Seagate Barracuda 2 TB - RAW partition doesn't want to format [solved]
Hi guys,

I bought a new LG 27EA63 screen because my Samsung P2370 stopped working. Because my pc is quite full I also ordered a Seagate ST2000DM001 Barracuda 2TB hdd. When I installed the Seagate with a 6 GB/s Sata cable and the power plug I looked in disk management and saw the hdd there. Then I progressed though the installation of the partition and selected NTFS to be the file system.

After the installation the partition was not NTFS but RAW? I searched for information and found that RAW is a unusable file system wich means that Windows can't read the hdd or there might be something broken. I tried other ways (format etc.) to get the RAW to NTFS but they alle didn't work.

Do you guys know what I have to do?
I hope we can fix this problem because it might not even be that big.

So, with no further insight, I did what my intuition told me : I attempted to overwrite just the tiny unreadable area with this ddrescuecommand (could be done with the more basic ddcommand but I'm less familiar with it) :

And it worked : to verify I re-imaged the first GB and this time there was no error (I had tried this partial imaging before running the above command and the error area was still there then, with the exact same location and size, I also noticed that it was skipped right away, with no slowdown, contrary to what usually happens when there's an actual “physical” bad sector and it slows down or hangs for a few seconds before skipping) ; the “short self-test” now completes with no error as well.

Before that I tried some Windows tools : a read scan with Hard Disk Sentinel made it freeze indefinitely, I had to shut down the drive ; likewise, trying to access the problematic area with WinHex made it freeze until the drive was shut down.
So, am I correct that this was a case of “logical” bad sectors, and that the drive is physically fine, and safe to use again ? What is the likely cause of this, perhaps a write operation interrupted by an improper shutdown ? Is this a common issue, and does it commonly render the drive inoperant, when it affects a system file ?

Regarding ddr_utilities, I tried again after starting fresh from the same live USB drive (actually a SD card connected through a USB reader) and it worked. Previously, I had downloaded ddrutilities-2.8.tar.gz, extracted it and installed it following the included manual, not knowing that it was pre-installed on this ISO, maybe there was a version conflict or something. And according to the analysis from ddru_findbad all the formerly unreadable sectors belonged to the same “/.journal” file :

I guess that this is roughly equivalent to the $LogFile and $UsnJrnl files in NTFS. Could someone please elaborate ? Does the owner have to run some integrity check procedure to use the drive safely, and how is it called in MacOS ? (Again, I have very little experience with anything from Apple computers.)

No, I imaged the drive right away, didn't write anything on it, and at no point there was anything but “0” in the “Pending Sector Count” field.
From what I understand, a reallocation event is just that, as the name implies, when a sector gets actually reallocated, i.e. moved to G-list, not when it's counted as “pending” then cleared again – right ?
What exactly is “Write Head”, and how come the same SMART attribute code can refer to two distinct notions ? As “maximus” said, these values are vendor specific, so does anyone have a specific experience with that model or that range of models, and a definite knowledge of what those values mean here ? Again, can I confidently tell the owner that the drive is safe to use ? (Well, except for the fact that it's a Seagate, alright...)

SSD turned to RAW suddenly - Reliable?

My laptop with Windows 10 fall creators update (installed one week ago) is running on a laptop with the main disk SSD OCZ Vertex 128GB + a secondary internal disk Samsung SSD 512GB, the latter as a replacement for the DVD drive ,using a suitable caddy (DELL Latitude E6520).

Today, all of a sudden after a reboot, the secondary disk wasn't accessible, while the unit was visible in Windows Explorer showing the correct amount of used data and free space, however attempting to accessing the unit would throw an error "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"; attempting to CHKDSK would state that the filesystem is RAW.

I have run SMART test getting the following attached results. Then I have run Easus recovery tools, that found a lot of files but not all. Quite worried I have accessed the disk that in the meanwhile recovered. Back to NTFS, fully accessible no errors given by CHKDSK.

I wonder why all this happened, and if the unit is reliable or not.

Found many articles such as this one stating that this sudden change may occur for bad connections or power outage. I wonder if I can rely on this disk and the computer itself

EDIT 2:

The problem occurred again. Downloaded Samsung Magician, no errors detected on the unit, I suspect the problem lies in the controller or the operating system. I have unplugged the caddy & removed the hard disk, connecting it to an external USB cable. Currently testing. I wonder if it may happen that the internal controller gets defective?

