Error 676 - The Line is Busy




This error usually means that the modem received a busy signal from the other end.

Most Common Causes are:

  • - The modem you are dialing is busy.. Hang up and try again, or grab a coffee and try later. Some ISP's have times of the evening (8pm on monday nights) where they can be at capacity and have no free modems to answer your incoming modem.
  • - If you hear a busy signal that is quicker then normal, that's referred to as a 'ast busy' and signifies a problem with the telephone company.
  • - If you never receive busy signals from your provide, doublecheck the phone number you entered to ensure it is correct, typos do happen and you could accidentally be calling a wrong number.

    In Most cases, it's a capacity issue with your ISP and either they are short of modem lines, or have equipment down, and can answer less than the normal capacity of calls.

      I am using Lucent modem for my dial up connection and dialing two number one is my company’s VPN number and another is normal MTNL dial up connection number. it is connecting with the VPN number but when i am dialing the MTNL number on the same line after disconnecting it is giving error 676 (that phone line is busy). and on the different machine it is connecting at the same time. Could you help me out from this?

        I’m assuming your using a microsoft product..I know that there is an m.s. knowlage base on it for win98 so it probably is a carry thru basicly it is not clearing out the at register in the modem to let it know that call 1 is done and to let the dialer go to call 2 as a suggestion you might want to try to go to a terminal program in between calls and type the following “+++ at

    I did everythig that I could but to my dismay, no luck.

    Seems that some handshake issues could be there between the modem & ISP.

    I did following -

    1. Rechecked & disabled Call Waiting on my telephone line

    2. Tried with both Tone & Pulse methods.

    3. Also added ATS50.4=0S51=31 in [Extra initialization commands] field & checked. (This I searched for BCM Modem from their site.) 

    4. Tried with HyperTerm -While I got all the expected commands, the final command was BUSY.

    5. Disabled the "Use Dialing Rules" checkbox in my dialup connection properties.

    6. Finally, I tried reinstalling Modem driver but no lock with any of the above methods.

    I think, I have tried with most options. Seems to me that the modem is trying to connect. I can listen to the dialing tones before getting the error. May be that it's not able to open any specific COM port. As the heading above the Error says - "Opening Port..." Any settings need to be changed for COM ports pls ?