EDIT 3:

Now on day 2 with the disk connected externally through USB cable. No glitches and one other important aspect: the laptop keyboard was stopping working in the last months and had to power off and on the computer to set it back to work. Since I have removed the disk from the caddy, this is not happening anymore. Could the caddy be defective? Or the controller? Or maybe the internal disk was draining too much energy from the controller?

Problem Observation:

After this initial problem observation here are some extra steps to make further observations:

Step #1 of 3:
Using the QNAP Diagnostic Tool --> Kernel Log Analyzer, the following is observed:

    ata1: hard resetting link --Count:N (Where N is the # of errors that have occurred thus far).

Step #2 of 3:
Using Storage Manager --> Disks/VJBOD --> SMART Information --> SATA_R-Error_Count, the following is observed:

    SATA_R-Error_Count: >= 1

Step #3 of 3:
Inspect the Kernel Logs using a Kernel Log Dump (QNAP Diagnostic Tool --> Dump Log) or using SSH and the 'dmesg' command.

Specific errors observed in the Kernel Logs vary slightly, but some typical observations would be as follows:

In the kernal logs, it has been repeatedly observed, that this problem is occurring for both NCQ Commands and Non-NCQ Commands. When 'UnrecovData Handshk' errors occur for both NCQ Commands and Non-NCQ Commands, this strongly indicates a physical connection problem, likely a backplane problem. [1][2].

From an expert:

This is transmission error. Most common causes are power related or
unreliable connection especially if backplanes are involved. Is the
problem still reproducible? If so, can you please try to move it to
different power connector and SATA port and see what changes?



Initial Problem Analysis:

This problem seems to involve a hardware error and a renegotiation of SATA link speed to a lower speed (from SATA III (6.0 Gbps) down to SATA II (3.0 Gbps)), so that data can be more reliably transferred across the physical SATA link.

I am aware that it has been stated that using a mechanical HDD with a link speed renegotiated down to SATA II (3.0 Gbps) from SATA III (6.0 Gbps) is acceptable, because current mechanical (non-SSD) based HDD (in 2017) cannot even come close to achieving SATA II (3.0 Gbps) speeds. While technically true, I do not find this to be an acceptable reason for ignoring what is potentially a hardware signaling problem, which MAY lead to a more serious problem later on. Simply put, this observed behavior is incorrect and simply ignoring it based on the current technical limitations of mechanical HDD, will not aid in finding a serious solution to this problem.

Observed Problem Frequency:

It has been observed that this problem happens nearly every time the device is powered on or rebooted. From my observations, it would be exceptional to get a clean startup with the correct link speed negotiated and maintained throughout the entire boot process. However, I have actually observed a clean start up with the correct link speed negotiated, but this rarely occurs.

Troubleshooting Background:

Initially my configuration started as a RAID 10 when I noticed these errors. Later, I reinitialized the NAS with out using a RAID, instead using separate individual Volumes for each physical HDD. In either configuration, the ATA Hard Resetting Link error occurred with the same frequency.

Original HDD Configuration:

*All HDD have been scanned (without errors reported) and no S.M.A.R.T. errors (other than those stated below) are occurring. All HDD are brand new, and have been in use for less than 30 days.

  • SATA Port 1 - [HDD A1]: WDC WD80EFZX-68UW8N0 83.H0A83 8TB (Firmware: 83.H0A83)
  • SATA Port 2 - [HDD B2]: WDC WD80EFZX-68UW8N0 83.H0A83 8TB (Firmware: 83.H0A83)
  • SATA Port 3 - [HDD C3]: WDC WD80EFZX-68UW8N0 83.H0A83 8TB (Firmware: 83.H0A83)
  • SATA Port 4 - [HDD D4]: WDC WD80EFZX-68UW8N0 83.H0A83 8TB (Firmware: 83.H0A83)

Troubleshooting:

I have tried swapping in one of the other available drives [HDD D4] into SATA Port 1 (with the SATA Ports 2-4 populated with all other drives each time). The ATA "hard resetting link" error occurs on SATA Port 1 with the other [HDD D4] connected to it. Short of plugging in every HDD that I have into SATA Port 1 and then testing them individually, I think it safe to say that the cause of this problem is not a particular HDD. I describe my troubleshooting methodology in detail below:

Methodology:

    [Rearrange Drives - #1 of 3]

    Originally [HDD A1] was plugged into SATA Port 1, when I first noticed this error. It managed to accumulate the following errors while plugged into SATA Port 1:

    [HDD A1]:
      - ID: 199
      - SATA_R-Error_Count (UltraDMA CRC Error Count): 32

    Afterwards, I swapped [HDD D4] into SATA Port 1, and put [HDD A1] into SATA Port 4. [HDD D4] managed to accumulate the following errors while plugged into SATA Port 1:

    [HDD D4]:
      - ID: 199
      - SATA_R-Error_Count (UltraDMA CRC Error Count): 10

    Also, while [HDD A1] was plugged into SATA Port 4, no more additional errors occurred on [HDD A1].

    Afterwards, I swapped [HDD A1] back into SATA Port 1, and put [HDD D4] back into SATA Port 4. Once this original/starting configuration was restored, errors began to once again accumulate on [HDD A1] plugged into SATA Port 1.

    [Hot Swap Drive - #2 of 3]

    I also tried physically Hot Swapping the Drive (plugging/unplugging) while the NAS is running and it did renegotiate the correct link speed. This can be observed in the Storage Manager as follows:

      Current Speed: 6 Gbps
      Maximum Speed: 6 Gbps

    However, this is only a temporary solution while the NAS is running, upon NAS shutdown/reboot the 'hard resetting link' error occurs again and the link speed is once again reduced. Afterward, this can be observed in the Storage Manager as follows:

      Current Speed: 3 Gbps
      Maximum Speed: 6 Gbps

    [Single HDD Install - #3 of 3]

    Reinitialized the NAS using only a single HDD plugged into SATA Port 1. SATA Port 2-4 did not have any HDD plugged into them. I still got a link speed error on SATA Port 1. This can be observed in the Storage Manager as follows:

      Current Speed: 3 Gbps
      Maximum Speed: 6 Gbps

Troubleshooting 'Conclusion:

- Following these results, one could conclude that the problem is not the HDD, but the SATA Port 1 on the backplane or the SATA Controller is the source of the problem.

Storage Manager Link Speed Display (Bug):

NOTE:Also, the display in Storage Manager is sometimes inaccurate (bug?), in that it will display (Current Speed: 6Gbps / Maximum Speed: 6Gbps). But, using SSH with the following command displays the actual current link speed:

    [~] # cat /sys/class/ata_link/link1/sata_spd
    3.0 Gbps
So, be careful about exclusively trusting the Storage Manager for the accurate display of the current link speed. Even though it appears that the correct link speed is reported in the Storage Manager, often another link speed error has occurred in the Kernel Log and in the S.M.A.R.T. data on the HDD.

Alternatively, after each reboot, using SSH, try using a combination of commands like these to determine if a link speed error occurred and the current link speed:

    - Get the current SATA Link Speed(s):

      [~] # cat /sys/class/ata_link/link1/sata_spd
      3.0 Gbps

      [~] # cat /sys/class/ata_link/link2/sata_spd
      6.0 Gbps

      [~] # cat /sys/class/ata_link/link3/sata_spd

    - Check kernel logs for ATA errors, etc.

      I ordered this drive a couple of weeks ago. Windows (64-bit) was able to partition and format the drive. So far, so good. But after copying a large amount of data to the drive (it is a 4TB drive, after all), it mysteriously wiped out its own master file table -- destroying all of the data on the drive in the process. So I figured my system may have glitched out for some reason, and tried it again. Same scenario: the drive was able to be partitioned and formatted, but once I restored the lost data to the drive, it once again "committed suicide" all by itself and lost all of its data. I also noticed that when idling (not being written to or read from), it made a "click-clack" noise over and over again, as if it had bricked up.

      Obviously, I received a drive that is defective and I am currently trying to return it for a replacement. I am just posting this as a heads-up to anyone else looking to purchase this drive: test it thoroughly upon receipt, because I found out that I am not the only person who has experienced this sort of problem with the WD4000FYYZ model.

      If the drive is replaced promptly and without any further hassles, then I'll be more than happy to edit my review and bump it up a couple of stars. But for now, I am very disappointed, as this is supposedly an enterprise class drive... with a high price tag to match. So let's hope that this situation is resolved in a relatively painless manner.

      EDIT to add: I am happy to report that the seller replaced the defective unit with a brand new unit in OEM packaging. The replacement drive is working perfectly, therefore I have bumped up my rating accordingly. It is unfortunate that I initially received a defective unit... but all's well that ends well. I'm still cautioning others to beware of defective units, because if it happened to me and others, then it can happen to you, too. But after everything was straightened out, it's a great hard drive and well worth its cost. It's fast, it's dead quiet and it has an obscene amount of storage space.
